Book Synopsis The Euthanasia/Assisted-Suicide Debate by : Demetra M. Pappas
Download or read book The Euthanasia/Assisted-Suicide Debate written by Demetra M. Pappas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revealing volume explores recent historical perspectives on the modern euthanasia and assisted-suicide debate and the political arenas in which it has unfolded. Emotional public responses to widely publicized right-to-die and euthanasia cases, such as those revolving around Dr. Jack Kevorkian and Terri Schiavo, highlight their volatile mix of medical, ethical, religious, legal, and public policy issues. The Euthanasia/Assisted-Suicide Debate explores how this debate has evolved over the past 100 years as judicial approaches, legislative responses, and prosecutorial practices have shifted as a result of changes in medical technology and consumer sophistication. Emphasizing the period from the 1950s forward, the book offers an unbiased examination of the origins of the modern medical euthanasia and assisted-suicide debates, the involvement of physicians, the history and significance of medical technology and practice, and the role of patients and their families in the ongoing controversy. This illuminating exploration of concepts, issues, and players will help readers understand both sides of the debate as viewed by participants.

Book Synopsis The Recall, Second Edition by : Joseph F. Zimmerman
Download or read book The Recall, Second Edition written by Joseph F. Zimmerman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recall, or "election in reverse," is meant to allow voters to remove an elected official from office prior to the completion of his/her term in office. In this revised second edition of The Recall, Joseph F. Zimmerman examines the rise of the recall in the United States and its use by American voters. Proponents of the recall believe the threat of removal from office would ensure that elected officials would act in accord with the public's will, while opponents fear their use would disrupt and inhibit public officers in the performance of their duties. Zimmerman provides a detailed analysis of how the recall has functioned in practice and discovers that the recall has seldom been employed against elected state officials. Although used more often against local government officials, the rate is still not exceptionally high when one considers the extremely large number of elected officials. After a century of use in the United States, the recall has not produced a new era of public official responsibility as hoped for by proponents, but neither has it caused extensive disruption of state and local governments, the original concern of early opponents.

Book excerpt: Legal Aspects of Health Care Reimbursement, written in 1985, presents a historical perspective of reimbursement legislation and regulations with regard to several important aspects of Medicare and Medicaid claims, which have a great potential for fraud and abuse. Focus is on penalties and offenses. Part I deals with Medicare. Several well-documented chapters are dedicated to long-term care, inpatient hospital reimbursement, hospice care, and end-stage renal disease. Part II, deals with Medicaid. In addition to inpatient hospital reimbursement and long-term care, there is an informative expose of abortion and family planning services, to include U.S. Supreme Court cases, legislative restrictions, regulations, and litigation. Each chapter concludes with an "Outlook" section that suggests ways of containing inequities, limiting costs or improving flawed procedures. This impeccably researched study is valuable reading not only for lawyers and health care administrators, but for all health care professionals. Book jacket.
