Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an analysis effort undertaken to address the following research question: What sensor(s) can be cost effectively added to vehicles on a wide scale to significantly improve our understanding and modeling of naturalistic near-crash/pre-crash driver performance? Current sensor and computer technology allows for the efficient collection and storage of driver and vehicle performance data on board vehicles. Crash data recorders or black boxes exist today on many vehicles though they are limited in number of recorded parameters and storage capacity. However, their capability is increasing. Recent field operational tests of advanced-technology crash avoidance systems and naturalistic driving data collection efforts have employed comprehensive data acquisition systems to characterize driver and vehicle performance as well as the driving environment. These projects gathered data on driver exposure to various environmental factors and on driver encounters with driving conflicts, near-crashes, and actual crashes. Unfortunately, the in-vehicle data acquisition packages in these projects cost over $10,000 per vehicle. It would be advantageous to build and install a very small, inexpensive package under $1,000 in a vehicle fleet of 5,000 or more. The presence of low-cost near-crash/crash event data recorders (EDRs) on thousands of vehicles would enable a more accurate assessment of safety benefits for intelligent vehicle crash avoidance technologies, and would greatly improve the quality of data in national crash databases such as the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) Crashworthiness Data System (CDS) and General Estimates System (GES).

Book excerpt: In recent years, the control of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) has attracted strong attention for various automotive applications. One of the important features demanded of CAVs is collision avoidance, whether it is a stationary or a moving obstacle. Due to complex traffic conditions and various vehicle dynamics, the collision avoidance system should ensure that the vehicle can avoid collision with other vehicles or obstacles in longitudinal and lateral directions simultaneously. The longitudinal collision avoidance controller can avoid or mitigate vehicle collision accidents effectively via Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Brake Assist System (BAS), and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which has been commercially applied in many new vehicles launched by automobile enterprises. But in lateral motion direction, it is necessary to determine a flexible collision avoidance path in real time in case of detecting any obstacle. Then, a path-tracking algorithm is designed to assure that the vehicle will follow the predetermined path precisely, while guaranteeing certain comfort and vehicle stability over a wide range of velocities. In recent years, the rapid development of sensor, control, and communication technology has brought both possibilities and challenges to the improvement of vehicle collision avoidance capability, so collision avoidance system still needs to be further studied based on the emerging technologies. In this book, we provide a comprehensive overview of the current collision avoidance strategies for traditional vehicles and CAVs. First, the book introduces some emergency path planning methods that can be applied in global route design and local path generation situations which are the most common scenarios in driving. A comparison is made in the path-planning problem in both timing and performance between the conventional algorithms and emergency methods. In addition, this book introduces and designs an up-to-date path-planning method based on artificial potential field methods for collision avoidance, and verifies the effectiveness of this method in complex road environment. Next, in order to accurately track the predetermined path for collision avoidance, traditional control methods, humanlike control strategies, and intelligent approaches are discussed to solve the path-tracking problem and ensure the vehicle successfully avoids the collisions. In addition, this book designs and applies robust control to solve the path-tracking problem and verify its tracking effect in different scenarios. Finally, this book introduces the basic principles and test methods of AEB system for collision avoidance of a single vehicle. Meanwhile, by taking advantage of data sharing between vehicles based on V2X (vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure) communication, pile-up accidents in longitudinal direction are effectively avoided through cooperative motion control of multiple vehicles.

Book excerpt: This report defines a new pre-crash scenario typology for crash avoidance research based on the 2004 General Estimates System (GES) crash database, which consists of pre-crash scenarios depicting vehicle movements and dynamics as well as the critical event immediately prior to a crash. This typology establishes a common vehicle safety research foundation for public and private organizations, which will allow researchers to determine which traffic safety issues should be of first priority to investigate and to develop concomitant crash avoidance systems. Its main objectives are to identify all common pre-crash scenarios of all police-reported crashes involving at least one light vehicle (i.e., passenger car, sports utility vehicle, van, minivan, and light pickup truck); quantify their severity in terms of frequency of occurrence, economic cost, and functional years lost; portray each scenario by crash contributing factors and circumstances in terms of the driving environment, driver, and vehicle; and provide nationally representative crash statistics that can be annually updated using national crash databases such as GES. This new typology includes 37 pre-crash scenarios accounting for approximately 5,942,000 police-reported light-vehicle crashes, an estimated economic cost of 120 billion dollars, and 2,767,000 functional years lost. These statistics do not incorporate data from non-police-reported crashes.

