Book excerpt: The compressible axisymmetric laminar boundary layer is considered for very large values of the transverse curvature parameter (roughly proportional to the ratio of the Mangler value of the boundary layer displacement thickness to the local cross-sectional radius of the body). Asymptotic expansions are constructed using the method of inner-outer expansions and verified by comparison with exact numerical similarity solutions. Both finite and hypersonic Mach number inviscid flow conditions are considered. The principal results are asymptotic formulas for skin friction, heat transfer, and boundary layer displacement thickness. Existing expansions, obtained by Wei, are found to be incorrect. The viscous pressure interaction near the vertex of a pointed axisymmetric body is treated within the framework of boundary layer theory and a tangent-cone approximation. (Author).

Book excerpt: An approximate momentum integral solution for the compressible axisymmetrix laminar boundary layer when transverse curvature effects are important is presented. Both finite and infinite inviscid Mach numbers are considered. Detailed comparisons with exact asymptotic solutions are given. The method is found, in many instances, to agree to leading order with the exact solutions as the transverse curvature becomes very large--a property that none of the existing approximate solutions for compressible flow possess. Some example calculations for a cone in supersonic and hypersonic flow are presented. Also, the method is applied to the hypersonic self-induced pressure problem for a cone. (Author).

Book excerpt: Use is made of self similarity approach and integral momentum technique to obtain solutions of Van Dyke's second-order boundary-layer equations for laminar incompressible flow. Accurate numerical solutions of the most general self similar equations are tabulated for the four second-order contributions due to vorticity interaction, displacement speed, longitudinal curvature, and transverse curvature. A limited number of closed form solutions are obtained which appear to have special significance at the point of first-order boundary-layer separation. In particular it is found that the displacement speed problem can proceed up to separation for only two values of the second-order pressure gradient. All other cases display an infinite discontinuity at this point. Numerical solutions of a large number of cases for the longitudinal and transverse curvature effects well support an identical conclusion. The integral momentum technique applied (a straight forward extension of the Karmen-Pohlhausen solutions) is found to be oversensitive to approximations and in the final analysis is rejected in favor of locally similar solutions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis is presented which predicts the properties of an arbitrarily thick turbulent boundary layer in axial flow past a long cylinder. The study makes use of a modified form of the turbulent law-of-the-wall, which properly accounts for transverse curvature effects. Using this law, the theory which follows is then an exact solution to the axisymmetric equations of continuity and momentum in incompressible flow. Numerical results are given to show the effect of curvature on the various boundary layer characteristics. Skin friction and drag coefficients can be increased greatly with increasing curvature while boundary layer thickness is decreased. When defined in their axisymmetric form, the displacement and momentum thickness are both decreased by curvature. The velocity profile is flattened greatly and the shape factor approaches unity at large curvature. The failure of earlier power-law theories to make accurate predictions is shown to be due to their inadequate handling of the strong profile shape changes. (Author).

Book excerpt: Propulsion Re-Entry Physics deals with the physics of propulsion re-entry and covers topics ranging from inductive magnetoplasmadynamic (MPD) propulsion systems to launch systems and orbiting maneuvering systems. Problems of re-entry aerodynamics are considered, along with interaction problems in hypersonic fluid dynamics. Comprised of 31 chapters, this volume begins with a detailed account of the quasi-steady adiabatic vaporization and subsequent exothermic decomposition of a pure monopropellant spherical droplet in the absence of free and forced convection. The discussion then turns to results of calculations on MPD machines working in the intermittent and in the continuous mode; inductive plasma accelerators with electromagnetic standing waves; and spherical rocket motors for space and upper stage propulsion. Subsequent chapters focus on pulsed plasma satellite control systems; drag and stability of various Mars entry configurations; hypersonic laminar boundary layers around slender bodies; and effects of an entry probe gas envelope on experiments concerning planetary atmospheres. This book will appeal to students, practitioners, and research workers interested in propulsion re-entry and the accompanying physics.

Book excerpt: The axisymmetric nonsimilar compressible laminar boundary-layer equations including approximate transverse curvature terms were modified to treat inviscid external vorticity, slip and temperature jump as first-order quantities, and this is referred to as the first-order treatment. The effects of boundary-layer displacement were also treated. Primary interest was in predicting experimentally measurable quantities over the entire body length of nonanalytic shapes, and the analysis was not confined to the nose or stagnation region. A review is included of second-order boundary-layer theory and of recent developments in the numerical solution of second-order boundary-layer effects. Comparisons of predicted displacement-induced pressure distributions, heat-transfer distributions and zero-lift drag were made with results from second-order boundary-layer theory and experimental data for a spherically blunted 9-deg half-angle cone at free-stream Mach numbers of 9 and 18. At moderate to high Reynolds numbers, the comparisons showed good agreement between first- and second-order predictions and experimental results for drag and heat-transfer distributions; however, poor agreement was found between predicted and experimental displacement-induced pressure distributions. At low Reynolds numbers, both first- and second-order treatments substantially overpredicted the zero-lift drag. The range of applicability of the theories was established for the conditions treated by inspection of the numerical results and by comparison of the numerical results with experimental zero-lift drag data. Book excerpt: The stability of a high speed, axisymmetric boundary layer is investigated using secondary instability theory and direct numerical simulation. Parametric studies based on temporal secondary instability theory identify subharmonic secondary instability as a likely path to transition on a cylinder at Mach 4.5. The theoretical predictions are validated by direct numerical simulation of temporally-evolving primary and secondary disturbances in an axisymmetric boundary-layer flow. At small amplitudes of the secondary disturbance, predicted growth rates agree to several significant digits with values obtained from the spectrally-accurate solution of the compressible Navier Stokes equations. Qualitative agreement persists to large amplitudes of secondary disturbance. Moderate transverse curvature is shown to significantly affect the growth rate of axisymmetric second mode disturbances, the likely candidates of primary instability. The influence of curvature on secondary instability is largely indirect but most probably significant, through modulation of the primary disturbance amplitude. Subharmonic secondary instability is shown to be predominantly inviscid in nature, and to account for spikes in the Reynolds stress components at or near the critical layer.
