Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Lawson's poems narrate the rawness of life in the Australian bush between the late 19th and early 20th century, among humble herdsmen, sheep shearers and itinerant labourers, the compassion for the fates of others, the active solidarity, the austerity of the situations in which women and children live at the mercy of an impervious landscape. Lawson portrays them with great empathy and is able to capture the strenuous struggle to survive in a hostile world and the courage to face the unknown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning collection from one of Australia's favourite poets. Readers have long embraced the passionate energy of Henry Lawson's poems. this collection of 177 poems showcases the very best of Lawson - heart-rendering tales of the human condition, rousing poems of social protest, images of comic characters, and classic portraits such as Middleton's rouseabout, as well as some of Lawson's lesser-known works, including the poignant verse addressed to his lost love, Hannah thornburn. Henry Lawson was a man burdened by poverty and deafness and haunted by the specters of alcoholism and madness. Against his tortured life, the spirit, humour and understanding evident in this collection show the breadth of Lawson's achievement and demonstrate why he has endured as one of Australia's great poets. Poems listed in chronological order, with title and first line indices. 'Such pride as a man feels when he has true greatness as his guest, this newspaper feels in introducing to a million readers a man of ability hitherto unknown to them. Henry Lawson is his name.' - New York Evening Journal 'the first articulate voice of the real Australian' - David McKee Wright in the preface to the first edition of Lawson's Selected Poems, 1918 'Any book of Lawson's should be bought and treasured by all who care for the real beginnings of Australian literature.' - the Book Lover Magazine (US)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The death of Henry Lawson marked the close of the period in Australian literature which began with Henry Kendall. While living, Lawson had many imitators, but no peers; with his death we turned a page to which there can be no additions. He belonged to a past of struggle, pain, and triumph, when the country was in the making. Others will use those days to give their work background of colour and romance; but there can be none to walk where he walked, none to see with his eyes... With every decade that appeal must increase; for, reading Lawson, our children's children will hear the living voice of those who laid the foundations of all they prize and love." The 'Poetical Works of Henry Lawson is a collection of poems by the famed nineteenth century Australian writer and poet, known for his prolific descriptions of Australian society in the colonial period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Lawson (1867-1922) was an Australian writer and poet. He is among the best-known Australian poets and fiction writers of the colonial period. Lawson was born in a town on the Grenfell goldfields of New South Wales. He attended school at Eurunderee from 1876 but suffered an ear infection at around this time that left him with partial deafness and by the age of fourteen he had lost his hearing entirely. He later attended a Catholic school at Mudgee, New South Wales. He was a keen reader of Dickens and Marryat and serialised novels such as Robbery Under Arms and For the Term of His Natural Life. Lawson's first published poem was A Song of the Republic which appeared in The Bulletin, 1887. This was followed by The Wreck of the Derry Castle and then Golden Gully. Most of his work focuses on the Australian bush, such as the desolate Past Carin, and is considered by some to be among the first accurate descriptions of Australian life as it was at the time.
