Shannon, this series provides anthologies of critical essays and reflections by leading ethicists in four pivotal areas: reproductive technologies, genetic technologies, death and dying, and health care policy. The goal of this series is twofold: first, to provide a set of readers on thematic topics for introductory or survey courses in bioethics or for courses with a particular theme or time limitation. Second, each of the readers in this series is designed to help students focus more thoroughly and effectively on specific topics that flesh out the ethical issues at the core of bioethics. The series is also highly accessible to general readers interested in bioethics.

Book excerpt: Advances in medical treatment now enable physicians to prolong life to a previously unknown extent, however in many instances these new techniques mean not the saving of life but prolonging the act of dying. In the eyes of many, medical technology has run out of control and contributes to unnecessary suffering. Hence the demand has arisen that patients should be entitled to choose death when pain and physical and mental deterioration have destroyed the possibility of a dignified and meaningful life and that their doctors should help them to realize this endeavor. At the present time there are seven jurisdictions in the world that, with various restrictions, have legalized the practice of assisted death -- physician-assisted suicide and/or voluntary euthanasia - to wit, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland in Europe and the states of Oregon, Washington and Montana in the United States. Four of these regimes - in the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and the state of Oregon -- have been functioning for many years, and we have for them a substantial body of data as well as much observational research. This book is based upon this material. The literature dealing with the moral, legal and social aspects of assisted death is voluminous, but there is a paucity of writing that provides a detailed account of the way these four regimes are actually working. Many partisans, on both sides of the issue, cite existing data selectively or, at times, willfully distort the empirical evidence in order to strengthen their case. Based on the documentary record and interviews with officials and scholars, this book seeks to give the specialist as well as the general interested reader a reliable picture of the way assisted death functions and to draw relevant lessons. While accurate factual information cannot settle a moral debate, it nevertheless is a precondition of any well-founded argument.'The author speaks authoritatively about the issues he addresses. I think this book does make an important contribution to the field. It will be of interest to students and scholars of PAS as a source of information and reference. I definitely recommend publication.' Stuart Youngner, Department of Bioethics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine'The information collected here makes an important contribution to the literature on PAS because it collects a broad array of relevant information into a single volume. It is interesting and enlightening. This will make the book a valuable resource for anyone interested in the subject and an especially useful resource for academics who study or teach about the issues.' Rosamond Rhodes, Director, Bioethics Education, Mt Sinai School of Medicine

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Historians may have locked the box on the JFK assassination and the life of Lyndon Baines Johnson but in reading James Norvell's riveting "out of the box" tale, you will shiver with nagging thoughts of intrigue and doubt. Norvell's semi-fictitious story, bolstered with historical facts, is a spellbinding masterpiece. He has interacted with principal characters - particularly Madeleine Brown and Billie Sol Estes - and done so in a personal manner and over an extended period of time. The more you read, the more you'll wonder, "Could this have happened?" Be careful - once you pick it up you won't put it down. Dynamite!" John H. (Jack) Grubbs, Ph.D, Brigadier General (Ret.), U. S. Army, author of Dryline and Bad Intentions. "Jim Norvell's unique approach to explaining the assassination of President Kennedy leads the reader into this complex and often difficult subject from a fresh direction. I recommend this book primarily because it exposes even the experienced student of the subject to information with which he may not have been familiar, and to possible associations between 'competing theories' about what happened in Dallas, that may indicate many of them are not necessarily mutually exclusive after all. Mr. Norvell does not pull any punches, and does not sugar-coat the assassination story in any way. An engaging read." Douglas P. Horne, formerly Chief Analyst for Military Records, Assassination Records Review Board, B.A. in History, Ohio State University, and author of Inside the Assassination Records Review Board, Vol. I-V. "My classmate from the Naval Academy, Jim Norvell, has put together a very shocking scenario that leads to a very different assassination event than the "lone gunman, lone event, Oswald-did-it" type answer. Instead he constructs a list of timed events with key power brokers in 1963 that provides a hard-core conspiratorial assassination plot. . . And if you are not entirely convinced these diverse power brokers can mesh and team to make the killing of a President possible, then go very slowly through the chapters that lay down the assassination time lines . . .Point by point, bullet by bullet, the historical novel unfolds. . . .But I assure you that it will not end with a lone event, a lone gunman. Two additional assassinations follow with the shootings of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. Norvell drives you back in time to the 60's to piece together for you an entirely different assassination than the one focused on Oswald and defended as such by the Warren Commission. This is a very good read for all and especially for those who to this day can remember where we were on November 22, 1963." Alexander J. Krekich, Vice Admiral, U. S. Navy (Retired); B.S. U.S. Naval Academy 1964, M.S.A. George Washington University, 1972; U.S. Army Command & General Staff College, 1973; and Naval War College, 1978. "I extend personal thanks to Jim Norvell for his deep insights, for connections not uncovered anywhere else, and for bringing us nearer to the solution to the most horrific crime in American History, horrific for what it did to one man and his family, horrific for what it did to America, and horrific for the failure of the authorities to mete out justice." Barr McClellan, B.A., J.D., University of Texas, author of Blood, Money and Power, How LBJ Killed JFK, and former law partner with LBJ's attorney, Ed Clark. "Jim Norvell's historical novel is a truly remarkable study of a broad range of facts surrounding a single individual. What he has carefully developed is almost unthinkable to well-adjusted human beings. To my knowledge, this depiction has not been accomplished before in our time, and he should be commended for all the long years of effort that it required. I found that his identification of LBJ as a narcissist is quite well-founded. There is a long and well-established history of those traits among world leaders in every field, many in very public roles. Health care professionals have identified and articulated in textbooks different types of narcissism and their symptomatic traits, some of which are incredibly destructive and actually evil. Jim's novel acutely and accurately displays the personification of pure evil in LBJ. I think he has written a serious best-seller which will lead readers to thoughtfully and carefully examine the traits and actions which our public figures display." Ray C. Witter, Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy (Ret.), B.S. U.S. Naval Academy, M.S., Engineering Accoustics, Naval Postgraduate School

