Book Synopsis Atomic Structure of Transitional Metal Based Metallic Glasses by : Arthur Ray Williams
Download or read book Atomic Structure of Transitional Metal Based Metallic Glasses written by Arthur Ray Williams and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atomic-scale structure of several transition metal-based metallic glasses has been investigated by X-ray diffraction techniques. Current dense random packing models have been found to have only a superficial resemblance to the structure of real amorphous metallic alloys, and a theoretical density for amorphous transition metals has been obtained which might be used as a filter for more realistic single component models in the future. The partial pair distribution functions for individual pairs of atomic species have been obtained for glassy alloys of lanthanum with aluminum, gallium and gold through the use of isomorphous alloys. These systems have been demonstrated to be chemically ordered and the short range order of these alloys has been shown to be quite different from that of typical amorphous transition metal-metalloid alloys.

Book excerpt: Reflecting the fast pace of research in the field, the Second Edition of Bulk Metallic Glasses has been thoroughly updated and remains essential reading on the subject. It incorporates major advances in glass forming ability, corrosion behavior, and mechanical properties. Several of the newly proposed criteria to predict the glass-forming ability of alloys have been discussed. All other areas covered in this book have been updated, with special emphasis on topics where significant advances have occurred. These include processing of hierarchical surface structures and synthesis of nanophase composites using the chemical behavior of bulk metallic glasses and the development of novel bulk metallic glasses with high-strength and high-ductility and superelastic behavior. New topics such as high-entropy bulk metallic glasses, nanoporous alloys, novel nanocrystalline alloys, and soft magnetic glassy alloys with high saturation magnetization have also been discussed. Novel applications, such as metallic glassy screw bolts, surface coatings, hyperthermia glasses, ultra-thin mirrors and pressure sensors, mobile phone casing, and degradable biomedical materials, are described. Authored by the world’s foremost experts on bulk metallic glasses, this new edition endures as an indispensable reference and continues to be a one-stop resource on all aspects of bulk metallic glasses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metallic glasses and amorphous materials have attracted much more attention in the last two decades. A noncrystalline solid produced by continuous cooling from the liquid state is known as a glass. From the other point of view, a noncrystalline material, obtained by any other process, for example, vapor deposition or solid-state processing methods such as mechanical alloying, but not directly from the liquid state, is referred to as an amorphous material. At this moment, bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are appearing as a new class of metallic materials with unique physical and mechanical properties for structural and functional usage. Extreme values of strength, fracture toughness, magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and other properties have been registered in BMG materials.
Book Synopsis Structure and Properties of Transition Metal-metalloid Glasses Based on Refractory Metals by :
Download or read book Structure and Properties of Transition Metal-metalloid Glasses Based on Refractory Metals written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure and properties of several new transition metal-metalloid (TM/sub 1-x/M/sub x/) metallic glasses based on refractory transition metals (e.g. Mo, W, Ru etc.) have been systemically investigated as a function of composition. The structure of the alloys has been investigated by x-ray diffraction methods and measurements of superconducting properties, electrical resistivity, density, hardness, and mechanical behavior were made. These data are used in developing a novel description of the structure of TM/sub 1-x/M/sub x/ glasses. The experimental evidence suggests that an ideal amorphous phase forms at a specific composition x/sub c/ and that this phase has a well defined atomic short range order. For metallic glasses having x x/sub c/ (metalloid poor glasses) vacancy-like defects form, which are characterized by the excess volume which they contribute to the glass. Another, as yet unspecified defect appears to form in glasses with x x/sub c/. This novel picture can explain the variation of many properties of these glasses with metalloid concentration.

Download or read book Metallic Glasses written by Dragica Minić and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "metallic glasses" is widely used to denote the amorphous alloys obtained by rapid quenching techniques. These materials are characterized by short range atom ordering without translational periodicity of the structure. Kinetic and thermodynamic metastability is one of the main characteristics generally related to metallic glasses, while their thermally induced microstructural transformations could result in deterioration or improvement of the functional properties. Due to their favorable magnetic, electrical, mechanical, and anti-corrosion properties, metallic glasses as new and attractive materials have found application in many areas of modern industries - electronics, construction industry, aerospace industry; as well as chemistry, biomedicine, and surgery.
Book Synopsis Structural Analysis of Metallic Glasses with Computational Homology by : Akihiko Hirata
Download or read book Structural Analysis of Metallic Glasses with Computational Homology written by Akihiko Hirata and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the application of computational homology for structural analysis of metallic glasses. Metallic glasses, relatively new materials in the field of metals, are the next-generation structural and functional materials owing to their excellent properties. To understand their properties and to develop novel metallic glass materials, it is necessary to uncover their atomic structures which have no periodicity, unlike crystals. Although many experimental and simulation studies have been performed to reveal the structures, it is extremely difficult to perceive a relationship between structures and properties without an appropriate point of view, or language. The purpose here is to show how a new approach using computational homology gives a useful insight into the interpretation of atomic structures. It is noted that computational homology has rapidly developed and is now widely applied for various data analyses. The book begins with a brief basic survey of metallic glasses and computational homology, then goes on to the detailed procedures and interpretation of computational homology analysis for metallic glasses. Understandable and readable information for both materials scientists and mathematicians is also provided.
