Book excerpt: The Assessment of Basic Learning Abilities (ABLA) Test assesses the ease or difficulty with which individuals are able to learn a simple imitation and five two-choice discriminations that are hierarchically ordered in difficulty. It has been demonstrated that the ABLA Test is a useful assessment and training tool for developmentally disabled persons. Previous research suggests, however, that it may be worthwhile to add a bridging task between ABLA Level 4--a visual-visual identity discrimination task, and ABLA Level 5--an auditory-visual nonidentity discrimination task involving speech sounds. The present study focussed on this possibility. The proposed bridging task (an auditory matching task) involved presenting the participant with one of two "simple" sounds (the identity of which was randomly alternated across trials) and then requiring him or her to respond by manipulating one of two objects to produce a matching sound. The results of the present research suggest that the acquisition of auditory (speech) discriminations is a complex process that may be influenced by numerous factors, including developmental level and living environment. The present research did not conclusively demonstrate that learning a simpler auditory discrimination facilitated learning a more complex auditory (speech) discrimination. Directions for further research are suggested that could enhance the effectiveness of the ABLA as a practical assessment tool.

Book excerpt: Brain disordersâ€"neurological, psychiatric, and developmentalâ€"now affect at least 250 million people in the developing world, and this number is expected to rise as life expectancy increases. Yet public and private health systems in developing countries have paid relatively little attention to brain disorders. The negative attitudes, prejudice, and stigma that often surround many of these disorders have contributed to this neglect. Lacking proper diagnosis and treatment, millions of individual lives are lost to disability and death. Such conditions exact both personal and economic costs on families, communities, and nations. The report describes the causes and risk factors associated with brain disorders. It focuses on six representative brain disorders that are prevalent in developing countries: developmental disabilities, epilepsy, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, and stroke. The report makes detailed recommendations of ways to reduce the toll exacted by these six disorders. In broader strokes, the report also proposes six major strategies toward reducing the overall burden of brain disorders in the developing world.

Book excerpt: This volume offers foundational information and research-based strategies for meeting the needs of deaf and hard of hearing learners with disabilities. The disabilities covered in this volume include developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual and learning disabilities, deafblindness, emotional and behavioral disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and a variety of high incidence syndromes. Contributors examine the literature within each disability category, share best practices, and consider demographics/characteristics, intervention/identification, placement, communication/language, psychosocial issues, assistive technologies/accommodations, assessments, and transition/post-secondary outcomes. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and concludes with discussion questions and a resource list. Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners with Disabilities is an essential book for courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, and in workshops and webinars for in-service teachers, professionals, and families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986. This book is concerned with the problems children have in learning in normal or remedial classrooms, within ordinary primary schools. It deals with children in the 5 to 11 age range but much is also applicable to children at the lower end of the secondary school. It looks at a wide range of difficulties and for each area it classifies and describes the difficulties, considers the numbers of children with the difficulty; and discusses problems of diagnosis and remediation. It reviews certain psychological theories and research findings and relates them to practice; and it describes the work of professionals such as speech therapists, showing how the classroom teacher can support such professionals; but the major concern of the book is to help practicing teachers and teachers in training to work out intelligently for themselves how to improve their performance in this area.
