Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beyond the Atom This Essay is an attempt to tell in short compass the romantic story of the discoveries which within the last decade have led us beyond the atom. The great authorities and storehouses of fact are, of course, the books of Rutherford and (recently) Mme Curie on Radioactivity. Excellent statements of the main points are to be found in Strutt's Becquerel Rays, and Soddy's Interpretation of Radium. I have drawn upon all of them; upon the original papers in the current scientific periodicals; and also on my happy memories of those exciting times when for nine years I was privileged to witness at close quarters and discuss from day to day the work achieved by my friend and colleague Professor Rutherford in the Macdonald Physics Building of McGill University, Montreal, of which I was Director. Nor must I fail to express my special gratitude to Professor Rutherford for unstinted help and criticism while the work was passing through the press, without which, indeed, it could have had little value as an account of a subject still rapidly growing under his hands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atoms Two kinds of intellectual activity, both equally instino tive, have played a prominent part in the progress of physical science. One is already developed in a child that, while holding an object, knows what will happen if he relinquishes his grasp. He may possibly never have had hold of the particular object before, but he nevertheless recognises something in common between the muscular sensations it calls forth and those which he has already experienced when grasping other objects that fell to the ground when his grasp was relaxed. Men like Galileo and Carnot, who possessed this power of perceiving analogies to an extra ordinary degree, have by an analogous process built up the doctrine of energy by successive generalisations, cautious as well as bold, from experimental relationships and objective realities. In the first place they observed, or it would perhaps be better to say that everyone has observed, that not only does an object fall if it be dropped, but that once it has reached the ground it will not rise of itself. We have to pay before a lift can be made to ascend, and the more dearly the swifter and higher it rises. Of course, the real price is not a sum of money, but the external compensation given for the work done by the lift (the fall of a mass of water, the combustion of coal, chemical change in a battery): The money is only the symbol of this compensation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arrangement of Atoms in Space As the original views still survive in Stereo chemistry, this second edition presents once more a freely revised version of that brochure; but a section on nitrogen derivatives has been added. Besides this, in the part devoted to carbon, the greatly increased number of facts has been taken into account, and finally the amount of the rota tion of active bodies has received special attention. Book excerpt: jThis thoroughly updated and revised text contains a selection of well-written essays based on Silvermans work on a wide range of topics, including: quantum mechanics, including atomic and nuclear physics, electromagnetism and optics, gravity, thermodynamics, and the physics of fluids. Presenting a personal odyssey in physics, Silverman investigates processes for which no visualizable mechanism can be given, or that seem to violate fundamental physical laws (but do not). The discussions use little mathematics, and anyone with a little college physics will be able to read the book with pleasure. -Engagingly written -Easily understandable by both the general reader and the seasoned physicist -Covers a diversity of subjects from "hot" topics in contemporary physics to less widely known but subtle and intriguing issues in physics -Discusses real physical systems whose behavior provokes, surprises and challenges the imagination -This second edition is newly revised and updated
