Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a critical understanding and evaluation of police tactics and the use of force Police violence has historically played an important role in shaping public attitudes toward the government. Community trust and confidence in policing have been undermined by the perception that officers are using force unnecessarily, too frequently, or in problematic ways. The use of force, or harm suffered by a community as a result of such force, can also serve as a flashpoint, a spark that ignites long-simmering community hostility. In Evaluating Police Uses of Force, legal scholar Seth W. Stoughton, former deputy chief of police Jeffrey J. Noble, and distinguished criminologist Geoffrey P. Alpert explore a critical but largely overlooked facet of the difficult and controversial issues of police violence and accountability: how does society evaluate use-of-force incidents? By leading readers through answers to this question from four different perspectives—constitutional law, state law, administrative regulation, and community expectations—and by providing critical information about police tactics and force options that are implicated within those frameworks, Evaluating Police Uses of Force helps situate readers within broader conversations about governmental accountability, the role that police play in modern society, and how officers should go about fulfilling their duties.

This is consistent with their emphasis on seeking ‘that of God in everyone’ and their commitment to finding nonviolent ways to respond to conflict. In this lecture, drawing on long experience, Sally Herzfeld outlines the remarkable development of AVP within prisons, schools and social groups, and its spread to 60 countries. The philosophy and processes used in AVP workshops are explained in a way that makes it clear why this approach has changed many lives and helped build more peaceful communities.

Book excerpt: This study examines the effects on incarcerated veterans who participate in an Alternatives to Violence Project workshop, a group-based intervention that imparts communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills. The study attempts to answer the question “What is the effect of participating in AVP workshops on incarcerated veterans?” and hypothesizes that participation in AVP will improve incarcerated veterans’ experience of anger. The sample was comprised of veterans incarcerated in a county jail in the western US. The results suggest that participation in an AVP workshop has a therapeutically positive effect on participants by creating a sense of community, self-awareness, and self-empowerment, as well as improving several aspects of their experience of anger. Policy implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope for American democracy in an era of deep divisions In Healing the Heart of Democracy, Parker J. Palmer quickens our instinct to seek the common good and gives us the tools to do it. This timely, courageous and practical work—intensely personal as well as political—is not about them, "those people" in Washington D.C., or in our state capitals, on whom we blame our political problems. It's about us, "We the People," and what we can do in everyday settings like families, neighborhoods, classrooms, congregations and workplaces to resist divide-and-conquer politics and restore a government "of the people, by the people, for the people." In the same compelling, inspiring prose that has made him a bestselling author, Palmer explores five "habits of the heart" that can help us restore democracy's foundations as we nurture them in ourselves and each other: An understanding that we are all in this together An appreciation of the value of "otherness" An ability to hold tension in life-giving ways A sense of personal voice and agency A capacity to create community Healing the Heart of Democracy is an eloquent and empowering call for "We the People" to reclaim our democracy. The online journal Democracy & Education called it "one of the most important books of the early 21st Century." And Publishers Weekly, in a Starred Review, said "This beautifully written book deserves a wide audience that will benefit from discussing it."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To witness effectively and powerfully to Christian testimonies of care and compassion, of justice and mercy, of healing and wholeness, it is necessary to foster awareness of the realities of the present system of retributive justice if there is to be any hope of transformation to a system of justice which is restorative. Forget Them Not provides a history of the prison system as a means of punishment contrasting it with the relatively recent but growing practice of restorative justice. Joanne Hemenway explores the concept of disconnection as radical evil, as a separation from God who is the source of our being, and shows how our present approach to punishment fosters this evil. The present system, with its motif of retributive justice, generates shame, rejection, and loneliness which stokes the fires of anger and rage. This breeds deep disconnection which only serves to fuel further cycles of violence. Hemenway presents three vignettes designed to help explore forgiveness in the context of both retributive and restorative justice. To promote healing and connection, Forget Them Not introduces compassionate witnessing in prison ministry as a way to develop awareness and empowerment.

Drawing on cultural myths and fairy tales, ancient symbols and goddesses, and the dreams of contemporary women, Murdock illustrates the need for—and the reality of—feminine values in Western culture. This special anniversary edition, with a new foreword by Christine Downing and preface by the author, illuminates that this need is just as relevant today as it was when the book was originally published thirty years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AVP [Alternatives to Violence Project] has been holding workshops in Kenya since 2003. Many participants have spoken glowingly about its impact in their personal lives and workplaces. The purpose of this evaluation is to find out if the project is achieving its goals, and how it might strengthen its impact throughout the country. The methodology for this evaluation was to elicit personal testimonies to discern the impact of AVP in Kenya. Some of our key questions focused on: What has changed in the personal lives of those who attended workshops? In what ways does AVP equip people to deal with violence and conflict in their workplaces? (in particular those working as pastors, prison officers and counselors) In what ways does AVP suit Kenyan culture? In what ways does it challenge cultural assumptions in a positive way? In what ways might it negatively effect Kenyan culture? This report provides a background for AVP, its implementing organizations in Kenya and the specific context in Kenya's Western, Rift, and Nyanza Provinces. We outline the method used to gather information, highlight the findings, and make recommendations for AVP's future in Kenya. -- Author's abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Quaker's View Of Gendlin's Philosophy explores the social implications of Eugene Gendlin's Philosophy of the Implicit as it functions in Quaker Practice. The book crosses Gendlin's experiential concept of the Implicit with how the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) organize around seeking what they call the Light Within. The book's first part describes the Friend's silent meeting as it is practiced in the US and the UK. It sets out that the environment created by Quakers is a gathering circle where change and transformation can take place. Next, the book explores the way Quakers make a decision by arriving at a "sense of the meeting", then writing a minute of that decision. The book shows that reaching a decision by writing a minute is a group explication process that lets meeting members arrive at a shared sense of meaning and unity in their decisions. The book's second part looks at the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP). New York Quakers first developed AVP workshops in the 1970's to facilitate non-violence in US prisons. The Quakers modified their gathering circle to facilitate change and transformation in and with prison inmate participants. The book looks at how the Quakers adapted their gathering circle to fit the needs of working with prison inmates by making their gathering circle more explicit, more active, and more structured. Further, since AVP facilitators take notes and write reports on their workshops, the book describes how change and transformations take place among inmates within and as a result of the workshops.

Book excerpt: David Hartsough knows how to get in the way. He has used his body to block Navy ships headed for Vietnam and trains loaded with munitions on their way to El Salvador and Nicaragua. He has crossed borders to meet “the enemy” in East Berlin, Castro’s Cuba, and present-day Iran. He has marched with mothers confronting a violent regime in Guatemala and stood with refugees threatened by death squads in the Philippines. Waging Peace is a testament to the difference one person can make. Hartsough’s stories inspire, educate, and encourage readers to find ways to work for a more just and peaceful world. Inspired by the examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., Hartsough has spent his life experimenting with the power of active nonviolence. It is the story of one man’s effort to live as though we were all brothers and sisters. Engaging stories on every page provide a peace activist’s eyewitness account of many of the major historical events of the past sixty years, including the Civil Rights and anti–Vietnam War movements in the United States and the little-known but equally significant nonviolent efforts in the Soviet Union, Kosovo, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines. Hartsough’s story demonstrates the power and effectiveness of organized nonviolent action. But Waging Peace is more than one man’s memoir. Hartsough shows how this struggle is waged all over the world by ordinary people committed to ending the spiral of violence and war.
