Book excerpt: Several studies of temporal pattern perception were conducted using tasks where the listener discriminated whether two tonal sequences formed the same temporal pattern or which of two patterns was more rhythmic. In different conditions, the stimulus patterns were delayed, time expanded or compressed, presented at different frequencies and to different ears, or constructed of sub- patterns having different temporal correlations. Mathematical models of performance were employed to describe performance in these tasks. Further work was accomplished extending signal detection theory to the performance of statistically ideal and (certain) non-ideal groups. Other experiments were conducted on the processing of visual display elements as a function of element reliability and perceptual structure.

Book excerpt: A two-process model of pattern discrimination was developed to describe how tonal sequences are processed, stored, and discriminated by human observers. The model was evaluated in tasks in which observers were required to discriminate between the spectral or temporal patterns encoded in two sequences of tones. The experimental results supported the assumptions of a trace/context coding theory. The trace mechanism is relatively insensitive to temporal transformations made to frequency-coded patterns but relatively sensitive to temporal transformations made to temporally coded patterns. The effects of intervening maskers on the trace were also evaluated. Keywords: Auditory perception, Auditory sequence discrimination auditory patterns, Auditory memory, Temporal uncertainty, Models of auditory signal processing. (aw).

Book excerpt: This project examined how human listeners discriminate temporal patterns and how groups of human observers detect signals presented on complex visual displays. The experiments with temporally-coded auditory patterns showed how listeners' attention is influenced by the position and the amount of information carried by different segments of the pattern. Analyses of group signal detection included mathematical analyses, computer simulations, and human experiments. These analyses specified the effects on performance of team member ability, team decision rule, correlation between member judgments, and type of member interaction. The results of this research may be useful for improving the design of auditory display systems and for optimizing the performance of decision making teams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The systematic scientific investigation of human perception began over 130 years ago, yet relatively little is known about how we identify complex patterns. A major reason for this is that historically, most perceptual research focused on the more basic processes involved in the detection and discrimination of simple stimuli. This work progressed in a connectionist fashion, attempting to clarify fundamental mechanisms in depth before addressing the more complex problems of pattern recognition and classification. This extensive and impressive research effort built a firm basis from which to speculate about these issues. What seemed lacking, however, was an overall characterization of the recognition problem – a broad theoretical structure to direct future research in this area. Consequently, our primary objective in this volume, originally published in 1981, was not only to review existing contributions to our understanding of classification and recognition, but to project fruitful areas and directions for future research as well. The book covers four areas: complex visual patterns; complex auditory patterns; multi-dimensional perceptual spaces; theoretical pattern recognition.

Book excerpt: A series of experiments testing the discrimination of random temporal patterns (single frequency tone sequences) was performed. The observer's task was to discriminate whether two sequences of tones contained the same or different patterns of temporal gaps. Half of the experimental trials contained gap sequences that were perfectly correlated across the two sequences (e.g. the temporal patterns were identical), and half the trials contained gap sequences that were partially correlated (the correlation was controlled by adding the outputs of two normal deviate generators). A model of discrimination, based on computation of the sample correlation between the gaps, and limited by a fixed source of internal (independent) temporal noise, allowed good prediction of observer performance. Some additional sources of variance were due to encoding or memory limitations. The correlation model makes specific predictions about the consequences of sequence time compression and expansion on performance; experiments are under way to evaluate the effects of these transformations. Keywords: Auditory perception; Auditory sequence discrimination; Temporal pattern perception. (KT).

Book excerpt: A detailed report of research on localization of sound in space after transection of auditory pathways in the tectum is given. The ability to localize sound in space was measured in a series of patients who had parts of the temporal lobe removed unilaterally and in patients with removal of cortex of the frontal lobes. One patient, had a right hemispherectomy. Three of the patients with temporal lobe ablation made poorer scores than normal subjects or patients with frontal lobe damage. The others made scores as good as some normal subjects. The patient with right hemispherectomy localized a noise source with surprising accuracy, an average error (for light spot placed at estimated source of sound) of about 5 degrees. There was some tendency for localization to be poorer in the auditory field opposite the side of lesion. An attempt was made to discover the areas of association cortex of the temporal lobes that are involved in learning auditory and visual discriminations. In the cat, isolation of auditory areas AI, AII, and Ep from insular-temporal and from other cortex by ablating a band of insular-temporal and from other cortex by ablating a band of surrounding cortical tissue does not affect pattern discrimination. There is no temporary amnesia for the learned habit. In the monkey, new experiments confirmed the finding of earlier experiments that auditory pattern discrimination is impaired but can be relearned after bilateral removal of the anterior part of the superior surface of the superior temporal convolution, a region of cortex that receives projection from the dorsal posterior portion of the lateral geniculate body. Book excerpt: Humans manifest an acute awareness of the passage of time and capacity for mental time travel, i.e., the ability to mentally place oneself in the past or future, as well as in counterfactual or hypothetical situations. The ability to perceive, estimate, and keep track of time involves multiple forms of representation (temporal concepts and frames of reference) and sensory modalities. Temporal cognition plays a critical role in various forms of memory (e.g., autobiographical memory, episodic memory, prospective memory), future-oriented thinking (foresight, planning), self-concepts, and autonoetic consciousness. This Research Topic addresses the myriad ways that temporal cognition impacts human behavior, how it develops, its clinical relevance, and the extent to which aspects of temporal cognition are uniquely human. Papers in this Research Topic focus on the following: 1) Low-level perceptual mechanisms that track durations, intervals, and other temporal features of stimuli. 2) Inter-relatedness of temporal reasoning and language development. 3) Temporal cognition in children with autism. 4) Cross-domain mappings between space and time across visual and auditory modalities. 5) Assessing mental time travel as a uniquely human capacity. 6) Implications of individual differences in temporal processing for health and well-being.
