Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution has become a worldwide phenomenon and so has become concern for its control. The alarming situation has awakened administrators, engineers, technocrats, governments and international organizations to take steps to curb pollution. Educational institutions now include in their curricula various aspects of pollution (its nature and dimensions, health hazards it has created, and measures of controlling and managing it, etc.). This book contains a core course in Environment Management. It will be useful to students of Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, Biochemical and other disciplines of Engineering and Technology.

Book Synopsis Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment by : Harold F. Hemond
Download or read book Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment written by Harold F. Hemond and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-08-03 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment, Fourth Edition explains the fundamental principles of mass transport, chemical partitioning, and chemical/biological transformations of pollutants and naturally occurring chemicals in surface waters, in the subsurface (which includes soil and groundwater), and in the atmosphere. Each of these three major environmental media is introduced by a descriptive overview, followed by presentations of the governing physical, chemical, and biological processes. The text emphasizes intuitively based mathematical models for chemical equilibria, transformations, and transport in the environment. This book serves as a primary text for graduate and senior undergraduate courses in environmental science and engineering, provides relevant scientific knowledge for students of public health and environmental policy, and is a useful reference for environmental practitioners. This fourth edition builds on the third edition, which won a 2015 Textbook Excellence Award (Texty) from The Text and Academic Authors Association. This updated textbook expands the discussion of global climate change, presents concepts of stationarity and sustainability, provides additional coverage of wastewater treatment and air pollution abatement technologies, and includes information on additional anthropogenic pollutants such as plastics, PFAS, and nanoparticles. Tables, figures, and references are updated, and worked examples and practice exercises are included for each chapter. - Illustrates the interconnections, similarities, and contrasts among three major environmental media: surface waters, the subsurface (which includes soil and groundwater), and the atmosphere - Discusses and builds upon fundamental concepts, teaching students to realistically address environmental problems and preparing students for more advanced studies - Each chapter includes many worked examples and extensive practice exercises; a solutions manual is available for instructors
Book Synopsis Urban Air Quality Management by : Masami Kojima
Download or read book Urban Air Quality Management written by Masami Kojima and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details the context within which policy decisions and objectives for the property tax system are made in the transitional economies of Central and Eastern Europe. It shows how these policy decisions evolve as a part of the transitional reforms still in process. This book offers the chance to review the experiences of transitional countries in initiating and implementing fiscal instruments during a decade of enormous transformations. The research for the case studies, included in this book, was sponsored by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.

Book Synopsis The Ongoing Challenge of Managing Carbon Monoxide Pollution in Fairbanks, Alaska by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Ongoing Challenge of Managing Carbon Monoxide Pollution in Fairbanks, Alaska written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-22 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon monoxide (CO) is a toxic air pollutant produced largely from vehicle emissions. Breathing CO at high concentrations leads to reduced oxygen transport by hemoglobin, which has health effects that include impaired reaction timing, headaches, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, weakness, clouding of consciousness, coma, and, at high enough concentrations and long enough exposure, death. In recognition of those health effects, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as directed by the Clean Air Act, established the health-based National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for CO in 1971. Most areas that were previously designated as "nonattainment" areas have come into compliance with the NAAQS for CO, but some locations still have difficulty in attaining the CO standards. Those locations tend to have topographical or meteorological characteristics that exacerbate pollution. In view of the challenges posed for some areas to attain compliance with the NAAQS for CO, congress asked the National Research Council to investigate the problem of CO in areas with meteorological and topographical problems. This interim report deals specifically with Fairbanks, Alaska. Fairbanks was chosen as a case study because its meteorological and topographical characteristics make it susceptible to severe winter inversions that trap CO and other pollutants at ground level.

Book Synopsis Diesel and Gasoline Engine Exhausts and Some Nitroarenes by : IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans
Download or read book Diesel and Gasoline Engine Exhausts and Some Nitroarenes written by IARC Working Group on the Evaluation of Carcinogenic Risks to Humans and published by IARC Monographs on the Evaluat. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides evaluations of the carcinogenicity of diesel and gasoline engine exhausts, and of 10 nitroarenes found in diesel engine exhaust: 3,7-dinitrofluoranthene, 3,9-dinitrofluoranthene, 1,3-dinitropyrene, 1,6-dinitropyrene, 1,8-dinitropyrene, 6-nitrochrysene, 2-nitrofluorene, 1-nitropyrene, 4-nitropyrene, and 3-nitrobenzanthrone. Diesel engines are used for transport on and off roads (e.g. passenger cars, buses, trucks, trains, ships), for machinery in various industrial sectors (e.g. mining, construction), and for electricity generators, particularly in developing countries. Gasoline engines are used in cars and hand-held equipment (e.g. chainsaws). The emissions from such combustion engines comprise a complex and varying mixture of gases (e.g. carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides), particles (e.g. PM10, PM2.5, ultrafine particles, elemental carbon, organic carbon, ash, sulfate, and metals), volatile organic compunds (e.g. benzene, formaldehyde) and semi-volatile organic compounds (e.g. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) including oxygenated and nitrated derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Diesel and gasoline engines thus make a significant contribution to a broad range of air pollutants to which people are exposed in the general population as well as in different occupational settings. An IARC Monographs Working Group reviewed epidemiological evidence, animal bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to reach conclusions as to the carcinogenic hazard to humans of environmental or occupational exposure to diesel and gasoline engine exhausts (including those associated with the mining, railroad, construction, and transportation industries) and to 10 selected nitroarenes. -- Back cover.
