Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British have always been obsessed by the weather. Astronomers at Durham Observatory began weather observations in 1841; weather records continue unbroken to this day, one of the longest continuous series of single-site weather records in Europe. Durham Weather and Climate since 1841 represents the first full publication of this newly digitised record of English weather, which will be of lasting appeal to interested readers and climate researchers alike. The book celebrates 180 years of weather in north-east England by describing how the records were (and are) made and the people who made them, examines monthly and seasonal weather patterns and extremes across two centuries, and considers long-term climate change. Local documentary sources and contemporary photographs bring the statistics to life, from the great flood of 1771 and skating on the frozen River Wear in February 1895 right up to Durham's hottest-ever day in July 2019 and its wettest winter in 2021. Extensive links are provided to full daily weather records back to 1843. This volume is a sister publication to Oxford Weather and Climate since 1767 by the same authors, published by Oxford University Press in 2019.

Book excerpt: Following the lives of the three ships with the name Rainbow Warrior, this book, written by a long-serving Greenpeace activist, tells the inside stories of life on board and recounts some of the ship's most exciting adventures and actions. It is at once a narrative of real life on board, a history of some of the most famous vessels in the world, and also a history of Greenpeace itself, which goes beyond the oceans and touches on many aspects of the organization's work. In the end though it aims to bring out the personal stories and firsthand accounts of the ships' adventures—tales from the high seas, full of action and daring but also of humanity and great compassion. Starting with the early life of Greenpeace and the bombing of the Rainbow Warrior I by the French secret service through to the imprisonment of the Arctic 30 by the Russians, the stories are brought to life with photos from the Greenpeace archives, maps, and nautical charts. The most symbolic items belonging to the ship's historical inventory are be also included. Maite Mompo has been a Greenpeace activist for over ten years. With the sea in her blood she started on a small boat, the Zorba, and then moved on to crew for the Arctic Sunrise, Esperanza, and Rainbow Warrior. Spending half her year at sea, she has sailed from pole to pole, taken part in numerous actions, and has put herself "between the harpoon and the whale."

Any person foolish enough to try any of the acts talked about in this book is an idiot and should be in a mental institute, or at the very least alcoholics' anonymous. This is a great book to give to the youth of America just so...they know that there is a John Tamar out there and they know things could be so much worse. I, for one, am truly ashamed that this man is still free to roam around the streets without having any warning signs for the rest of society." - Beardo Tensley"John has always been one that believes if you can dream it you can do it. Reading the pages inside, you learn how John became a highly skilled author/athlete slashy, and inspires all readers to do things sober they have once done drunk." - Anthony C. Jones"If you read this book you will find out why my wife and I have so much gray hair. Our son kept us up many nights wondering what he was up to in the middle of the night. This is a must read book to see what your children may be up to. Love, Mom and Dad"Author Bio: Author John Tamar wrote this book not to inspire a bunch of drunks to try to replicate what he and his friends have done, but to make you laugh and look back at the crazy times in your life.Publisher's website: http: //SBPRA.com/JohnTamar

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the issue of the lack of integration and common policy among Japan’s cultural promotion actors and institutions, Gadjeva explores an integrated approach for Japanese public diplomacy through public-private partnerships. She examines the potential of the Japan Foundation as a central public diplomacy actor in Europe, facilitating a Public-Private Partnership Platform. Focusing on France and Bulgaria, Gadjeva observes the Japan Foundation’s role, contributions, and activities implemented between the 1970s and 2018, both autonomously and in collaboration with Japanese and local public and private actors. She compares the Foundation’s initiatives in the two countries, highlighting both the strong points and the space for improvement. In addition, Gadjeva points out essential Japanese, French, and Bulgarian actors with potential for future cooperation with the Japan Foundation through public-private partnerships. Drawing on her interviews with Bulgarian and French representatives, she examines the image of Japan and the future expectations from Japan. Revealing certain cultural aspects and less-explored areas of Japanese soft power, she proposes specific project proposals for integrated public diplomacy initiatives implemented through a Public-Private Partnership Platform facilitated by the Japan Foundation. Providing valuable insights into the strong and insufficient points of Japan’s public diplomacy in Europe and policy recommendations, this book will be of great interest to scholars and professionals in the spheres of Japanese public diplomacy, foreign cultural policy, and Japanese-European international relations.

Book excerpt: My mother was born with an extra piece of skin on her face. The doctor removed the extra piece of skin with a pair of scissors and placed the skin in a jar. He told my grandmother that he had seen this before and called the extra piece of skin “a veil.” He then told my grandmother, Mom-mom, to sell this bottle with the extra piece of skin inside to a captain of a ship because the ship would not sink and she would be rewarded (in 1930) with money. Mom-mom did not sell the bottle with the extra piece of skin; instead, she saved it for my mother and gave it to her when she was older. I really believe that many people do not know the true significance of the veil, yet I believe in it and its importance. It is a mystery. This was an indication of the life my mom would live, as well as her true faith, which she demonstrated on a daily basis. She was, and always will be, one of a kind. I am honored to be named after her and be her first daughter. She is my hero, and I am glad that I wrote this book in memory of her.
