Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are currently a growing number of laboratories actively studying the mechanism by which various biological membranes are assembled. This area of research is still relatively new to biochemists and molecular biologists, but in view of the rapid progress being made, a review of the field at this time is justified. The present volume focuses on the biogenesis of three related membranes. Mitochondria and chloroplasts are semiautonomous organelles whose biogenesis is carried out partly in the external cytoplasm and partly by the organelles themselves. Both membranes are principally concerned with the energy metabolism of the cell, and this commonality of function is reflected in a considerable degree of similarity in their ul trastructure and enzymatic composition. Although the bacterial cell membrane is a much more diversified structure, it also fulfills the basic energy requirements of the cell, and depending on the organism, this can take the form of photosynthesis or oxidative phosphorylation. The addi tional consideration that prokaryotic organisms may, in fact, be the evolu tionary ancestors of mitochondria and chloroplasts, makes it all the more compelling that those interested in biogenesis be aware of new develop ments in each of these three areas. In organizing this book, I felt that the contributors should summarize and bring up to date their own research and review the literature only in sofar as would be necessary to provide the proper perspective for their work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cytoplasmic Genes and Organelles is about cytoplasmic genes: what they are and what they do. It applies the concepts and methods of cytoplasmic genetics to the problems of cell and molecular biology to which they can uniquely contribute. It shows geneticists the many attractive problems in this area awaiting their attention; cell biologists and biochemists the usefulness of cytoplasmic genetic analysis in their endeavors; and students the potential power of an integrated experimental approach using cytoplasmic genes together with the more conventional tools of biochemistry and electron microscopy in the investigation of organelle biogenesis. The book treats the following aspects of cytoplasmic genetic systems: (1) the properties of cytoplasmic DNA; (2) the genetic analysis of cytoplasmic systems; and (3) the functions of cytoplasmic genes in organelle biogenesis. The opening chapter summarizes the principal findings to provide readers with a bird's eye view of the subject. Subsequent chapters cover topics such as cytoplastmic DNAs; cytoplasmic genes in Chlamydomonas; mitochondrial genetics of yeast; cytoplasmic genes in higher plants; the role of mitochondrial genes in mitochondrial biogenesis; and cytoplasmic genes and cell heredity.

Book excerpt: Many modern geneticists attempt to elucidate the molecular basis of phenotype by utilizing a battery of techniques derived from physical chemistry on subcellular components isolated from various species of organisms. Volume 5 of the Handbook of Genetics provides explanations of the advantages and shortcomings of some of these revolutionary tech niques, and the nonspecialist is alerted to key research papers, reviews, and reference works. Much of the text deals with the structure and func tioning of the molecules bearing genetic information which reside in the nucleus and with the processing of this information by the ribosomes resid ing in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. The mitochondria, which also live in the cytoplasm of the cells of all eukaryotes, now appear to be separate little creatures. These, as Lynn Margulis pointed out in Volume 1, are the colonial posterity of migrant prokaryotes, probably primitive bacteria that swam into the ancestral precursors of all eukaryotic cells and remained as symbionts. They have maintained themselves and their ways ever since, replicating their own DNA and transcribing an RNA quite different from that of their hosts. In a similar manner, the chloroplasts in all plants are self-replicating organelles presumably derived from the blue-green algae, with their own nucleic acids and ribosomes. Four chapters are devoted to the nucleic acids and the ribosomal components of both classes of these semi-independent lodgers. Finally, data from various sources on genetic variants of enzymes are tabulated for ready reference, and an evaluation of this information is attempted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eleventh International Latin American Symposium is an important mile stone reflecting the rapid development of basic biochemistry in Latin America. The topic "Gene Expression and Its Regulation" was received enthusiastically, and, thanks to the vision of our Argentine colleagues, the program developed rapidly under the leadership of Dr. Gabriel Favelukes as General Secretary of the Symposium. It is interesting to note the tremendous progress that has been made in basic and applied sciences in Latin America over the past few years. The increasing initiative and leadership being demonstrated by our Latin American colleagues in organizing these symposia is a most satisfying development that speaks well for the future of science in Latin America. The early publication of this symposium has been made possible through the efforts of an editorial board consisting of Dr. F. T. Kenney (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), Dr. Gabriel Favelukes (University of La Plata), Dr. Barbara Ham kalo (Oak Ridge National Laboratory), and Dr. J. T. August (Albert Einstein College of Medicine). As in previous symposia, excellent support has come from the Ford Founda tion through a grant to the National Academy of Sciences, the United States Atomic Energy Commission, the National