Book Synopsis Australia's Trade Policies by : Richard W. T. Pomfret
Download or read book Australia's Trade Policies written by Richard W. T. Pomfret and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's Trade Policies analyses the evolution and current content of these policies. A historical chapter explains why Australia adopted a policy of protecting manufacturing activities from import competition, and why this strategy was retained after other high-income countries reduced their trade barriers during the 1950s and 1960s. Australia began to change policy in 1973, but embarked on substantial trade liberalisation only in the 1980s. The book analyses the costs of protection and the political economy of policy reform. Individual chapters focus on primary industries, the manufacturing sector and trade in services. Going beyond the normal limits of trade theory. Chapters also deal with capital flows (and multinational enterprises) and the relationship between trade liberalisation and macroeconomic policy.

Book Synopsis Australia and the Global Trade System by : Ann Capling
Download or read book Australia and the Global Trade System written by Ann Capling and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-02 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia and the Global Trade System provides a comprehensive account of Australia's role in developing and maintaining the multilateral trade system from its origins in 1947 to the present day. Australia was one of the 23 original signatories to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), and its participation was vital to the success of international efforts to reconstruct a multilateral trade system after the disastrous experiences of the 1930s. Since then, Australia has wielded far more influence in the GATT, and its successor, the World Trade Organization (WTO). This 2001 book, based on archival sources and oral interviews, makes a significant contribution to our understanding of Australia's trade policies, its commercial diplomacy, and its role and position in the global political economy. It provides a perspective on debates about the capacity of small nations to be agents as well as subjects of history.

This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 1544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protectionism has been placed under the media spotlight, with news headlines generated by populist anti-globalization movements and Donald Trump's term as US President. Such a policy stance is putting at risk unilateral trade reform efforts in the Asia-Pacific region and elsewhere. This two-volume reference work provides a timely update on how far the region has come in opening markets. It analyzes the motivations or ostensible objectives of policies adopted in the past, the changing extent of the domestic price distortions involved, the economic effects of those policies at home and abroad, the political economy forces at work that brought about those policies and their subsequent reform, their consequences for international trade, economic welfare and poverty alleviation, and prospects for sustainable improvements in current policies. Case studies of major East Asian economies and Australia reveal how government priorities to assist farmers versus manufacturers changed over the past century but especially since the 1980s, and how that has affected trade between natural resource-poor and resource-rich economies. This set is highly recommended for those who are interested in the economics and politics of trade policies, agricultural economics, economic development, and food and nutrition security in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
Book Synopsis A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis by : Marc Bacchetta
Download or read book A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis written by Marc Bacchetta and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade flows and trade policies need to be properly quantified to describe, compare, or follow the evolution of policies between sectors or countries or over time. This is essential to ensure that policy choices are made with an appropriate knowledge of the real conditions. This practical guide introduces the main techniques of trade and trade policy data analysis. It shows how to develop the main indexes used to analyze trade flows, tariff structures, and non-tariff measures. It presents the databases needed to construct these indexes as well as the challenges faced in collecting and processing these data, such as measurement errors or aggregation bias. Written by experts with practical experience in the field, A Practical Guide to Trade Policy Analysis has been developed to contribute to enhance developing countries' capacity to analyze and implement trade policy. It offers a hands-on introduction on how to estimate the distributional effects of trade policies on welfare, in particular on inequality and poverty. The guide is aimed at government experts engaged in trade negotiations, as well as students and researchers involved in trade-related study or research. An accompanying DVD contains data sets and program command files required for the exercises. Copublished by the WTO and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development

Book Synopsis Australian Trade Policy in the Twenty-First Century by : Richard Pomfret
Download or read book Australian Trade Policy in the Twenty-First Century written by Richard Pomfret and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s and 1990s, Australia moved from a protectionist trade policy to very open trade policies. This paper analyses the evolution of these policies in the twenty-first century: first signing bilateral agreements in the 2000s and then participating in negotiation of mega-regional agreements (TPP/CPTPP and RCEP). To some extent these shifts have reflected stasis in the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and its inability to make agreements on new areas. Underlying drivers of Australia's beyond-WTO trade agreements have been the fragmentation of trade along global value chains and the emergence of new trade technologies associated with the spread of the internet.
