Book excerpt: The Proceedings of this Fourth International Conference brought together 129 delegates from 13 countries, with the largest contingents from the US, Russia, the UK, and France. The results of theri rewsearch represent a huge increase in our knowledge of the z-pinch, thanks to new and more comprehensive diagnostics, better computer models, and even more powerful pulse generators. The most prominent example of the latter is the PBFA-Z machine at Sandia National Laboratories, whose record-shattering radiation output is being studied at Sandia and at collaborating laboratories elsewhere.

Book excerpt: Annotation The July 1994 symposium was an international forum in which scientists working in different research branches connected to nucleosynthesis could discuss the most recent achievements in nuclear astrophysics. The topics addressed range from laboratory work of nuclear astrophysics, especially on reaction rates, to models of nucleosynthesis in single and double stars; from measurements of abundances and isotopic anomalies in pristine meteorites to the reconstruction of the early evolutionary phases of the Solar System; and from optical and radio spectroscopic studies of the composition in stellar atmospheres and circumstellar envelopes to modeling of the global chemical evolution of galaxies. Book excerpt: The aim of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was to bring together scientists and students working in the field of laser matter interactions in order to review and stimulate developmentoffundamental science with ultra-short pulse lasers. New techniques of pulse compression and colliding-pulse mode-locking have made possible the construction of lasers with pulse lengths in the femtosecond range. Such lasers are now in operation at several research laboratories in Europe and the United States. These laser facilities present a new and exciting research direction with both pure and applied science components. In this ASI the emphasis is on fundamental processes occurring in the interaction of short laser pulses with atoms, molecules, solids, and plasmas. In the case of laser-atom (molecule) interactions, high power lasers provide the first access to extreme high-intensity conditions above 10'8 Watts/em', a new frontier for nonlinear interaction of photons with atoms and molecules. New phenomena observed include multiphoton ionization processes, atomic collisions in the presence of a strong laser field, Coulomb explosion following rapid ionization of a molecule and the production of high harmonics of the laser source. Another important topic reviewed in this ASI is the lasercooling ofatoms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on contributions to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Recombination of Atomic Ions. This was held at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, between 6 and 9 October 1991 and attracted 35 participants from 5 countries. The book is inter.~ed to serve as an in-depth review of work to this date on the subject of recombination of atomic ions both in collision with free electrons and with atoms. It contains contributions from almost all groups which have made significant contributions in this area during the last decade. In addition, a synopsis of the discussion session following each of the main subject areas is presented. The material is organized into several themes; an overview of the subject area, theoretical aspects of recombination, experimental measurements of electron-ion recombination and experimental measurement.s of recombination in ion-atom collisions. We would like to acknowledge the sponsorship of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. We would like to thank the Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Queen's University of Belfast for providing some additional funding. Finally we would like to thank all the contributors to these proceedings for their efforts in preparing the manuscripts and their assistance in the editing process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides and elementary introduction to the field of trapping highly charged ions. The first group of chapters is intended to describe the various sorts of highly charged ion traps: EBIT, EBIS, ECR, Storage Rings and various speciality traps. The authors focus on their own ion trap facilities in order to teach by example. The chapters range in scope from comprehensive reviews to brief introductions. The second group of chapters is intended to give a flavour of the various sorts of scientific research which are presently being carried out with traps for highly charged ions. These chapters not only inform, but also stimulate newcomers to think up fresh ideas. The articles in this second group generally fall into one of three broad categories: atomic structure experiments, ion-surface interactions and precision mass spectrometry. The third group of chapters is intended to deal with theory and spectroscopic analysis. It provides some of the background material necessary to make sense of observed phenomenology, to allow detailed explanation of experimental data, and to sensibly plan further experimentation. An appendix provides a complete keyword-annotated bibliography of pa

Book excerpt: Annotation At a time when several new and exciting technical developments are emerging in accelerator physics, yet the discipline is still reeling from the cancellation of the supercollider, 29 papers look at hadron accelerators, electron storage rings, coherent radiation sources, laser acceleration, and advanced concepts. The specific topics include colliding beams in a M:obius accelerator, the correction of emittance modulation by linear coupling, a quasi-periodic undulator, pulse propagation in the laser wakefield accelerator, and cooling particle beams.
