Book Synopsis Among Australia's Pioneers by : Margaret Slocomb
Download or read book Among Australia's Pioneers written by Margaret Slocomb and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The almost simultaneous abolition of the slave trade and the cessation of convict transportation to the colony of New South Wales'now eastern mainland Australia'started a quest by the squatter pastoralists for alternative sources of cheap labor for their vast sheep runs. Over a period of five years, beginning from 1848, around three thousand Chinese men and boys from Fujian Province were recruited under conditions little different from the slave trade. In Among Australia's Pioneers, author Margaret Slocomb focuses on the experiences of approximately two hundred of these Chinese laborers between 1848 and 1853. Her research examines their working conditions during the five-year indenture period and also traces the lives of several of the men who, at the end of their contract, chose to remain in those districts, which, by then, had become familiar to them. Perhaps they regarded themselves as pioneer immigrants. Slocomb recounts the experiences of these men on the dangerous northern frontier of European settlement. While some succumbed to the despair and loneliness of a shepherd's life, others survived their indenture and went on to play an important role in the emerging society of the new colony of Queensland. They may certainly be counted among the nation's pioneers.

Book Synopsis The Biggest Ever Gold-mining Swindle in the Colonies by : John Peach

This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Philps, later a Minister for Mines and a Queensland Premier, called it "the biggest ever mining swindle in the Colonies". He for one certainly knew, because Robert Ross himself sold Philps a swag of the Company shares in early 1888. This is the true story of multiple gold frauds by Robert Ross near Yeppoon Queensland, and a dubious Sydney Company involving many leading identities now well known in our history. Some made fortunes almost overnight and some ended up mortally wounded. The Supreme Court sessions featured most of the leading 'silks' in the Colony and even our later first Prime Minister Edmund Barton and all the sworn evidence and verdicts were meticulously recorded and then first sealed under Statute for 30 years.

This book was released on 1991 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the same time that international political, economic and power shifts have forced Australia to look inwards to itself rather than outwards to others for solutions and decisions, the Australian people themselves have begun to re-write their history in their own terms and to ponder seriously their future role in the world. Wales and Australia: A Symposium is the first symposium organized by the Centre for Australian Studies in Wales at St David's University College. Four of the papers included in this book were presented by people based in Wales, two by Australians. All papers, ranging through migration, historiography, broadcasting and mining, sought to establish historical and cultural connections between Wales and Australia. The papers presented have been enlarged and edited for publication in this form.
Book Synopsis Hauling the Loads by : Malcolm J. Kennedy
Download or read book Hauling the Loads written by Malcolm J. Kennedy and published by Melbourne University. This book was released on 1992 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bullocky, cursing at his team; twenty or more horses harnessed to a towering load of wool bales or wheat bags, inching their way along a dusty track: these are central, enduring images of Australia's past, immortalized by Lawson, Paterson and Furphy. Malcolm Kennedy is the first, however, to explore the essential part that beast of burden actually played in Australia's development. From the arrival of the first horses and cattle with the First Fleet, Kennedy gives a remarkable picture of Australian life. He reveals how the horse was the secret weapon used against the Aborigines. He describes the growth of that uniquely Australian livelihood -- droving. He even investigates the pollution problems of horse-powered cities: what do do you do with over 200 tons of manure every day? With exemplary and painstaking research, Malcolm Kennedy has produced a record of part of our history that is now lost.
