Book Synopsis Dirty War, Clean Hands by : Paddy Woodworth
Download or read book Dirty War, Clean Hands written by Paddy Woodworth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spain's transition from the Franco dictatorship to a democratic state has been widely regarded as exemplary. However, as modern court proceedings have exposed, the first post-transition government, in attempting to destroy the Basque separatist group ETA, adopted the very policies of indiscriminate terror which characterised both the Franco regime and ETA's own strategy. In this narrative Woodworth disentangles a complex conspiracy through documentary evidence and first-hand interviews. He analyzes what happens when a democracy abandons the rule of law, showing how state terror has strengthened revolutionary terrorism and raising questions about post-Franco Spain.
Book Synopsis The Horn and the Halo by : Hilbert Bernard Pompey
Download or read book The Horn and the Halo written by Hilbert Bernard Pompey and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Horn and the Halo is about an angelic demon who somehow ended up with a halo wedged over one of his horns. His childlike behavior and animated thoughts compel you to see him as a lovable character although he can be very devilish. As Lord Devil begins to plot against Thath, the book transitions to earth, where the Defense Forces (good guys and gals) are protecting the people of earth and the planet itself. The various characters in the military all play a vital role as a team to maintain the balance of the forces, as well as themselves. Each one is a very strong leader to include one of the new recruits. Although this is a fictional book, you might see yourself or someone you know in one or more of the characters. The book starts off in a very melodic poetry format articulated in rhyme similar to that of Dr. Seuss, except Bernards style goes from an urban Ebonics flair and the new and old biblical testament to scientific language, scholarly thought, and of course, his own developed language and grammar. The transitions of word styles and the creativity of the books journey is reminiscent of how we thought when we used to just simply go outside and play. The book is truly a reflection of Bernards freedom to express himself and his mind.

Book Synopsis Horror Comics in Black and White by : Richard J. Arndt
Download or read book Horror Comics in Black and White written by Richard J. Arndt and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-01-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, the comic book industry instituted the Comics Code, a set of self-regulatory guidelines imposed to placate public concern over gory and horrific comic book content, effectively banning genuine horror comics. Because the Code applied only to color comics, many artists and writers turned to black and white to circumvent the Code's narrow confines. With the 1964 Creepy #1 from Warren Publishing, black-and-white horror comics experienced a revival continuing into the early 21st century, an important step in the maturation of the horror genre within the comics field as a whole. This generously illustrated work offers a comprehensive history and retrospective of the black-and-white horror comics that flourished on the newsstands from 1964 to 2004. With a catalog of original magazines, complete credits and insightful analysis, it highlights an important but overlooked period in the history of comics.

Book Synopsis Models Of Nature by : Douglas R. Weiner
Download or read book Models Of Nature written by Douglas R. Weiner and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a new afterword by the authorA study of the early and turbulent years of the Soviet conservation movement. Focusing on the period from the October Revolution to the mid-1930s (from Lenin's rule to the rise of Stalin), Douglas R. Weiner studies the divergence between the growing ecological movement in the country and the state's social and economic policies. The book offers a view of both sides of this dispute: scientific conservation movements on the one hand and an industrializing nation's attitude toward science, scientists, nature, and massive development on the other. Weiner explains the development of pioneering conservation institutions, state practices, and ecological theory in the Soviet Union during the 1920s , and why those developments were sidelined or quashed by Stalin. The book provides a telling example of the social construction of science, showing how the perceived political implications of rival ecological theories influenced Soviet scientists, and chronicles the nature protection movement's conflicts with both the vigilantes of the Cultural Revolution and Stalin's first Five-Year Plan, which blatantly ignored potential environmental consequences in its quest to industrialize on a large scale. The new afterword reflects upon the study's impact and discusses advances in the field since the book was first published. Now in paperback, this classic text is well suited for course use in Russian history, environmental studies, and history of science.

Book Synopsis Rene, el Tigre, & Me by : Norm Leventhal
Download or read book Rene, el Tigre, & Me written by Norm Leventhal and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rene, el Tigre, & Me By: Norm Leventhal After 50 years of private practice in the field of communications law, Norm Leventhal has decided to write the story of how he was fortunate enough to meet the two principal forces in the birth, growth, and maturity of Spanish language television in America and how his law career became thoroughly intertwined with these two giants of Spanish media for more than four decades. It is a story of the development of Spanish language television in the United States – its modest beginnings, the sacrifices made by its pioneers, its growth over the last five decades, and what it took – in financial, business, artistic, and legal talent – to achieve this newfound success. It is also, more importantly, a story of the lessons that the author learned, or should have learned, in his role as counsel to the major players in this achievement. It recounts the highpoints of that effort, as well as the failure in temperament and character that played a part in the mistakes and missteps in judgment that were made in the course of those labors. There are many twists, turns, and unexpected events. Read the entirety of this book and learn something new.