Science Foundation, OAS, and other groups. Through the cooperation of the authorities at the University of La Plata, the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (the United States cosponsoring university), and other schools, this very successful symposium was made possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant cells contain various types of plastid, the best known among which is the chloroplast. Apart from their predominant interest for the work on photo synthesis, however, chloroplasts have attracted considerable attention for other reasons. This pertains to extranuclear inheritance of cell organelles and, particularly important for this series, to the participation of chloroplasts as discrete and partly autonomous cell constituents in the developmental biochemistry of plants. This volume is composed of articles by investigators who are actively involved in work on various aspects of research on chloroplasts. Each author has independently covered and analyzed as comprehensively as possible the particular aspects assigned to him. This has the advantage of bringing out many different facets of the situation, though some overlapping has-to be taken into account. We are sure that this volume will enable the reader to gain a broad theoretical and experimental basis for the understanding of the development of chloroplasts and the relationship between plant cells and these organelles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell Biology, A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume 2: The Structure and Replication of Genetic Material is mainly about the structure and replication of genetic material in both the nucleus and cytoplasmic organelles. This volume is part of the first four volumes that establish a firm foundation regarding issues of cell structure and function. These issues include cell reproduction, differentiation, and cell-to-cell interactions. This book is divided into nine chapters. Each chapter deals extensively with chromosomes – its physical, genetic, and chemical structures. In addition, this book explains the replication of chromosomes in terms of the cell cycle, as well as their coding capacity. It also discusses the functional organization (structure and levels) of the chromosomes. The concluding chapters present the DNA replication molecular principles and enzymatic machinery. Furthermore, this book explains DNA repair and its relationship to various biological endpoints. The authors of this book reasonably explain and emphasize already established facts and concepts in terms that are relatively easy to understand. Undergraduate and graduate students, teachers, researchers, scientists, and others interested or in need of information regarding cell biology will find this book of great use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central role of the ribonucleic acids (RNA) in mediating the expression of information encoded in DNA in living cells is now well established. Research in this area of biology continues at a remarkable rate, and new and significant information appears almost daily in a wide range of journals, published symposia and specialist reviews. The diverse nature of this information makes it difficult for the newcomer to the field of RNA biochemistry to obtain a general view of established concepts, current activity, and new advances. Moreover, the reviews available are frequently concerned with insular aspects of these Ubiquitous molecules, or in the case of text books, the subject is treated as part of a general outline of proper ties of nucleic acids and thus may be superficial. The authors of the chapters in this collection attempt to provide a comprehensive, though not overly detailed, outline of the biologi cal roles of RNA. They have written for students with basic training in biochemistry, but otherwise with a wide variety of biological interests-plant physiology, virology, organelle bio chemistry, genetics, cell biology, differentiation and development. Viral RNA, which was dealt with as a separate chapter in the first edition, has been deleted from this edition because it is an unman ageably large single topic, and at the same time is addressed in a number of ways in many different places in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition from the quarterly Sub-Cellular Biochemistry to the annual SUBCELLULAR BIOCHEMISTRY is a good opportunity to restate the aims and scope of this publication. They were originally given (in Volume 1 No. 1) as follows: This review and essay journal . . . brings together work on a wide range of topics in sub-cellular biochemistry in the hope of stimulating progress towards an integrated view of the cell. It deals with the biochemistry and general biology of nuclei, mitochondria, lysosomes, peroxisomes, chloroplasts, cell membranes, ribosomes, cell sap, flagellae and other specialized cell components. In addition to articles dealing with conventional biochemical studies on sub-cellular struc tures, the journal publishes articles on the genetics, evolution and biogenesis of cell organelles, bioenergetics, membrane behaviour and the interaction between cell structures, particularly between nucleus and cytoplasm. The first four volumes (in the quarterly format) fulfilled many, but not all, of these stated aims, and it is hoped that further articles in the new annual series will soon fill any deficiencies in the range of topics covered. Over the years we have intentionally not interpreted the title of the publication in a too literal sense. Although we have included specific articles on individual subcellular fractions (and certainly hope to do so again) the publication is definitely not only concerned with studies on the biochemistry of isolated cell fractions. The primary target is the "integrated view of the cell.
