Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People comprise the backbone of any military force. But what happens when the stress of operations becomes overwhelming and those people fail to cope? Stress can have negative consequences for the individual, the organisation, and even for overall combat effectiveness. The Australian Defence Force has spent many years researching how to maximise individual resilience and performance in the face of extreme stress. For the first time this wealth of knowledge and experience has been brought together in one volume. This work examines the impact of highly stressful events, such as combat and peacekeeping operations, on individual troops and leaders, with a particular focus on factors that build resilience and maximise performance under stress. Managing stress is an important issue not only for the military, but equally for other high-risk professions such as the police and emergency services. This work provides a unique synthesis of a wide range of research, and clinical and personal experience, providing a coherent, integrated approach to the subject. Of particular use to mental health professionals, it will also be of interest to general readers of military and psychology books.

Download or read book Australia's Defence written by Peter Dean and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost half a century ago, the Australian National University's TB Millar penned a seminal book on Australian defence policy in the lead up to the Vietnam War. Today, Australia's defence forces are returning from long conflicts overseas, while the rise of China and the economic integration in the Indo-Pacific presents a complex mix of challenges and opportunities. Drawing inspiration from Millar's original volume, Australia's Defence: Towards a New Era? brings together leading experts to examine the domestic and international context of Australia's defence policy, Australian strategy and the size and state of our armed forces. As the country heads towards a new era, this book provides an in-depth overview and key insights into the past, present and future of Australia's defence.

Book Synopsis Australian Public Opinion, Defence and Foreign Policy by : Danielle Chubb
Download or read book Australian Public Opinion, Defence and Foreign Policy written by Danielle Chubb and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of Australian public opinion towards defence and foreign policy from the mid-twentieth century to the present day. For most of this period, the public showed little interest in defence and security policy and possessed limited knowledge about the strategic options available. The principal post-war exception to this pattern is, of course, the Vietnam War, when political divisions over Australia’s support for the U.S.-led action eventually resulted in the withdrawal of troops in 1972. The period since 2001 has seen a fundamental change both in the public’s views of defence and foreign affairs, and in how these issues are debated by political elites. This has come about as a result of major changes in the strategic environment such as a heightened public awareness of terrorism, party political divisions over Australia’s military commitment to the 2003-11 Iraq War and the increasing overlap of economic and trade considerations with defence and foreign policies, which has increased the public’s interest in these issues. Combining the expertise of one of Australia's foremost scholars of public opinion with that of an expert of international relations, particularly as pertains to Australia in Asia, this book will be a critical read for those wishing to understand Australia's alliance with the U.S., interactions with Asia and China, and the distinctive challenges posed to Australia by its geographic position.
