Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Automatic processing of documents with the purpose to scan different documents, recognize them, extract, and process different data items obtained from them could be achieved by top-down and bottom-up approaches. The former processes documents starting from the document class and ends with the pixel representation of the different items that should be extracted. The latter, however, processes documents in a reversed manner. In this thesis, a top-down formal approach for automatic processing of documents and bank cheques is proposed. This approach will view a document as a hierarchy of related items: (a) the background which contains simple or complex scenes that should be eliminated, and (b) the foreground which contains (i) base lines that must be removed and (ii) handwritten data, such as the date, the legal amount, and the courtesy amount, that should be extracted with minimum distortion. The novelty of this new approach is to eliminate the background, first, by introducing a new recursive dynamic thresholding technique that could be used globally or locally on a given cheque image. As a second step, base lines that intersect the handwritten data are recognized and removed with the challenge of minimizing the distortion on the extracted items. Two methods are proposed to tackle this difficulty. The first method detects the handwritten data that intersects with the base lines that should be eliminated and uses morphological and topological processing to identify and fill the gaps resulting from the elimination of the detected base lines. The second method proposed a new dynamic morphological processing technique which acts as a detector and a preserver of the handwritten data that intersect, with the base lines. The second method highly increased the efficiency of item extraction by more than 80% and enhanced the quality of the extracted items when combined with local processing techniques. In a step to study the reliability of the proposed top-down automatic item extraction system, a quantitative analysis technique is investigated and an experimental study is performed comparing the top-down formal approach with another newly developed bottom-up approach using the same training set of 500 real-life bank cheques and two testing sets of 200 bank cheques obtained from the CENPARMI database. The purpose of the quantitative performance analysis technique is to subject the extracted items of the top-down and the bottom-up approaches to the same item processing system that is able to recognize these corresponding items and provide quantitative results to indicate the reliability of both approaches. The experimental results showed that the reliability of the top-down approach on the training set. first testing set, and second testing set are 89.20%, 87.91%, and 90.10% respectively while those on the bottom-up approach are 91.35%, 91.30%, and 93.10%, respectively. Finally, in a step towards the construction of a highly reliable system, a feasibility study has been conducted by combining both approaches. The result is quite encouraging and a reliability of 97.09% has been achieved when these two systems are combined.

They become more agile by adopting smarter work practices and transforming their business processes to be more dynamic, collaborative, and connected. Often, the business processes themselves create competitive advantage. Increased revenue at reduced cost makes more money for a very effective business. Changing market opportunities, customer demands, new technology and calls for cost reduction can make it seem impossible to keep operational chaos at bay. Competitive advantage is gained when companies reduce operational risk by making sure that internal guidelines and external regulatory requirements are fulfilled. Companies thus offer customers a faster, more accurate and consistent service. To position your organization for success, you need the ability to continually optimize, streamline and align business processes to meet changing business needs for greater performance, competitive advantage and to drive growth. The companies whose award-winning case studies are featured in this book have proven excellence in their creative and successful deployment of advanced and business process management concepts. The positive impact to their corporations includes increased revenues, more productive and satisfied employees, product enhancements, better customer service and quality improvements.

Book excerpt: The book focuses on one of the key issues in document image processing – graphical symbol recognition, which is a sub-field of the larger research domain of pattern recognition. It covers several approaches: statistical, structural and syntactic, and discusses their merits and demerits considering the context. Through comprehensive experiments, it also explores whether these approaches can be combined. The book presents research problems, state-of-the-art methods that convey basic steps as well as prominent techniques, evaluation metrics and protocols, and research standpoints/directions that are associated with it. However, it is not limited to straightforward isolated graphics (visual patterns) recognition; it also addresses complex and composite graphical symbols recognition, which is motivated by real-world industrial problems.

New theories have been developed with new technology and systems designs in both hardware and software. They are widely applied to our daily life to solve real problems in diverse areas such as science, engineering, agriculture, e-commerce, education, robotics, government, medicine, games and animation, medical imaging analysis and diagnosis, military, and national security. The foundation of this field can be traced back to the late Prof. King-Sun Fu, one of the founding fathers of pattern recognition, who, with visionary insight, founded the International Association for Pattern Recognition in 1978. Almost 30 years later, the world has witnessed this field's rapid growth and development. It is probably true to say that most people are affected by or use applications of pattern recognition in daily life. Today, on the eve of 25th anniversary of the unfortunate and untimely passing of Prof. Fu, we are proud to produce this collection works from world renowned professionals and experts in pattern recognition and machine vision in honor and memory of the late Prof. King-Sun Fu. We hope this book will help further promote not only fundamental principles, systems, and technologies but also the vast range of applications that help in solving problems in daily life.

Recent trends in information identification have identified huge scope in applying machine learning techniques for gaining meaningful insights. Random growth of unstructured data poses new research challenges to handle this huge source of information. Efficient designing of machine learning techniques is the need of the hour. Recent literature in machine learning has emphasized on single technique of information identification. Huge scope exists in developing hybrid machine learning models with reduced computational complexity for enhanced accuracy of information identification. This book will focus on techniques to reduce feature dimension for designing light weight techniques for real time identification and decision fusion. Key Findings of the book will be the use of machine learning in daily lives and the applications of it to improve livelihood. However, it will not be able to cover the entire domain in machine learning in its limited scope. This book is going to benefit the research scholars, entrepreneurs and interdisciplinary approaches to find new ways of applications in machine learning and thus will have novel research contributions. The lightweight techniques can be well used in real time which will add value to practice.

Book excerpt: It is with greatpleasure that we present the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2009), which was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. ISVC o?ers a common umbrella for the four main areas of visual c- puting includingvision, graphics, visualization, andvirtualreality.Thegoalisto provide a forum for researchers, scientists, engineers, and practitioners throu- out the world to present their latest research ?ndings, ideas, developments, and applications in the broader area of visual computing. This year, the program consisted of 16 oral sessions, one poster session, 7 special tracks, and 6 keynote presentations. Also, this year ISVC hosted the Third Semantic Robot Vision Challenge. The responseto the call for papers was verygood;wereceivedover320submissionsfor themainsymposiumfromwhich we accepted 97 papers for oral presentation and 63 papers for poster presen- tion. Special track papers were solicited separately through the Organizing and Program Committees of each track. A total of 40 papers were accepted for oral presentation and 15 papers for poster presentation in the special tracks. All papers were reviewed with an emphasis on potential to contribute to the state of the art in the ?eld. Selection criteria included accuracy and originality of ideas, clarity and signi?cance of results, and presentation quality. The review process was quite rigorous, involving two to three independent blind reviews followed by several days of discussion. During the discussion period we tried to correct anomalies and errors that might have existed in the initial reviews.
