Most authors ignore the historical environment that the Prussian military operated in during the Franco-Prussian War. This study examines the influence of the Prussian concept of Auftragstaktik on the modern US Army notion of mission command as defined within the published doctrine. It utilizes archival records and pertinent published histories from the August 1870 battles on the Franco-Prussian frontier, Moltke’s 1869 Instructions for Large Unit Commanders, as well as writings from the 1980s to describe the influence of Prussian system on the modern concept of mission command.

Many allied armed forces have tried to introduce Auftragstaktik based on the German experience and adopted it to their specific military cultures. Misinterpretation and misunderstanding, however, very often accompanied this attempt and process, and the intent to use Auftragstaktik very often degenerated to a lip service. Lieutenant Colonel Wittmann identifies a broad variety of definitions of Auftragstaktik in his literature analysis. Since Auftragstaktik lacks from theoretical foundation, he tries to ground it theoretically in an interesting and convincing manner. His work has, undoubtedly, extraordinary relevance to the present and future dimensions of leadership in the multinational structured armed forces of today, but also in areas outside of the military sphere.

There are noticeable cultural barriers that are prohibiting the full adoption of mission command in the US Army. A breathless, decade-long pace of operations superimposed with environmental pressures, constrained budgets and resources, dramatic reductions in force structure and personnel, and major social and technological changes are affecting the organizational culture of the US Army. Auftragstaktik, loosely translated as 'mission tactics' or 'mission orders', came into mainstream military lexicon after World War II to describe a uniquely German decentralized-style of command. The principles of Auftragstaktik have evolved logically and naturally since the conquests of the Prussian warrior-king, Fredrick the Great. Auftragstaktik channeled the aggressive posture and legendary discipline of the Prussian army. As the battlefield grew increasingly dense and complex, the Prussians responded by decentralizing authority and responsibility and allowing greater subordinate freedom of action. They placed heavy emphasis on initiative and empowerment to take full advantage of rapidly changing conditions. Auftragstaktik is not simply a doctrine, but a cultural phenomenon that requires a specific organizational culture. Many of these comments have attributed a large measure of the Germans' tactical success to the concept now referred to as Auftragstaktik (roughly and imperfectly translated as 'task-oriented or mission-oriented tactics'). The implication often made, implicity or explicity, is that the US Army should emulate the German Army by formally adopting a concept akin to that of Auftragstaktik. Whether the US Army should do so is the main issue of this monograph. The effort to address this issue begins with an examination of the nature of Auftragstaktik, as it was practiced by the German Army before 1945. Next, this study seeks to ascertain how applicable Auftragstaktik is to the conditions of the modern battlefield. Then, the paper explores the degree of compatibility between Auftragstaktik and contemporary Army trends and command traditions. An Auftragstaktik-like approach appears profoundly attuned to the needs of modern warfare, and seems sufficiently compatible with Army trends and traditions to take root.