Book excerpt: Self-driving cars are no longer in the realm of science fiction, thanks to the integration of numerous automotive technologies that have matured over many years. Technologies such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and V2V/V2I communications are being merged into one complex system. The papers in this compendium were carefully selected to bring the reader up to date on successful demonstrations of autonomous vehicles, ongoing projects, and what the future may hold for this technology. It is divided into three sections: overview, major design and test collaborations, and a sampling of autonomous vehicle research projects. The comprehensive overview paper covers the current state of autonomous vehicle research and development as well as obstacles to overcome and a possible roadmap for major new technology developments and collaborative relationships. The section on major design and test collaborations covers Sartre, DARPA contests, and the USDOT and the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership-Vehicle Safety Communications (CAMP-VSC2) Consortium. The final section presents seven SAE papers on significant recent and ongoing research by individual companies on a variety of approaches to autonomous vehicles. This book will be of interest to a wide range of readers: engineers at automakers and electronic component suppliers; software engineers; computer systems analysts and architects; academics and researchers within the electronics, computing, and automotive industries; legislators, managers, and other decision-makers in the government highway sector; traffic safety professionals; and insurance and legal practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though a number of developed countries enjoy a high level of vehicle safety, more than 1.2 million fatalities still occur each year on roadways worldwide. There remains a need to continue improving vehicle and road safety. New technologies in sensors and electronic control units, and the growing knowledge of car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure technologies have led to a fusion of the previously separated areas of accident avoidance (popularly known as active safety) and mitigation of injuries (popularly known as passive safety) into the newer concept of integrated vehicle safety. This new approach represents a further step toward lowering accident rates. This book, written by two of the foremost automotive engineering safety experts, takes a unique and comprehensive approach to describing all areas of vehicle safety: accident avoidance, pre-crash, mitigation of injuries, and post-crash technologies, providing a solutions-based perspective of integrated vehicle safety. Also covered are accident investigation and worldwide legislation as they apply to integrated vehicle safety. The man-machine interface, biomechanics and development and simulation techniques are also key concepts that are thoroughly described. Special attention is given to driver assistance systems and to compatibility in car-to-car crashes and pedestrian protection. Chapters cover: accident research, functions of integrated safety, biomechanics and protection criteria, injury mitigation, adaptive occupant protection, compatibility, calculation and simulation, and the future. The book is useful for those interested in any aspect of automotive safety. Engineers and scientists from the automotive industry can learn new details as well as the broad perspective of vehicle safety today. The book also provides key information to traffic safety professionals, law enforcement, insurance practitioners, and journalists. Those who help shape traffic and vehicle legislation can gain a wider understanding of the topic to help them craft better laws. The book also serves as a valuable learning resource for academicians and students.

Book excerpt: This work is part of a multiyear program to foster the development, evaluation, and deployment of forward crash avoidance systems. The work performed during the first two years of this program addressed adaptive cruise control and warnings based upon the motion and proximity of preceding vehicles in the path of travel. The research work done in the first and second years has provided a foundation for the work performed in this third year. The technology-related work for the third year was focused upon the addition of braking to an UMRI prototype of an ACC system. The objective of this work is to provide test results and system-development experience showing the engineering and human factors issues posed by braking as a supplement to ACC or within a medium-deceleration crash avoidance function. The results indicated that the acceleration level used in increasing the speed of the ACC vehicle was not satisfactory in the opinion of most of the test drivers. Drivers did not want to slow down too much because they were concerned with how long it would take to get back up to the desired speed and headway time gap. They indicated that the resume rate of the system was the system's weakness. With regard to the buzzer that was used to warn the driver when the system was asking for the maximum deceleration authority, there were some drivers who did not like buzzers in general and some drivers who thought the features of this buzzer could be improved. The ratings concerning the deceleration level, the following control, and the system's smoothness were quite good. It is recommended that a simple rule for modulating the throttle should be used to achieve the basic ACC functionality. Braking should be applied in a progressively increasing manner, and it should be used to adjust vehicle deceleration in a way that will lead to headway time and distance gaps such that throttle modulation can control headway. Every effort should be made to improve the forward-acceleration capability of the vehicle when it is under ACC control. The warning system should have a nonaggressive signal to inform the driver when braking at the full-deceleration authority of the ACC system has been reached. Further consideration should be given to adding another, more aggressive, signal to warn the driver when the deceleration needed to barely avoid a crash exceeds the control authority of the ACC system.
