Book excerpt: Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie Andrew Carnegie - This posthumously published autobiography of Andrew Carnegie is a very well written and interesting accounts of the life of one of the wealthiest self-made men in American history. The industrialist and philanthropist lived his life according the following dictum: spend the first third of your life getting all the education you can; spend the next third making all the money you can; and spend the last third giving it all away for worthwhile causes. Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was a Scottish-American philanthropist and industrialist, who made his fortune expanding the American steel industry. Born in Fife (Scotland), his family was poor and they emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1948, in hope of finding better fortune there. He started working for the railroads at an early age, earning his way up, before leaving that industry to focus on the steel industry after the Civil War. Carnegie was also an author and while he is mostly remembered for his posthumously published autobiography, he contributed to many periodicals, discussing labour issues, and published works such "The Gospel of Wealth" (1889) and "The Empire of Business" (1902).

Many times he made the attempt to continue writing, but found it useless. Until then he had lived the life of a man in middle life and a young one at that golfing, fishing, swimming each day, sometimes doing all three in one day. Optimist as he always was and tried to be, even in the face of the failure of his hopes, the world disaster was too much. His heart was broken. A severe attack of in uenza followed by two serious attacks of pneumonia precipitated old age upon him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Andrew Carnegie His little book is the outgrowth of a series of articles which appeared in The Christian W ork of New York. They attracted so much favorable comment that it seemed wise to expand them and put them into permanent form. They cover, in part, a phase of Mr. Carnegie's activities that is not so widely known as are his beneficences, and were revealed only to his friends. Mr. Car negie's Autobiography has appeared just as this book goes to press. It is a rather striking fact 'that the Recollections dwell hardly at all upon the incidents recorded in the Autobiography, but supplement it in a way that I am sure will make all, interested in Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Carnegie's commitment to ensuring and promoting the welfare of his fellow human beings through philanthropic deeds ranged from donations to universities and museums to establishing more than 2,500 public libraries in the English-speaking world, and he gave away more than $350 million toward those efforts during his lifetime. Book excerpt: The Classic Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie - Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist, business magnate, and philanthropist. This brilliant Scottish-American businessman led the expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. Carnegie is one of the richest people in history. - "The great question now was, what could be found for me to do. I had just completed my thirteenth year, and I fairly panted to get to work that I might help the family to a start in the new land. The prospect of want had become to me a frightful nightmare. My thoughts at this period centered in the determination that we should make and save enough of money to produce three hundred dollars a year-twenty-five dollars monthly, which I figured was the sum required to keep us without being dependent upon others. Every necessary thing was very cheap in those days." - "And that is how in 1850 I got my first real start in life. From the dark cellar running a steam-engine at two dollars a week, begrimed with coal dirt, without a trace of the elevating influences of life, I was lifted into paradise, yes, heaven, as it seemed to me, with newspapers, pens, pencils, and sunshine about me. There was scarcely a minute in which I could not learn something or find out how much there was to learn and how little I knew. I felt that my foot was upon the ladder and that I was bound to climb. I had only one fear, and that was that I could not learn quickly enough ..."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andrew Carnegie: The Man and His Work Wealth, said Gladstone, is the business of the world; and when he added, the enormous power which it possesses has been used on the whole well, we cannot doubt that he had in his mind this great millionaire for whom be frequently expressed a warm regard, and whose Gospel of Wealth he reviewed in the glowing terms which are quoted in these pages. Book excerpt: A book of this kind, written years ago by my friend, Judge Mellon, of Pittsburgh, gave me so much pleasure that I am inclined to agree with the wise one whose opinion I have given above; for, certainly, the story which the Judge told has proved a source of infinite satisfaction to his friends, and must continue to influence succeeding generations of his family to live life well. And not only this; to some beyond his immediate circle it holds rank with their favorite authors. The book contains one essential feature of value--it reveals the man. It was written without any intention of attracting public notice, being designed only for his family. In like manner I intend to tell my story, not as one posturing before the public, but as in the midst of my own people and friends, tried and true, to whom I can speak with the utmost freedom, feeling that even trifling incidents may not be wholly destitute of interest for them.

