Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine audiological services in Idaho school districts that do and do not have an audiologist in charge of the program. Further examined was the perceived knowledge about hearing loss by teachers who have children who are deaf or hard of hearing in their mainstream classrooms. Districts with an audiologist in charge were found to be better complying with the guidelines set forth by ASHA, EAA, and IDEA 1997 than districts that do not have an audiologist. The audiology group had a mean criterion total score (19.8 of 21) significantly higher than the districts without an audiologist (14.3), indicating that the audiology group was much closer to meeting the recommended guidelines. The audiology group identified children with hearing loss at 1.2% prevalence rate while the non-audiology group only identified .3%. There were also 2.5 times more hearing aid and assistive listening device users in audiology districts than in non-audiology districts. No significant difference was found in perceived knowledge by teachers in the audiology and non-audiology districts, but there were significant differences favoring teachers who had in-service in the last five years compared to those who did not.
