Book excerpt: A two-process model of pattern discrimination was developed to describe how tonal sequences are processed, stored, and discriminated by human observers. The model was evaluated in tasks in which observers were required to discriminate between the spectral or temporal patterns encoded in two sequences of tones. The experimental results supported the assumptions of a trace/context coding theory. The trace mechanism is relatively insensitive to temporal transformations made to frequency-coded patterns but relatively sensitive to temporal transformations made to temporally coded patterns. The effects of intervening maskers on the trace were also evaluated.
