Book excerpt: Abstract: The issue of the disproportionate number of African American students in the k-12 arena who fall short in their educational pursuits has been heavily discussed by educators who desire to uncover the reason for the disparity. Yet, most research on African American students merely provides a quantitative description of their shortcomings, and fails to provide comprehensive information that addresses causes for attrition and academic deficiency. Moreover, there is minimal literature and research that focuses on resiliency in African American undergraduate college students, and particularly first generation individuals, which is a great cause for concern as retention rates for the group fall far below those of the majority cohort. The purpose of this study was to explore and familiarize researchers and educators with the life experiences of selected first generation African American college students who have successfully completed three or more years of undergraduate studies, in spite of negative and detrimental factors and situations that appeared throughout their lifetime journeys. The study also shines light on how some students make meaning of their life's experiences and recognizes how different events have been of influence on their voyage to and now in, higher education. It is important to note that this study is phenomenological in nature, and thus, posed no theory at its inception, but sought to reveal the lived experiences of the participants, due to the reality that few studies have centered on African American college students and their stories of survival and success, particularly in their higher education endeavors. This study highlights how these students have utilized the protective factors of spirituality, educational institutions, the view of success as obligatory to the family and community, and self-regulation in their onward journey to educational attainment, each of which have enabled them to remain strong and focused even as a number of obstacles became apparent. Lastly, I compose strategies that serve to provide colleges and universities, and other vested parties with valuable information that serve to aid in the development of strategies, programs and initiatives that can be of impact on the retention rates for African American students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the psycho-social predictors for academic success of first-generation African-American college students attending a HBCU. Specifically, the study sought to determine if there was a difference between academically resilient and academically nonresilient first-generation African-American college students on related psycho-social constructs that included internal resilience and external protective factors. This study used Kumpfer's Transactional Model of Resilience, as a theoretical framework for understanding the factors which impact student success (Kumpfer, 1999). Three instruments were used to collect data: (a) the Resilience Scale (Wagnild & Young, 1993); (b) a 36-item Support Questionnaire (Lozada-Santone, 2001); and (c) a Demographics Questionnaire developed specifically for this study. A survey research design was used, in addition to correlational analysis. The accessible population and initial sample size included 621 first-generation African-American college students which consisted of male and female students who ranged in age from 18 to 34. The statistics analyzed and discussed were from the final sample of 195 first-generation African-American college students. The results of the present study suggested the following: participants in this study reported having high internal resilience and low external protective factors; correlational analyses revealed statistically significant negative correlations between internal resilience and external protective factors; there were no statistically significant relationships found between internal resilience and academic resilience; there were no statistically significant relationships found between external protective factors and academic resilience; and there were no statistically significant differences between academically resilient and academically nonresilient students. Concisely, this study contributed to the body of research in internal resilience and external protective factors by confirming the need to further investigate these concepts as they relate to first-generation African-American college students. It is vital for researchers interested in the academic success of first-generation college attendees to critically seek answers by scrutinizing variables that have been disregarded in the literature. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The primary purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between racial identity, resilience, coping, and college retention in a sample of 94 African American college students attending a predominantly White University. Based upon the current literature, a mediation model was proposed. Specifically, it was hypothesized that the relationship between resilience and college retention would be mediated by the internalization stage of racial identity (M1), problem-focused coping behaviors (M2), and emotion-focused coping behaviors (M3). Results revealed a positive relationship between college retention and the internalization stage of racial identity (B = 0.89, z = 2.82, p = .005), and a negative relationship between problem-focused coping and college retention (B = -.088, z = -2.24, p = .025). Bootstrapping analyses indicted no significant indirect effects for M1 (point estimate = -.0033, 95% BCA of -.0173 to .0058), M2 (point estimate = -.0055, 95% BCA of -.0203 to .0027), or M3 (point estimate = .0014, 95% BCA of -.0028 to .0168). Despite the absence of mediation, the findings of this study highlighted the complex nature of these constructs and the continued need for further exploration into their relationship.

