Book excerpt: This work offers buyers, sellers, and collectors an easy-to-use, one-volume source of information for these bird and quadruped prints of John James Audubon. It contains obscure references, where the author, Bill Steiner, has surveyed the contemporary market-place. Addressing one of the more complex aspects of print collection, the text clarifies the task of distinguishing the octavio prints of the successive editions of Audubon's Birds of America (1840-1871) and Quadrupeds of North America (1849-1870). It describes the publication histories of each edition since the first, offers information about printers, engravers, and subscribers, and provides practical information on price histories, accessibility, and preservation.

Book Synopsis The Birds of America by : John James Audubon
Download or read book The Birds of America written by John James Audubon and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A never-before-published edition of the rare chromolithographic Audubon prints of American birds. John James Audubon is arguably America’s most widely recognized and collected artist. His Birds of America has been reproduced often, beginning with the double elephant folio printed by Havill in England, followed by a much smaller “Octavo” edition printed in Philadelphia and sold by subscription. After Audubon’s death, his family arranged with the New York printer Julius Bien to produce another elephant folio edition, this time by the new chromolithographic process. It too would be sold by subscription, but the venture, begun in 1858, was brought to an abrupt end by the Civil War. Only 150 plates were produced, and the number remaining today is slight; they are among the rarest and most sought after Audubon prints. Bound in cloth with a full cloth slipcase, this beautifully produced book is the first complete reproduction of Bien chromolithographs and will become the centerpiece of any bird lover’s library.
Book Synopsis Audubon's Great National Work by : Ronnie C. Tyler
Download or read book Audubon's Great National Work written by Ronnie C. Tyler and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Because the royal octavo edition is a work of art in its own right and the source of much of Audubon's reputation and popularity, Ron Tyler offers an engrossing narrative of the "little work's" conception, production, distribution, and reception. He mines a rich store of hitherto neglected sources, including Audubon family account books, newly discovered original drawings for the octavo edition, numerous proofs for the plates, sales records, and personal correspondence, for a fresh look at this important aspect of Audubon's career." "This study carefully reconstructs the processes that produced the most popular natural history book of the nineteenth century. Tyler describes the changes that Audubon made for his "petit edition," including the addition of seventeen species; explains the printing methods used to produce the plates; discusses, for the first time, the surprising differences between the plates in the double elephant folio and in the royal octavo and subsequent octavo editions; and outlines the way the Audubon family sold and distributed such a large and complex work. From these explorations, Audubon emerges not only as a woodsman artist, but also as a careful and persistent businessman of proven entrepreneurial ability.".
