Who should appear at the Rectory-gate last Wednesday but dear old Dr. Spelman! He took the journey to see the relics of the painted window, which were found in the churchyard. He pronounces them very fine, and says that, with patience and judgment, the fragments may be put together again; and Aunt Elinor and Agatha Dalton have spent the last three mornings in trying to arrange the pieces, under the old antiquary's superintendence. 'the doctor asked to see Aunt Elinor's Lectures, and was so much pleased with them, that he insisted on their being published; and Aunt Elinor has at last consented. She intends devoting the profits to the fund we are trying to raise towards restoring the church; the parish will grant a rate for the necessary repairs, and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aunt Elinor's Lectures on Architecture: Dedicated to the Ladies of England My Dear Austin, I am determined to be the first to announce to you that Aunt Elmor is coming before the world as an authoress! Here is the history of the event. No doubt, you remember my telling you last January that Aunt had been so kind as to draw up some Lectures on Architecture for the children's winter-evening's amusement. Our neighbours at the Hall heard of them, and begged to be present at the readings. I believe the Hall was uncommonly dull just then. The Irbys were at Brighton, the Lortons at Paris, and the only visitors at Elminghurst Hall were that agreeable trio, Messrs. Harbottle, Hubert, and Tantivy. Mr. Dalton used to hunt all day, and sleep on the sofa after dinner, so the girls were glad of an excuse to spend an evening at the Rectory. Book excerpt: John Henry Newman (1801-90) was brought up in the Church of England in the Evangelical tradition. An Oxford graduate and Fellow of Oriel College, he was appointed Vicar of St Mary's Oxford in 1828; from 1839 onwards he began to have doubts about the claims of the Anglican Church and in 1845 he was received into the Roman Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1879. His influence on both the restoration of Roman Catholicism in England and the advance of Catholic ideas in the Church of England was profound. This volume covers a crucially important and significant period in Newman's life. The Church of England bishops' continuing condemnation of Tract 90 - plus Pusey's two-year suspension for preaching a university sermon on the Real Presence - are major factors in Newman resigning as Vicar of St Mary's, Oxford. His doubts about the Church of England are deeper and stronger than ever, and he is moving closer to Rome. William Lockhart's sudden defection to Rome in August 1843 precipitates his resignation. He preaches his final Anglican sermon, 'The Parting of Friends', and retires into lay communion at Littlemore. The first edition of University Sermons, including the celebrated sermon on theological development, virtually sells out within a fortnight.

Book excerpt: This title explores the controversy surrounding the design of the new Foreign Office in London during Britain's Imperial heyday. In 1855 it was decided to build a new block of government offices in London, starting with the Foreign and War Offices. The government offices competition came at what was probably - looking back on it - the zenith of Britain's confidence as a nation and international power. One would expect the mid-Victorians to have felt, firstly, pride in their current national situation; and secondly, the urge to commemorate this in the most important national building to be projected in twenty years. Porter uses the debates surrounding the building of these important new monuments to interrogate the very fabric of British society, culture and nation building. The discussion on so many issues - religion, nationality, empire, history, modernism, truth, morality, gender - quite apart from considerations of 'pure' aesthetics, offers an unusual, perhaps even unique, insight into the relationship between these matters and the 'culture' of the time.