Researchers have further described hardiness as the willingness to pursue challenges, transform them, and make them work for an individual. Hardiness has been shown to buffer against depression, anxiety, and self-esteem (Maddi, 2002; Maddi et al., 2011; Maddi & Khoshaba, 2001). Given that the hardiness theory has been criticized in previous studies, (Benishek & Lopez, 1997), the theoretical framework of this study will be through resilience theory (Holling, Gunderson, & Ludwig, 2002). Resilience theory aims to understand the foundation and role of change that it is transforming in adaptive systems, allowing individuals to learn from past experiences and accept the inevitably of uncertainties in their future (Holling et al., 2002; Redman & Kinzig, 2003). Few studies investigate hardiness among Black populations. The few that have, showed that hardiness positively correlated with the internalized multiculturalist aspect of racial identity (Whittaker and Neville, 2010) and the commitment component of hardiness was higher among a sample of Black college students compared to White college students (Harris, 2004). Given that hardiness is a buffer to stress-related illness, theoretically, it should be a buffer against race-related stress. Race-related stress refers to the daily experiences of racism that affect members in the Black community and negatively impacts mental and physical health (Harrell, 2000; Utsey & Ponterotto, 1996). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between hardiness, race-related stress, and racial identity on psychological health outcomes (i.e., depression, anxiety, self-esteem) among Black colleges students. These outcome variables were included particularly to see how they are impacted by race-related stress, and if hardiness buffers, or moderates, these relationships. In addition, previous studies were replicated looking at the moderating role of racial identity on the race-related stress and psychological health outcomes relationship. In another test, findings also showed that hardiness served as a moderator for both the internalized afrocentricity subscale of racial identity and the perseverative cognition subscale of race-related stress on depression. Specifically, participants who were low on hardiness and high on afrocentricity reported higher levels of depression than those were high on both hardiness and afrocentricity. Similarly, participants who were higher on hardiness and high on perseverative cognition reported lower levels of depression than those who were low in both hardiness and perseverative cognition. Through replication attempts, the anticipatory body alarm response subscale of race-related stress on trait anxiety was moderated by the immersion-emersion anti-White subscale of racial identity. Participants who were high in anti-White attitudes and high on anticipatory body alarm response reported higher levels of trait anxiety than those who were low on anti-White attitudes and low on anticipatory body alarm response. This finding replicated previous studies by Franklin-Jackson and Carter (2007) that found that the internalized stages of racial identity (i.e., afrocentricity and multiculturalist) were significant and positive buffers on the race-related stress and psychological health outcomes. However, neither the total hardiness nor the hardiness subscales scores significantly correlated with any of the race-related stress subscales. Implications suggest that the hardiness measure may not be as generalizable to members in the Black community if considering the added layer of race-related stress because hardiness did not significantly correlate with any of the race-related stress subscales. Hardiness may help to buffer depression the type of race-related stress and racial identity profile. In looking at racial identity stages, anxiety may be buffered when one is out of the anti-White stage of racial identity. It is recommended that University counselors, professors, and/or administrators take this into account when working with this specific population on psychological health outcomes. Further, their level of hardiness should continue to be emphasized and acknowledged as strength-based protective factors in University settings.

Book excerpt: The college environment provides a host of stressful exposures as a result of students being immersed in a new academic and social environment. Certain coping strategies used to alleviate stress (e.g., avoidance) are related to an increase in negative behaviors and mental health problems, which can be exacerbated in college students. However, other coping strategies, such as social support and religion, have been shown to promote psychological health. African Americans/Blacks tend to underutilize mental health care services despite the greater likelihood of certain stressors such as racial discrimination compared to Caucasians/Whites. Furthermore, African American/Black college students are underrepresented in coping research. The goal of the study was to evaluate whether the relationship between social support and religious coping strategies and psychological health is different for African American/Black college students compared to Caucasian/White college students. It was hypothesized that African American/Black students would use more social support and religious coping strategies than Caucasians/Whites, and that race would moderate the relation between these coping strategies and both positive and negative affect. Data were collected from a sample of 170 undergraduate students (18.8% African American/Black, 81.2% Caucasian/White) who participated in a larger study on coping that utilized an internet-based daily diary design. Participants responded to questionnaires that assessed daily stressful events, use of coping strategies, positive affect, and negative affect over the course of five days. To account for variation at the individual level and repeated measures, analysis was conducted using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM). Racial differences were found in the frequency of certain aspects of coping, specifically higher use among African American/Black students of seeking God’s help and talking to family about how they were feeling as compared to Caucasian/White students. No racial moderation of the coping-affect relations was found, however. Findings also suggested a lack of racial differences in cultural values. Further research should continue to explore the relation between coping mechanisms and different measures of psychological health, while considering the potential contributing effects of racial differences.

Book excerpt: Black medical students experience unique race-based stressors within the medical training environment that compromise their psychological and professional well-being, as well as their motivations to remain in medicine. Such detriments may undermine broader efforts to diversify the medical workforce, and by extension, reduce health disparities. The Race-based Disparities in Stress and Sleep in Context (RDSSC) model predicts that specific coping resources may alter racial minority students' appraisals of race-based stressors and facilitate coping responses that promote psychological and educational well-being. This study examined the validity of race-based stress and coping pathways theorized within the RDSSC model among a national sample of Black medical students. An online survey was administered that assessed participant demographics and measures of race-based stressors, internal and external coping resources, coping response, psychological distress, and educational outcomes. Regression analyses were conducted to examine coping response as a mediator of the relationship between race-based stressors and mental health and educational outcomes, and between coping resources and mental health and educational outcomes. Structural Equation Modeling was employed to assess the overall fit of study data to the RDSSC model. Partial support was found for race-based stress and coping pathways theorized within the RDSSC model. Study findings regarding the influence of race-based stressors, coping resources, and coping response on mental health and educational outcomes have implications for medical education and Black medical student well-being. Additional institutional and individual-level interventions to reduce the occurrence of race-based stressors and increase the availability of coping resources among Black medical students are warranted.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain insight into the internal and external protective factors that served to mitigate risk in the lives of academically resilient African American students. Moreover, an examination of the process by which these students achieved academic success despite factors that typically place students "at-risk" or "educationally vulnerable" for academic failure was the goal of this research inquiry. Twenty-one graduating seniors across four high schools were interviewed as part of this phenomenological research investigation. Several themes emerged that supported existing literature on academic resilience and African American students. All participants discussed the impact of both internal and external protective factors across home, schools, and communities that led to academic success. In addition, the majority of respondents reported that in their respective schools, education was valued, responsibilities were often shared among others, and positive and supportive relationships were encouraged across students, teachers, and school staff. Furthermore, participants discussed the process of being resilient, specifically encountering various challenges, but working to achieve their academic goals.
