Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers a discovery: for the first time a comprehensive monograph explores the entire oeuvre of photographic artist Jan Groover (1943-2012), whose personal collection was transferred to the Swiss-based Musée de l'Elysée in 2017. Generously illustrated, 'Jan Groover, photographer: laboratory of forms' traces the artist's career from the beginnings in America to her late years in western France. Having started her career as a painter, when she turned to photography in the 1970s she developed a distinct artistic attitude that saw her amalgamate the disciplines of photography and painting. She was especially known for her carefully composed photographic still-lifes. Essays on her life and work, her significance as an artist, alongside a very personal contribution by her husband, French artist and critic Bruce Boice, complement the images."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores one of modernity?s most profound and far-reaching philosophies of art: the Vorlesungen über die Ästhetik, delivered by Georg Friedrich Wilhelm Hegel in the 1820s. The book has two overriding objectives: first, to ask how Hegel?s work illuminates specific periods and artworks in light of contemporary art-historical discussions; second, to explore how art history helps us make better sense and use of Hegelian aesthetics.00In bringing together a range of internationally acclaimed critical voices, the volume establishes an important disciplinary bridge between aesthetics and art history. Given the recent resurgence of interest in ?global? art history, and calls for more comparative approaches to ?visual culture?, contributors ask what role Hegel has played within the field ? and what role he could play in the future. What can a historical treatment of art accomplish? How should we explain the ?need? for certain artistic forms at different historical junctures? Has art history been ?Hegelian? without fully acknowledging it? Indeed, have art historians shirked some of the fundamental questions that Hegel raised?

Book excerpt: A photo-series made up of 65 works which explore how lost and forgotten objects have a tendency to then re-appear in specific places, taking on a life of their own. Backhaus has succeeded in capturing motifs that exude both a sense of the enigmatic and the sublime. The readers gaze is tranfixed as they unravel the mystery of what makes these banal objects hold such intrigue. Reminiscent of still-lifes and yet accidental in their compostion, Backhaus turns the arbitary and organic into palpable frames.

Book excerpt: Fashion and fashion photography reflect the times that produce them; they are snapshots of an era and communicate the attitudes of a generation. The fashion photographer, like the fashion designer, has to anticipate trends, visualize ideas, and do this via images that men and women can identify with, whether consciously or unconsciously. This stunning new compendium of fashion photography (and art photography that documents fashion) contains images made as early as the 1840s and leads all the way up to today. There are society photographs, nudes, conceptual works, abstractions and documentary images. Photographers include Hill and Adamson, Madame d ́Ora, George Hoyningen-Huene, Yva, Regina Relang, Man Ray, Richard Avedon, Guy Bourdin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Annie Leibovitz, Herlinde Koelbl, David LaChapelle, Peter Lindbergh, Wolfgang Tillmans, Merry Alpern, Ralph Gibson, Martin Kippenberger, Irving Penn, Edward Steichen, Cindy Sherman, and many others. Exquisitely printed on deluxe paper, The Heartbeat of Fashion will appeal equally to lovers of fashion and photography, and makes an ideal gift for anyone with impeccable taste and an interest in the history of aesthetics.

The text is designed for students who wish to understand how and why deconstruction has become the dominant tool of the humanities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hegel gave lecture series on aesthetics or the philosophy of art in various university terms, but never published a book of his own on this topic. His student, H. G. Hotho, compiled auditors' transcripts from these separate lecture series and produced from them the three volumes on aesthetics in the standard edition of Hegel's collected works. Annemarie Gethmann-Siefert has now published one of these transcripts, the Hotho transcript of the 1823 lecture series, and accompanied it with a very extensive introductory essay treating many issues pertinent to a proper understanding of Hegel's views on art. She persuasively argues that the evidence shows Hegel never finalized his views on the philosophy of art, but modified them in significant ways from one lecture series to the next. In addition, she makes the case that Hotho's compilation not only concealed this circumstance, by the harmony he created out of diverse source materials, but also imposed some of his own views on aesthetics, views that differ from Hegel's and that the ongoing interpretation of the aesthetics part of Hegel's philosophy has unfortunately taken to be Hegel's own. This translation of the German volume, which contains the first publication of the Hotho transcript and Gethmann-Siefert's essay, makes these important materials accessible to the English reader, materials that should put the English-speaking world's future understanding and interpretation of Hegel's philosophy of art on a sounder footing.
