Or have they been taught, coached, rewarded, and reinforced in ways that enable them to be leaders? In The 108 Skills of Natural Born Leaders, you'll learn that no one is born a leader. But everyone has the natural born capacity to lead. We label people "natural born leaders" because they consistently and frequently model qualities that inspire others to commit to their direction. This book identifies the skill set that causes others to see people as natural born leaders, helping you assess your current level of these skills and coaching you to master your weak areas. You will learn: Foundation skills, including self-awareness and the ability to establish rapport. Direction skills, including the ability to set a course and develop others as leaders. Willing follower skills, including the ability to influence others and create a motivating environment.

Book excerpt: In this probing study of the growth experience of Fortune 100-sized firms across the past fifty years, authors Olson and van Bever find that great companies stop growing not because of market saturation, government regulation, or other external constraints but rather because of a finite set of common strategy mistakes that appear time after time, across industries, across geography, and across the economic cycle."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relevance of applied economic and social analysis stands or falls with the strength of the analytical tools, on the one hand, and the appropriateness of the underlying data framework, on the other hand. Whereas virtually all economic and sociological research focuses on the analytical tools, this book deals with the design of an appropriate data framework. In many countries, it is not so much a lack of data per se that is the problem. Official statistics often comprise a wealth of information, laid down in many different publications. The main difficulty then relates to the lack of integration of these statistics, so that all kinds of events that are interrelated in reality can only be studied in isolation. Of course, the lack of integration of statistics applies less to economic data, as the national accounts function as a coordinating information system for these data. In fact, an important aim of this book is to demonstrate that the basic principles of national accounts can and should be extended to a wider range of statistics, notably social and environmental statistics. For this purpose, a so-called System of Economic and Social Accounting Matrices and Extensions (SESAME) is designed and applied in this book, following its announcement in the 1993 System of National Accounts, the guidelines of the United Nations and other international organizations.

Book excerpt: Delta Air Lines Inc. (Delta), headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., was the world's second-largest airline providing air transportation for passengers, cargo, and mail. Delta operated an extensive domestic and international network across all continents in the world except Antarctica. It was also a founding partner of the SkyTeam airline alliance.Delta had used mergers and acquisitions (M&A) successfully to solidify its strong position as a leader in the airline industry. It had gone through five M&As since 1953, including the most recent acquisition of Northwest Airlines (Northwest), which turned Delta into an airline with major operations in every region of the world. On the other hand, the Northwest merger took a toll on Delta's financial position by contributing to its high long-term debt.In 2012, top management was cautiously exploring opportunities for entering new markets, routes, and partnerships in order to boost market share. The airline industry was known for being extremely competitive with significant market share volatility, strong price competition, and low brand loyalty. Management was also searching for ways to reduce costs and expenses in an industry that was rapidly consolidating into fewer major national and international players.

Book excerpt: As World War II paralyzed many of Electrolux's manufacturing plants, the company reorganized some of its production facilities and made air filters and steel fittings for the Swedish defence forces. Following the end of the war, the company continued on its path to dominating the household appliance industry by introducing the first household washing machine in 1951 and the first household dishwasher in 1959. Acquisitions of other companies played an important role in the growth of Electrolux throughout the past 90 years and it helped the company become a global player in the industry. It has acquired over 300 companies from various countries throughout the world providing Electrolux with better production capabilities and access to large mature markets and established brand names, such as Eureka, Frigidaire and Kelvinator. Following years of acquisitions, in 1997, Eletrolux began a two-year restructuring program in an effort to improve its bottom line. It divested several of its sectors including industrial products, sewing machines and vending machines, the company laid off 11,000 employees and closed 23 plants and 50 warehouses. Following its success in the European markets, Electrolux-branded appliances were introduced in North America in 2004. Hans Stråberg was appointed Electrolux's President & CEO in 2002 and remains in that position today. The company is currently the world's second largest appliance maker, behind Whirlpool. Electrolux has over 50,000 employees in over 50 countries around the world. Its headquarters are in Stockholm, Sweden.
