When I refused both that stereotype and the marital surname, I became curious about other women's decisions. I made a politically-grounded documentary promoting individual power and shared it via old and new media. The seventeen-minute documentary Yok Anas?n?n Soyad? (Mrs. His Name, 2012), a form of self-narrative that places the self within a social context, had an impact on the community and created a collaborative meaning. My filmmaking experience spread the seeds, gave birth to this book, created a researcher-me, in this case-and as such, 'theory in practice' and 'practice in theory' go hand-in-hand.Women in Turkey are legally required to change their surnames when they marry and divorce. If they want to continue using their ex-husband's surname after the divorce, they must seek permission from both him and the state. Has this unfair policy affected women financially? Has the forced surname change been a barrier for women's careers? What about the protection of equal legal, social and economic rights?Autoethnographic researchers analyse their subjectivity and life experiences, in which they treat the self as 'other'. This examination of social-cultural structures also calls attention to the issues of power. The interdisciplinary nature of this enquiry highlights the crucial human rights debate of the link between surnames and identity, and also focuses on the feminist maxim 'the personal is political'. In short, the private inevitably became public in a process that bridged the autobiographical, personal, cultural, social and political. I believe that eventually-through this process-my story became (y)ours.

Book excerpt: We are currently experiencing one of the most significant transformations in human history of which the tumultuous scope compels us to reconstruct our perceptions of almost everything 0́3 not the least of which is education. One of the most obvious reasons for this is that technology and the internet is providing instant access to an unimaginable abundance of knowledge and skills to which anyone can contribute without validation. Although this technology places extensive freedom and power in the hands of every individual, it creates a multitude of incompatible differences of interpretations of the world. This supercomplexity renders the future not only much less predictable than ever before, but also fundamentally unknowable. Despite the consequent disparate human condition of uncertainty it generates, our current dominating education practices insist that our refuge remains in acquiring existing knowledge and skills of past worlds rather than accessing a much more reliable source from which possible prosperous future worlds can be created. This study is a qualitative autoethnographic exploration of my life experiences from which I constructed my living theory of being a student in the 21st century. Since being a student is always future directed, my autoethnography could not escape the inevitability of contemplating how I am being prepared for what the future holds. The impetus came primarily from the increasing futility of existing knowledge and skills being the focus of education in the 21st century which can be transmitted, accessed and manipulated by sophisticated artificial intelligence technologies. The fundamental question to answer within this context where students learn what technology can already do is: How will being a student in the 21st century add value to what technology can already achieve? The answer to this question cannot be found in the difference in what humans can do and computers cannot because, ultimately, we simply do not know. This study reveals a radically different and qualitatively efficient shift in what it means to be a student in the 21st century: it is found not in what we know (epistemology) or can do (skills) but fundamentally in who we are (ontologically) through pursuing our human authenticity.

This entry adopts a broad view of autoethnography, with attention to different approaches and applications of this term. Although its first uses appeared in mid-20th-century writings, the concept of autoethnography has been increasingly invoked in a variety of social science and humanities disciplines since the 1990s. The history of the uses of this term is traced from its original uses in the context of anthropological research among non-Western and small-scale societies, when it referred to the ethnographic perspectives on their own cultures by those studied by anthropologists, to more recent approaches that interrogate the researcher's own life experiences (in and out of the field). For some who use the term, it is primarily about forms of self-ethnography, but for others, it is about ethnographic reflections upon one's own group. Emphasis can be placed, therefore, more on the self or the social. Autoethnography raises questions about the insider/outsider dichotomy and the construction of the objective observer. Various genres of autoethnographic writing are discussed as well as its applications in illness and migration narratives. The entry ends with attention to critiques, ethical concerns, and emerging areas for further applications.
