Book excerpt: An evaluation is performed for two millimeter wave propagation models: the LIEBE model, developed at the Institute for Telecommunications, Boulder, CO, under the guidance of Dr. H. Liebe; and the EOSAEL model, developed at the US Army Atmospheric Laboratory at White Sands Missile Range, NM. This evaluation is conducted for horizontal attenuation due to both clear atmosphere and hydrometer effects under typical surface meteorological conditions, and within the frequency range 70-115 GHz. Intercomparisons of model theories and predictions show slight differences for molecular oxygen and fog attenuations, but significant differences for water vapor and rain attenuations. Results indicate that, while the qualitative agreement between either the EOSAEL or LIEBE model predictions, and measurements, for horizontal attenuation due to oxygen, water vapor, fog and rain is certainly satisfactory, there is a definite need for improvement. Overall, no clear preference for either the EOSAEL or LIEBE model for operational use is ascertained. Data comparisons suggest that, for several attenuation types, model preference is dependent on either the frequency or meteorological conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because prevailing atmospheric/troposcopic conditions greatly influence radio wave propagation above 10 GHz, the unguided propagation of microwaves in the neutral atmosphere can directly impact many vital applications in science and engineering. These include transmission of intelligence, and radar and radiometric applications used to probe the atmosphere, among others. Where most books address either one or the other, Microwave Propagation and Remote Sensing: Atmospheric Influences with Models and Applications melds coverage of these two subjects to help readers develop solutions to the problems they present. This reference offers a brief, elementary account of microwave propagation through the atmosphere and discusses radiometric applications in the microwave band used to characterize and model atmospheric constituents, which is also known as remote sensing. Summarizing the latest research results in the field, as well as radiometric models and measurement methods, this book covers topics including: Free space propagation Reflection, interference, polarization, and other key aspects of electromagnetic wave propagation Radio refraction and its effects on propagation delay Methodology of estimating water vapor attenuation using radiosonde data Knowledge of rain structures and use of climatological patterns to estimate/measure attenuation of rain, snow, fog, and other prevalent atmospheric particles and human-made substances Dual/multifrequency methodology to deal with the influence of clouds on radiometric attenuation Deployment of microwaves to ascertain various tropospheric conditions Composition and characteristics of the troposphere, to help readers fully understand microwave propagation Derived parameters of water, free space propagation, and conditions and variable constituents such as water vapor and vapor pressure, density, and ray bending

Book excerpt: The results of a study to determine the atmospheric limitations upon the propagation of millimeter wavelength signals are presented. The analysis concerned both theoretical and experimental studies. The effects of the homogeneous and inhomogeneous atmosphere are discussed in terms of absorption and dispersion. In addition, the limitations imposed by these effects upon three idealized systems representative of a pulse compression radar, pulse amplitude-modulated and frequency-shift keyed data links were analyzed. Numerical values of the maximum usable bandwidth and minimum transmitted pulse length for frequencies in the absorption windows were calculated for representative atmospheric models and transmission paths. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the results of five years of research conducted on the propagation of millimeter waves through the atmospheric surface layer. At a site in Flatville, Illinois, radiation in the frequency range from 116 GHz to 230 GHz was propagated along at 1/4 km horizontal path instrumented with multiple meteorological sensors to characterize the state of the atmosphere. The millimeter wave beam propagated at a height of 3.7m to a receiver van that had four receiver antennas spaced in a non-redundant manner to allow measurements of amplitude, phase difference and mutual coherence at spacings from 1.43m to 10m. Comparisons between the clear air propagation data and theory showed close agreement. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible student-oriented approach to radiowave propagation Propagation-the process whereby a signal is conveyed between transmitter and receiver-has a profound influence on communication systems design. Radiowave Propagation provides an overview of the physical mechanisms that govern electromagnetic wave propagation in the Earth's troposphere and ionosphere. Developed in conjunction with a graduate-level wave propagation course at The Ohio State University, this text offers a balance of physical and empirical models to provide basic physical insight as well as practical methods for system design. Beginning with discussions of propagation media properties, plane waves, and antenna and system concepts, successive chapters consider the most important wave propagation mechanisms for frequencies ranging from LF up to the millimeter wave range, including: Direct line-of-sight propagation through the atmosphere Rain attenuation The basic theory of reflection and refraction at material interfaces and in the Earth's atmosphere Reflection, refraction, and diffraction analysis in microwave link design for a specified terrain profile Empirical path loss models for point-to-point ground links Statistical fading models Standard techniques for prediction of ground wave propagation Ionospheric propagation, with emphasis on the skywave mechanism at MF and HF and on ionospheric perturbations for Earth-space links at VHF and higher frequencies A survey of other propagation mechanisms, including tropospheric scatter, meteor scatter, and propagation effects on GPS systems Radiowave Propagation incorporates fundamental materials to help senior undergraduate and graduate engineering students review and strengthen electromagnetic physics skills as well as the most current empirical methods recommended by the International Telecommunication Union. This book can also serve as a valuable teaching and reference text for engineers working with wireless communication, radar, or remote sensing systems.

The basic grounds are presented in close association with the kinds of environmental targets to monitor and with the observing techniques. The book aims at plugging the quite large gap between the thorough and quantitative description of electromagnetic waves interacting with the Earth's environment and the user applications of Earth observation. It is intended for scientifically literate students and professionals who plan to gain a first understanding of remote sensing data and of their information content.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-way, low-altitude radio propagation measurements at 94 GHz and simultaneous surface meteorological measurements were made on a 40.6-km over- the-horizon, over-water path along the southern California coast to assess the effects of the evaporation duct on signal propagation. More than 2000 hours of received signal power were recorded in eight measurement periods from July 1986 through July 1987. The average received power was 63 dB greater than expected for propagation in a nonducting, or standard, atmosphere; 90% of the measurements were at least 55 dB greater than the standard atmosphere. Predictions of transmission loss based on the observed surface meteorology compared favorably to the measured transmission loss; on the average, the predictions underestimated the transmission loss by 10 dB. The reliability and reasonable accuracy of the model provided a strong justification for utilizing the technique to assess millimeter-wave communication and radar systems operating in many, if not all, ocean regions. Keywords: Evaporation duct; Radio propagation; Numerical modeling; Millimeter wave communication; Over-the-horizon signal propagation.
