Book Synopsis The Life and Music of Gérard Grisey by : Jeffrey Arlo Brown
Download or read book The Life and Music of Gérard Grisey written by Jeffrey Arlo Brown and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first biography of the composer Gérard Grisey shows how the artist's sensuality and rigor came together to form the musical genre known as spectralism. The French composer Gérard Grisey (1946-98) changed the course of music history with his small but potent output. Labeled "spectral" music, his compositions looked to the physics of sound and the capacities of human perception for material and inspiration. Born in Belfort, Grisey was the son of a French Resistance veteran turned car mechanic and a homemaker. His first instrument was as humble as his background: the accordion. But Grisey rose from his provincial background to the heights of his profession. This first biography of Grisey traces his journey from rigid Catholicism to broader mysticism; his studies in Olivier Messiaen's legendary composition class; the development of the first "spectral" works in the 1970s; Grisey's stint teaching at the University of California at Berkeley, during which he suffered severe depression; the development of his late, post-spectral style; and his untimely death at the age of 52, shortly after completing his masterpiece on death, the Four Songs for Crossing the Threshold. Drawing on original archival research, interviews with more than fifty of Grisey's colleagues, friends, and lovers, and the study of previously overlooked sketches, this biography shows the delirium and form at the heart of Grisey's life and art--the structured sensuality that allowed him to revolutionize the music of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Harmonic Analysis by : J. Marshall Ash
Download or read book Harmonic Analysis written by J. Marshall Ash and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in the early 1950's, Alberto Calderon, Antoni Zygmund, and their students developed a program in harmonic analysis with far-reaching consequences. The title of these proceedings reflects this broad reach. This book came out of a DePaul University conference honoring Stephen Vagi upon his retirement in 2002. Vagi was a student of Calderon in the 1960's, when Calderon and Zygmund were at their peak. Two authors, Kenig and Gatto, were students of Calderon; one, Muckenhoupt, was a student of Zygmund. Two others studied under Zygmund's student Elias Stein. The remaining authors all have close connections with the Calderon-Zygmund school of analysis. This book should interest specialists in harmonic analysis and those curious to see it applied to partial differential equations and ergodic theory. In the first article, Adam Koranyi summarizes Vagi's work. Four additional articles cover various recent developments in harmonic analysis: Eduardo Gatto studies spaces with doubling and non-doubling measures; Cora Sadosky, product spaces; Benjamin Muckenhoupt, Laguerre expansions; and Roger Jones, singular integrals. Charles Fefferman and Carlos Kenig present applications to partial differential equations and Stephen Wainger gives an application to ergodic theory. The final article records some interesting open questions from a problem session that concluded the conference.
Book Synopsis Cyprus 1974: Anatomy of an Invasion by : Vassilis Fouskas
Download or read book Cyprus 1974: Anatomy of an Invasion written by Vassilis Fouskas and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-13 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom and ideologies hold that responsibility for the partition of the Republic of Cyprus in the wake of Turkey’s multiple advances on the island in summer 1974 rests on domestic ethnic and religious tensions between the Turks and the Greeks. This book, drawing on a wealth of archival material, shows that this is not the case at all. As the detailed report of the United Nations mediator, Galo Plaza, had shown in 1965, the Turks and the Greeks living on the island could easily have co-existed if left alone to determine their future. This did not happen. The partition of the island had been inscribed in NATO’s policy since the 1950s, rewarding the strongest component of NATO’s southern flank, Turkey, at the expense of Greece, the weaker component. The volume details the role of CIA agents in Greece and the machinations of the Greek junta of Dimitrios Ioannides to overthrow the charismatic leader of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios, who had been fighting for an independent and non-aligned Cyprus. It also explains how the partition of Cyprus in 1974 has opened up prospects for the partition of the Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey, with Greece’s eastern Aegean islands becoming ‘NATOlands’ in the service of the war against Russia. The volume is an essential reading for researchers and students of the history and politics of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and south-eastern Europe.
