Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the South African Council for Automation and Computation (SACAC) first submitted a bid to host the 8th IFAC Symposium on Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing in Beijing, many obstacles were evident. Most of these were embodied in negative international attitudes to the government of the Republic of South Africa and the apartheid society it supported. However, it is to the credit of the IFAC working group on automation in mining, mineral and metal processing that their application at that time was considered favourably, although not formally accepted. It took a visit to the 10th IFAC World Congress in Sydney and a visible shift in the political scenario to persuade the relevant IFAC committees that South Africa would be suitable for the symposium. A national organising committee was formed under the leadership of SACAC and the South African Institute of Measurement and Control (SAIMC), the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) and the South African Institute for Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM). The combined team set about organising the first major IFAC international symposium in South Africa since 1976. The theme for the Symposium was based on the need to promote technology transfer and papers which addressed this issue were favoured. With over 50% of the authors from other countries, a significant opportunity for technology transfer into South Africa was created, which is in keeping with the overall theme.

Book Synopsis Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing by : J. O'Shea
Download or read book Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing written by J. O'Shea and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automation in Mining, Mineral and Metal Processing covers the proceedings of the Third International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) symposium. The book discusses techniques and methods of automatic control and of system analysis for use in mining, mineral, and metal processing industries. Comprised of 69 chapters, the text presents theories, applications, operations, and maintenance of automation systems in an industrial environment. The topics covered are also relevant in solving various issues in the mining, mineral, and metal processing industries, such as pollution, safety, energy efficiency, human resource, and materials through the implementation of an unmanned system. This book will be of great interest to professionals especially those who are contemplating the use of automated system.
Book Synopsis Lunar Settlements by : Haym Benaroya
Download or read book Lunar Settlements written by Haym Benaroya and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-02-12 with total page 804 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together some of the most recognized and influential researchers and scientists in various space-related disciplines, Lunar Settlements addresses the many issues that surround the permanent human return to the Moon. Numerous international contributors offer their insights into how certain technological, physiological, and psychological challenges must be met to make permanent lunar settlements possible. The book first looks to the past, covering the Apollo and Saturn legacies. In addition, former astronaut and U.S. Senator Harrison H. Schmitt discusses how to maintain deep space exploration and settlement. The book then discusses economic aspects, such as funding for lunar commerce, managing human resources, and commercial transportation logistics. After examining how cultural elements will fit into habitat design, the text explores the physiological, psychological, and ethical impact of living on a lunar settlement. It also describes the planning/technical requirements of lunar habitation, the design of both manned and modular lunar bases, and the protection of lunar habitats against meteoroids. Focusing on lunar soil mechanics, the book concludes with discussions on lunar concrete, terraforming, and using greenhouses for agricultural purposes. Drawing from the lunar experiences of the six Apollo landing missions to the many American and Soviet robotic missions to current space activities and research, this volume summarizes the problems, prospects, and practicality of enduring lunar settlements. It reflects the key disciplines, including engineering, physics, architecture, psychology, biology, and anthropology, that will play significant roles in establishing these settlements.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impressive progress has been made in the field of laser-plasma acceleration in the last decade, with outstanding achievements from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints. Closely exploiting the development of ultra-intense, ultrashort pulse lasers, laser-plasma acceleration has developed rapidly, achieving accelerating gradients of the order of tens of GeV/m, and making the prospect of miniature accelerators a more realistic possibility. This book presents the lectures delivered at the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics and summer school: 'Laser-Plasma Acceleration', held in Varenna, Italy, in June 2011.
Book Synopsis Marine Phenolics by : Herminia Domínguez
Download or read book Marine Phenolics written by Herminia Domínguez and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenolic compounds are an extremely diverse class of ubiquitous secondary metabolites produced by a variety of organisms playing different biological roles. They have numerous types of demonstrated bioactivities, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral, immunomodulator, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and antidiabetic activities. Marine organisms produce a vast collection of unique phenolic structures, some of them not found in terrestrial habitats. Progress in different aspects is rapidly advancing, and this Special Issue will provide updated information and recent studies on marine phenolics. Specially, this issue is focused on their chemical characterization, elucidation of their structures, evaluation of their biological properties and mechanisms of action, efficient extraction and purification technologies, development of value-added applications, as well as formulation of novel products.
