Download or read book Australian Social Attitudes IV written by Clive Bean and published by Sydney University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, democracies have seen a decline in social and political trust. Australian Social Attitudes IV: The Age of Insecurity is an in-depth look at the economic and geopolitical uncertainty that pervades Australian public discourse. In the decade following the Howard administration, Australian politics has been defined by growing uncertainty, instability, and the emergence of popular disaffection with the political class, similar to what has been seen in the United States and Britain. Featuring contributions from Australia’s leading social scientists, this book explores the connection between insecurities and disaffection, and the ways in which they have manifested – in populist voting patterns, suspicions about climate science, and hostilities to immigration. A fascinating insight into what Australians think about contemporary political and social issues, this book is designed to present the public, media, and policymakers with up-to-date analysis of public opinion about important topics confronting Australian politics and society.

Book Synopsis Australian Public Opinion, Defence and Foreign Policy by : Danielle Chubb
Download or read book Australian Public Opinion, Defence and Foreign Policy written by Danielle Chubb and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of Australian public opinion towards defence and foreign policy from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. For most of this period, the public showed little interest in defence and security policy and possessed limited knowledge about the strategic options available. The principal post-war exception to this pattern is, of course, the Vietnam War, when political divisions over Australia’s support for the U.S.-led action eventually resulted in the withdrawal of troops in 1972. The period since 2001 has seen a fundamental change both in the public’s views of defence and foreign affairs, and in how these issues are debated by political elites. This has come about as a result of major changes in the strategic environment such as a heightened public awareness of terrorism, party political divisions over Australia’s military commitment to the 2003-11 Iraq War and the increasing overlap of economic and trade considerations with defence and foreign policies, which has increased the public’s interest in these issues. Combining the expertise of one of Australia's foremost scholars of public opinion with that of an expert of international relations, particularly as pertains to Australia in Asia, this book will be a critical read for those wishing to understand Australia's alliance with the U.S., interactions with Asia and China, and the distinctive challenges posed to Australia by its geographic position.

Download or read book From Girls to Men - Social Attitudes to Gender Equality in Australia. Part 1, Quantitative Findings written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender equality progress in Australia, as in many other liberal nations, has stalled in the face of a backlash. This report explores this further with a national survey of community attitudes to gender equality and empowerment. 2,122 people, aged from 16 onwards, were surveyed regarding whether gender policy should be a priority, whether inequality and sexism are still problems, whether workplace equality policies discriminate against men, career opportunities, political correctness, the exclusion of men, and who should be responsible for addressing sexism. The report highlights the major trends identified, and considers differences by gender, age generation, and time spent online either gaming or in social media. The report concludes with some preliminary thoughts on the key policy questions and further research. Sections include: Is inequality between women and men still a problem in Australia today?; The rhetoric-reality gap: unpacking Australian attitudes on gender equality; How do Australians understand sexism?; In which areas of Australian society is sexism most prevalent?; Have men been forgotten in the struggle for gender equality?; Are male moderates misogynists or critical thinkers?; Male millennial traditionalists and the gaming culture; and Regional Australia leads the way on positive attitudes to gender equality. Worrying, despite high levels of knowledge about the nature of gender inequality, a growing number of Millennial and Gen X men appear to be alienated from the process of change and are backsliding into traditional value systems.
Book Synopsis Attitudes to Homelessness in Australia by : Deb Batterham
Download or read book Attitudes to Homelessness in Australia written by Deb Batterham and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been very little research to date investigating attitudes to homelessness in Australia.Such research is important as public opinion can influence both political will to act and theviability of different policy responses. Attitudes also shape the way the community responds to those who are disadvantaged. Using data collected through the 2007 Australian Survey of Social Attitudes on homelessness, this study investigated attitudes of the Australian community about the perceived causes of homelessness and responsibility for addressing it. Exploratory principal component analysis revealed an underlying structure to participants' responses. Three components or response patterns emerged, with participants viewing homelessness as a problem: with external causes requiring government solutions; of collective responsibility; with individual causes, where individuals and their families are responsible for resolution. This finding is consistent with some studies from the United States and United Kingdom that show that attitudes to homelessness are complex and do not necessarily align with the structural/individual dichotomy in a straightforward way. Demographic factors such as age, sex, class, educational attainment and political affiliation were explored as predictors of attitudes. While some significant relationships were found, multiple regression analysis revealed that these factors explained very little of the overall variance in attitudes to homelessness. This has implications for public opinion research on homelessness, which has focused largely on demographic attributes as predictors of attitudes.
