Book Synopsis Atoms and Elements by : David M. Knight
Download or read book Atoms and Elements written by David M. Knight and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1967. The impression is sometimes given that the Atomic Theory was revived in the early years of the nineteenth century by John Dalton, and that continuously from then on it has played a vital role in chemistry. The aim of this study is to revise this over-simplified picture. Atomic explanations seemed to chemists to go beyond the facts, to fail to lend themselves to mathematical expression, and to deny the ultimate simplicity and unity of all matter. Most, therefore, rejected them. Meanwhile, physicists were developing a whole range of atomic theories to explain the physical properties of bodies in terms of very simple atoms or particles. During the last thirty years of the century the position changed, as physicists and chemists came to agree on a common atomic theory. But the last prominent opponents of atomism were not converted until the early years of the twentieth century, by which time studies of radioactivity had made it clear that the billiard-ball Daltonian atom must, in any case, be abandoned.

Book Synopsis Structure And Dynamics Of Heterogeneous Systems: From Atoms, Molecules And Clusters In Complex Environment To Thin Films And Multilayers by : Peter Entel
Download or read book Structure And Dynamics Of Heterogeneous Systems: From Atoms, Molecules And Clusters In Complex Environment To Thin Films And Multilayers written by Peter Entel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-05-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions from cooperative research activities in physics and chemistry and addresses heterogeneous systems like atoms and molecules in complex environments, dye molecules like the retinal chromophore in the protein box of the human eye, interacting atoms/molecules in the interlayer of adsorbed structures, nucleation and domain formation processes in magnetic and martensitic systems. The particular aim of the contributions is to deduce the connection between different grades of heterogeneity and to bridge the gap between chemicals and heterogeneity on the atomic scale, and the physics of macroscopically heterogeneous systems. Besides the diverse experimental tools employed in the investigations, accompanying theoretical investigations range from ab initio molecular dynamics studies of the microscopic systems to Monte-Carlo simulations of the larger-scale problems.
Book Synopsis Giant Resonances in Atoms, Molecules, and Solids by : J.P. Connerade
Download or read book Giant Resonances in Atoms, Molecules, and Solids written by J.P. Connerade and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often, a new area of science grows at the confines between recognised subject divisions, drawing upon techniques and intellectual perspectives from a diversity of fields. Such growth can remain unnoticed at first, until a characteristic fami ly of effects, described by appropriate key words, has developed, at which point a distinct subject is born. Such is very much the case with atomic 'giant resonances'. For a start, their name itself was borrowed from the field of nuclear collective resonances. The energy range in which they occur, at the juncture of the extreme UV and the soft X-rays, remains to this day a meeting point of two different experimental techniques: the grating and the crystal spectrometer. The impetus of synchrotron spectroscopy also played a large part in developing novel methods, described by many acronyms, which are used to study 'giant resonances' today. Finally, although we have described them as 'atomic' to differentiate them from their counterparts in Nuclear Physics, their occurrence on atomic sites does not inhibit their existence in molecules and solids. In fact, 'giant resonances' provide a new unifying theme, cutting accross some of the traditional scientific boundaries. After much separate development, the spectroscopies of the atom in various environments can meet afresh around this theme of common interest. Centrifugal barrier effects and 'giant resonances' proper emerged almost simultaneously in the late 1960's from two widely separated areas of physics, namely the study of free atoms and of condensed matter.

Book Synopsis Atoms, Molecules and Photons by : Wolfgang Demtröder
Download or read book Atoms, Molecules and Photons written by Wolfgang Demtröder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-10 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed during the last two centuries by many experimental discoveries and from the theoretical side by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in more detail and in particular lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed more thoroughly. Many examples and problems with solutions should induce the reader to an intense active cooperation.
Book Synopsis Islands, Mounds and Atoms by : Thomas Michely
Download or read book Islands, Mounds and Atoms written by Thomas Michely and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crystal growth far from thermodynamic equilibrium is nothing but homoepitaxy - thin film growth on a crystalline substrate of the same material. Because of the absence of misfit effects, homoepitaxy is an ideal playground to study growth kinetics in its pure form. Despite its conceptual simplicity, homoepitaxy gives rise to a wide range of patterns. This book explains the formation of such patterns in terms of elementary atomic processes, using the well-studied Pt/Pt(111) system as a reference point and a large number of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy images for visualization. Topics include surface diffusion, nucleation theory, island shapes, mound formation and coarsening, and layer-by-layer growth. A separate chapter is dedicated to describing the main experimental and theoretical methods.

Book excerpt: Edgar Allan Poe's collection of 72 short stories, novels, and over 80 poems, along with essays, letters, and biography, offers a comprehensive insight into the mind of this renowned American literary figure. Poe's unique blend of macabre themes, psychological depth, and intricate symbolism sets him apart as a pioneer of Gothic fiction and a master of the short story form. His hauntingly beautiful prose and melancholic tone create a sense of unease and suspense that captivates readers from start to finish. This illustrated edition allows readers to fully immerse themselves in Poe's world, appreciating both the words on the page and the visual depictions that accompany them. Edgar Allan Poe's personal struggles, including the loss of loved ones and battles with alcoholism, heavily influenced his writing and added a profound depth to his exploration of themes such as death, love, and madness. His ability to craft intricate plots and memorable characters reflects his keen understanding of human psychology and his fascination with the darker aspects of human nature. I highly recommend Edgar Allan Poe's collection to readers who appreciate gothic literature, psychological depth, and masterful storytelling. This comprehensive volume showcases Poe's diverse talents and offers a unique glimpse into the mind of one of America's most celebrated literary figures.
