This paper examines the engineering design implications regarding these axial stresses resulting from three recent studies. First, the cyclic axial response of the leading end of a HDPE pipe is measured for the cyclic pulling force history experienced as it is pulled into place. Pulling force history measured in the field is approximated and used to measure the response of pipe samples. The study includes evaluation of simple creep modeling to estimate the axial strains, demonstrating that these provide useful, conservative estimates of maximum axial strain. Second, the development of axial tension in the leading section of the HDPE pipe after connection to appurtenances is modeled in the laboratory. It is demonstrated that the conventional 24 h time period over which the pipe is left to recover in length after installation ensures that the axial tensions that redevelop are at low levels. A calculation procedure is introduced to determine the axial force distribution along the pipe during installation and over its service life. Pulling force modeling similar to that outlined in ASTM 1962-05 is extended to consider the effects of pipe and soil deformations, so that cyclic response during installation and axial stress history after installation are determined. The study demonstrates that values of from one quarter to one third of the maximum pulling force can be used to estimate the long term axial stress in the pipe over a 50 year service life (for assessment of potential for slow crack growth). Strain measurements in the laboratory simulation of pipe installation and strain calculations for computed response over the service life of the pipe are found to be estimated effectively using time-dependent creep (secant) modulus for the HDPE.

Book excerpt: Horizontal directional drilling is increasingly used to install pipes without costs and disruptions associated with conventional 'cut and cover' installations. This technique, which was developed by industrial innovators, feature complex soil and pipe response which is not well understood. The success of this operation depends on knowledge of the pulling forces applied, level of ground disturbance, ground expansion or fracture from mud pressure, and the effect of the pulling operation on the pipes. Tensile stresses in the pipe vary with time during and after installation, and along the pipe. This applies especially to polymer pipes where the stresses during insertion and those over the service life of the pipe may influence its performance. The main objective of this study is to model the short term and long term response of pipes installed using horizontal directional drilling and to investigate the effect of the time dependent behaviour of polymer pipes, as well as other installation variables on the performance of the pipe during and after installation. The mechanical behaviour of high density polyethylene used to manufacture a significant portion of pipes installed using horizontal directional drilling is investigated and two sophisticated constitutive models are developed to simulate the time-dependent behaviour of high density polyethylene. The interaction between the pipe and the surrounding soil during horizontal directional drilling installations is also investigated and modelled. A FORTRAN algorithm is developed to calculate the short and long term response of elastic and polymeric pipes installed using horizontal directional drilling. The program uses the HDPE constitutive models as well as the pipe-soil interaction model developed in the study. After evaluation, the developed program is employed in a parametric study on the sensitivity of short term and long term pipe response to different parameters, including the effect of overstressing the pipe during installation. As Multiaxial modeling is necessary for accurate analysis of some applications including the swagelining method, a uniaxial constitutive model developed in the current study is generalized to a multi-axial model that can simulate the response to biaxial stress-strain fields. The multi-axial model is implemented in a finite element code and its performance in simulating multiaxial stress-strain fields is evaluated.

Book excerpt: Polymer pipes, typically high density polyethylene (HDPE), can be pulled-into-place, avoiding traditional cut-and-cover construction, using pipe bursting and horizontal directional drilling (HDD) pipe installation techniques. Of particular interest, are the ground displacements, induced by cavity expansion, associated with these techniques and the strains that develop in existing pipes in response to these displacements. Further, the axial stress-strain response of the new HDPE pipe during and after the cyclic pulling force history required to pull the pipe into place is of interest. Surface displacements and strains in an adjacent polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe induced by static pipe bursting were measured during the replacement of a new unreinforced concrete pipe. For the pipe bursting geometry tested, the maximum vertical surface displacement measured at the ground surface was 6 mm, while the distribution of vertical surface displacements extended no more than 2 m on either side of the centreline. The maximum longitudinal strain measured in the PVC pipe was less than 0.1% and its vertical diameter decreased by only 0.5%, suggesting that pipe bursting did not jeopardize the long-term performance of the water pipe tested. In addition, results from identical stress relaxation and creep tests performed on whole pipe samples and coupons trimmed from a pipe wall were compared, and these demonstrated that the coupons exhibited higher modulus than the pipe samples. Therefore, isolated pipe samples, as opposed to coupons, were tested to quantify the stress-strain response of HDPE pipe during the simulated installation, strain recovery, and axial restraint stages of HDD. Axial strains were found to progressively accumulate when an HDPE pipe sample was subjected to the cyclic stress history used to simulate an HDD installation. It was shown that existing linear and nonlinear viscoelastic models can serve as predictive design tools for estimating the cyclic strain history of HDPE pipe during installation. For the specific conditions examined, the tensile axial stresses redeveloped in the pipe samples, once restrained, were not large enough to lead to long-term stress conditions conducive to slow crack growth even when the short-term performance limits were exceeded by a factor of 1.5.