A reader learns a lot about Carnegie's childhood, first work, and then first business undertakings, which led him to the position of one of the richest men in the world. The second part of the book "The Gospel of Wealth" is Carnegie's on how the rich should improve society by sharing money for the common good. There he supported the idea of progressive taxation and estate tax and set a fashion for philanthropy. _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Andrew Carnegie: An Anniversary Address Delivered Before the Carnegie Institute of Technology, on November the 24th, 1915 The Librarian and the Vice-Librarians of the Cleveland Public Library send cordial greetings to their associates in the Library and in the Western Reserve Library School, Christmas, 1915. It is peculiarly fitting that Mr. Carnegie should be honored in the Cleveland Public Library, which owes to his generosity its system of branch libraries, and in the Western Reserve Library School, which is his foundation. This address was delivered on November 24, 1915, at a meeting in honor of the eightieth birthday of Mr. Carnegie and the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh. It is printed by the kind permission of Dr. Pritchett. The portrait is from a painting by Howard Russell Butler, N.A., in the possession of the Cleveland Public Library; cover-inset represents the entrance to the Carnegie South Branch of the Cleveland Public Library. Book excerpt: Much more than a book of sage business advice-though it is that, too-this extraordinary autobiography of one of the greatest American success stories is the tale of the nation's entrepreneurial spirit itself. The man who made a fortune in steel relates, in a lively and at times even poetic voice, the story of his life, from the vital lessons he learned from his "poor but honest" family about the value of hard work and a generous, liberal philosophy and his early work in telegraph and railroad offices to his investments in oil and steel and the great pleasure he took in his philanthropic causes, including setting up pensions for his steelworkers. Published in 1920, just after his death, and written as if to family and friends, this is an important reminder that there was a time in American business when a multimillion-dollar deal could be conducted on a handshake and greed wasn't good. Entrepreneur and philanthropist ANDREW CARNEGIE (1835-1919) was born in Scotland and emigrated to America as a teenager. His Carnegie Steel Company launched the steel industry in Pittsburgh, and after its sale to J.P. Morgan, he devoted his life to philanthropic causes. His charitable organizations built more than 2,500 public libraries around the world, and gave away more than $350 million during his lifetime.

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller! “Beautifully crafted and fun to read.” —Louis Galambos, The Wall Street Journal “Nasaw’s research is extraordinary.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Make no mistake: David Nasaw has produced the most thorough, accurate and authoritative biography of Carnegie to date.” —Salon.com The definitive account of the life of Andrew Carnegie Celebrated historian David Nasaw, whom The New York Times Book Review has called "a meticulous researcher and a cool analyst," brings new life to the story of one of America's most famous and successful businessmen and philanthropists—in what will prove to be the biography of the season. Born of modest origins in Scotland in 1835, Andrew Carnegie is best known as the founder of Carnegie Steel. His rags to riches story has never been told as dramatically and vividly as in Nasaw's new biography. Carnegie, the son of an impoverished linen weaver, moved to Pittsburgh at the age of thirteen. The embodiment of the American dream, he pulled himself up from bobbin boy in a cotton factory to become the richest man in the world. He spent the rest of his life giving away the fortune he had accumulated and crusading for international peace. For all that he accomplished and came to represent to the American public—a wildly successful businessman and capitalist, a self-educated writer, peace activist, philanthropist, man of letters, lover of culture, and unabashed enthusiast for American democracy and capitalism—Carnegie has remained, to this day, an enigma. Nasaw explains how Carnegie made his early fortune and what prompted him to give it all away, how he was drawn into the campaign first against American involvement in the Spanish-American War and then for international peace, and how he used his friendships with presidents and prime ministers to try to pull the world back from the brink of disaster. With a trove of new material—unpublished chapters of Carnegie's Autobiography; personal letters between Carnegie and his future wife, Louise, and other family members; his prenuptial agreement; diaries of family and close friends; his applications for citizenship; his extensive correspondence with Henry Clay Frick; and dozens of private letters to and from presidents Grant, Cleveland, McKinley, Roosevelt, and British prime ministers Gladstone and Balfour, as well as friends Herbert Spencer, Matthew Arnold, and Mark Twain—Nasaw brilliantly plumbs the core of this facinating and complex man, deftly placing his life in cultural and political context as only a master storyteller can.
