Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is written for the student who would like to move more deeply into the darkness of the fourth gospel in search of light. It offers an introductory survey of the contemporary critical efforts to solve some of the problems of the fourth gospel. To shift the analogy away from our mountain cave, this book endeavors to provide a road map through the terrain of recent johannine scholarship, for much of that terrain is uncharted. The survey is intended for the person who has had an introduction to the fourth gospel and wants to inform him or herself more fully with regard to the critical opinions currently held about it. The book is not an introduction to the gospel, because the introductory matters usually handled in the beginning pages of a commentary, for instance, are taken for granted. So, while some critical orientation to the gospel is required, the survey does not presuppose advanced knowledge of the gospel and its problems. It is hoped, therefore, that a wide range of persons curious about the state of current critical studies o fthe gospel will find the following pages helpful." --
Book Synopsis The Fourth Gospel: Rediscovering Traditional Authorship and Its Implications for Critical Scholarship by : Kelly Seely
Download or read book The Fourth Gospel: Rediscovering Traditional Authorship and Its Implications for Critical Scholarship written by Kelly Seely and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern commentaries and scholars often discount the authorship of the Fourth Gospel completely as if no good evidence exists for the Apostle John, son of Zebedee, its traditional author. One prominent scholar even suggested that the Apostle John was illiterate. He cited Acts 4:13 as evidence for his argument. This short piece examines this an other authorship claims. For at least 1,700 years, the vast majority of churches around the world have held to traditional authorship. While modern scholarship has all but abandoned even the idea of John, son of Zebedee, as the Fourth Gospel's author, Christians for 1,700 years were not void of evidence, by which they backed their claims/assumptions. Can a true scholar hold to traditional authorship while remaining academic? Today, a need exists to revisit the facts of the traditional authorship of the Fourth Gospel. Kelly Seely examines a variety of internal and external evidence seeking to answer this question.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Authorship of the Fourth Gospel: External Evidences In regard to this collateral question, then, I conceive that decided progress has been made in a direction favorable to the possibility (to put it mildly) of the Johannean authorship of the Fourth Gospel. We do not know anything concern ing the theological position of the Apostle John, which justi fies us in assuming that twenty years after the destruction of Jerusalem he could not have written such a work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: 3.8, course: BIBLICAL STUDIES AND THEOLOGY, language: English, abstract: Recent scholarship has called into question the belief that Apostle John is the author of the Gospel attributed to him. It is instructive that this Gospel does not identify its author as John. Meanwhile, questions surrounding the authorship of the Fourth Gospel which critical scholars of generations past thought were settled have recently gained keen attention of scholars in the recent time. In view of this, there is an increasing tendency by critics to abandon earlier conclusions and traditions that the writer utilized synoptic materials and that the book was sub-apostolic in date designed for Greek-thinking people and that John's theology reflects a long period of development. However, this research calls attention to re-entrench past and current trends in regards to the issue at hand as well as analyze the varying reasons for different opinions in other to establish a viable stance. Recent observations have shown that regular many Christians have their favourite scripture quotations of the New Testament in the Gospel of John. John's Gospel is well known and oft-quoted texts as: "God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life", "Jesus wept" among others. Far beyond these observations, the cardinality of this book to the whole Canon of the New Testament cannot be discarded.