Book excerpt: The thesis examines how high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe installed by horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and traditional open trench (OT) construction techniques behave differently in saturated soil conditions typical of river crossings. Design fundamentals for depth of cover are analogous between HDD and OT; however, how the product pipe is situated in the soil medium is vastly different. This distinction in pipe bedding can produce significant differences in the post installation phase. The research was inspired by several incidents involving plastic pipe installed beneath rivers by HDD where the pipeline penetrated the overburden soil and floated to the surface after installation. It was hypothesized that pipes installed by HDD have a larger effective volume due to the presence of low permeability bentonite based drilling fluids in the annular space on completion of the installation. This increased effective volume of the pipe increases the buoyant force of the pipe compared to the same product diameter installed by OT methods, especially in situations where the pipe is installed below the ground water table. To simulate these conditions, a real-scale experiment was constructed to model the behavior of buried pipelines submerged in saturated silty soils. A full factorial design was developed to analyze scenarios with pipe diameters of 50, 75, and 100 mm installed at varying depths in a silty soil simulating an alluvial deposition. Contrary to the experimental hypothesis, pipes installed by OT required a greater depth of cover to prevent pipe floatation than similarly sized pipe installed by HDD. The results suggested that pipes installed by HDD are better suited to survive changing depths of cover. In addition, finite element method (FEM) modeling was conducted to understand soil stress patterns in the soil overburden post-installation. Maximum soil stresses occurring in the soil overburden between post-OT and HDD installation scenarios were compared to understand the pattern of total soil stress incurred by the two construction methods. The results of the analysis showed that OT installation methods triggered a greater total soil stress than HDD installation methods. The annular space in HDD resulted in less soil stress occurring in the soil overburden. Furthermore, the diameter of the HDD annular space influenced the soil stress that occurred in the soil overburden, while the density of drilling fluids did not vastly affect soil stress variations. Thus, the diameter of the annular space could impact soil stress patterns in HDD installations post-construction. With these findings engineers and designers may plan, design, and construct more efficient river-crossing projects.

During installation, the pipe is subject to a combination of loads and the long-term performance of a pipe installed by HDD is linked to the stresses that develop during installation. With increasing demand for steel pipeline installations using HDD, a more detailed investigation of the stress conditions that develop during installation is required to evaluate the reliability of current design guidelines. This dissertation aims to identify and address topics related to the analysis of the loads imposed on steel pipes during HDD installation. In North America, the load calculations recommended by the Pipeline Research Council International, PRCI (2015) are widely used for steel pipeline installation by HDD. Therefore, more attention is given to investigating the stress analysis method suggested in this widely accepted guideline. Pull force estimation in HDD is essential during the planning phase. As part of current design practice, simplifications and assumptions need to be made to approximate the pull forces expected during HDD pullback. However, to date, a comprehensive assessment of the accuracy of pull force predictions has not been completed. A review of current design practice based on PRCI and industry accepted engineering assumptions for pull force calculations is presented in this work. Data from two hundred recent commercial HDD projects were collected and studied to compare actual and predicted pull forces in chapter three of this thesis. The accuracy of the pull force prediction for these crossings was investigated based on different project characteristics such as pipe size, crossing length, geotechnical conditions, and equipment size. This study indicates that the underlying assumptions for pull force estimations need to be selected based on project-specific characteristics to increase the accuracy of pull force predictions. In some HDD applications, multiple product pipes can be bundled together and installed inside a single hole. In the absence of detailed analytical solutions for bundled pipe projects, a simple approach can be used based on current calculation methods, which involves approximating the bundled pipes by using a single equivalent pipe to calculate the required pull force. Chapter four of this thesis reviews the concept of using a single equivalent pipe and applies it to the pull force calculation method recommended by PRCI. Five HDD case studies-including installations of bundles comprising two to six steel pipes of different sizes-were investigated to determine the accuracy of the proposed pull force estimation method. The simple method proposed in this work was found to result in pull force predictions that were close to actual loads measured during installation. Chapters five and six of this thesis describe a strain monitoring program which was utilized for two major HDD installations over a kilometer long to analyze the axial and circumferential stresses and strains imposed on the product pipe during HDD installations. Strain measurements were presented in the form of pipe strains along the drill path during the time of the installation. The stress-strain relationships were developed for the pipe installation and installation stresses were calculated using the strain measurements. Then, the stresses calculated from the strain data were compared with the expected theoretical values determined based on current design practice. The strain monitoring and stress calculation discussed in this thesis provides some details on the expected behavior of steel pipes during HDD installations. Finally, this thesis presents a new method to model the geometric path of the pipe inside the borehole based on Bézier curves, using drilling survey data collected while drilling the pilot hole. A large-diameter HDD project in dense soil where the actual geometry of the installed pipe was determined using an in-line inspection tool is presented as a case study. The analysis of bend radii indicates that for most locations along the bore path, the installed pipeline had a larger bend radius than the as-drilled hole. The application of the proposed geometric modeling is tested in the case study project. The smallest bending radii determined by the proposed geometric modeling method using Bézier curves was found to be closer to the actual pipe curvature as opposed to simply using the geometry of the pilot hole to determine the pipe bend radii.