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Department of Justice's National Institute of Justice (NIJ) asked the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of The National Academies to conduct a workshop that would examine the interface of the medicolegal death investigation system and the criminal justice system. NIJ was particularly interested in a workshop in which speakers would highlight not only the status and needs of the medicolegal death investigation system as currently administered by medical examiners and coroners but also its potential to meet emerging issues facing contemporary society in America. Additionally, the workshop was to highlight priority areas for a potential IOM study on this topic. To achieve those goals, IOM constituted the Committee for the Workshop on the Medicolegal Death Investigation System, which developed a workshop that focused on the role of the medical examiner and coroner death investigation system and its promise for improving both the criminal justice system and the public health and health care systems, and their ability to respond to terrorist threats and events. Six panels were formed to highlight different aspects of the medicolegal death investigation system, including ways to improve it and expand it beyond its traditional response and meet growing demands and challenges. This report summarizes the Workshop presentations and discussions that followed them.

That is the definition of a maxim in “Time Warp”, a new unique collection of thoughts and phrases for the fans of aphorismic humor from the author of intellectual thriller “America, God, Love”. In the «Time Warp» centuries of armenian wit and soviet style underground punchlines are mixed together. The first and the only book that can be read endlessly! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paper Garden is unlike anything else you have ever read. At once a biography of an extraordinary 18th century gentlewoman and a meditation on late-life creativity, it is a beautifully written tour de force from an acclaimed poet. Mary Granville Pendarves Delany (1700-1788) was the witty, beautiful and talented daughter of a minor branch of a powerful family. Married off at 16 to a 61-year-old drunken squire to improve the family fortunes, she was widowed by 25, and henceforth had a small stipend and a horror of a marriage. She spurned many suitors over the next twenty years, including the powerful Lord Baltimore and the charismatic radical John Wesley. She cultivated a wide circle of friends, including Handel and Jonathan Swift. And she painted, she stitched, she observed, as she swirled in the outskirts of the Georgian court. In mid-life she found love, and married. Upon her husband's death 23 years later, she arose from her grief, picked up a pair of scissors and, at the age of 72, created a new art form, mixed-media collage. Over the next decade, Mrs Delany created an astonishing 985 botanically correct, breathtaking cut-paper flowers, now housed in the British Museum and referred to as the Botanica Delanica. Delicately, Peacock has woven parallels in her own life around the story of Mrs Delany's and, in doing so, has made this biography into a profound and beautiful examination of the nature of creativity and art. Gorgeously designed and featuring 35 full-colour illustrations, this is a sumptuous and lively book full of fashion and friendships, gossip and politics, letters and love. It's to be devoured as voraciously as one of the court dinners it describes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belgium and the Netherlands - the Low Countries - are the first countries in the world to have legalized euthanasia. Physicians who terminate life at the patient's request no longer have to fear criminal prosecution. However, end-of-life legislation in the Low Countries has provoked diverse responses and sparked vigorous and divisive ethical debate. For some, the new legislation has become a shining example; for others it is a lamentable materialization of a culture of death. Euthanasia and Palliative Care in the Low Countries provides an overview and comparison of the legal specifics of the Belgian and Dutch Euthanasia Acts, a discussion of palliative care initiatives and an ethical examination of the new legislation. In addition, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the arguments used in the end-of-life debate and a critical examination of the positions taken by the churches. The book concludes with an overview of how Christian health-care institutions accommodate to this new legal situation.
