Responses to a pre- and post-survey provided data to examine three research questions after participants completed an Information Literacy Skill Intervention for Middle School Teachers: 1. Does knowledge of ILS instruction influence projected teaching practices of participants? a. What changes, if any, are seen in participant self-reports regarding the frequency that they required students to complete information literacy (IL) tasks during past as compared to projected requirements for future research projects? b. What changes, if any, are seen in participant self-reports regarding the frequency that they provided ILS instruction for past research projects as compared to projected provision for future research projects? 2. What changes, if any, are seen in participant attitudes toward ILS instruction? 3. What do participants report as reasons for including and for not including ILS when teaching middle school students? Significant differences were seen between pre- and post-survey responses regarding ILS student tasks and instruction. Question 1 outcomes revealed significant changes regarding required ILS student tasks, with key changes evidenced for evaluating the information solving process; defining the problem; identifying appropriate resources; and evaluating the product or performance. Question 2 results revealed significant changes regarding increased teacher belief in instructing students to evaluate resources for validity and citing sources to avoid plagiarism; a shift in teacher attitudes regarding who should teach ILS and in which courses it should be taught, with notable shifts for art, music, and mathematics. The findings suggest most participants recognized the value of including ILS in instruction and requiring students to complete ILS tasks to increase research skills. Participant open-ended responses for Question 3 suggest a belief in the importance of ILS and the inclusion of ILS in all subject areas, with less agreement regarding ILS for math and physical education. Participants expressed a need for professional development to appropriately include ILS instruction and student tasks for future research projects. Implications include areas such as instructional design for intervention, professional development for current teachers, and training for future educators.

Book excerpt: Currently, the state of Ohio has a separate licensure classification specific to middle-level education, but this was not always the case. Prior to 1998, core teachers were prepared by universities to focus on elementary (K-8) or secondary (7-12). Teachers who obtained their license after the reform are broken into three groups: Early Childhood (PreK-3), Middle Childhood (4-9), and Adolescent-to-Young Adult (7-12). This study examined the relationship between an educator's license, role in the school, and professional experience to their comparative valuation of middle-level education's best practices and philosophies as described by the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE). As states examine returning to a broader grade-band licensure system to increase the flexibility of teacher assignments, this study's results may help to illuminate the relative impact a change may have on teachers' attitudes and values. This research tested the hypothesis that educators with a middle childhood license will value specific characteristics differently than those with other certifications and school roles. An online survey was completed by Ohio middle-level educators. The participants placed a valuation score between the three categories that describe AMLE's best practices and identified the most important of those groups' characteristics. While the analysis did not find a statistically significant difference across most of the variables, trends did emerge in what educators identified most with. This research gives insight to middle-level school leaders of which practices have the greatest amount of belief and support amongst the staff and which elements may need more support.

Book excerpt: With current federal mandates in place, school districts have faced challenges in ensuring all students receive access to the general education curriculum (Cook, Chamberlain, Friend & Shamberger, 2010; Murawski & Dieker, 2013). To aid in alleviating requirements of federal mandates, many school districts have implemented the inclusion model of co-teaching to ensure special educations students are receiving access to the general education curriculum at least 80% of their school day (Friend, 2018; Murawski & Dieker, 2013). However, co-teaching has many misconceptions, specifically regarding teacher and administrator attitudes (Cook et al., 2010; Friend, 2018; Harris, 2014; Murawski & Dieker, 2013). This embedded mixed methods study investigated and explored attitudes of stakeholders regarding co-teaching. Co-teaching is multi-faceted and therefore is recommended to be implemented incrementally to address any misconceptions tied to the inclusion model. The study explored the dimensions of co-teaching tied to the components of cognitive, behavioral and affective attitude (Boehner & Schwartz, 2001; Breckler, 1984). The embedded mixed methods study addressed seven research questions; five quantitative and two qualitative. During the quantitative phase, a questionnaire was administered to all building level administration, guidance counselors and teachers in grades 6-12 within a school district in the Northeast. The quantitative survey was distributed to investigate stakeholder attitudes regarding co-teaching. In the qualitative phase, four interviews were conducted to explore and interpret the attitudes’ of stakeholders in regards to the data from the quantitative survey. The findings from this embedded mixed methods study included the need for administrative support, continuous professional development, intentionality behind scheduling, and understanding the instructional model to effectively benefit all students. The results from this study may benefit school leaders, guidance counselors, and teachers in identifying the supports needed to create an effective co-teaching model, which in turn may lead to student academic success and may help close the achievement gap that exists between special education students and general education students.
