Molecular absorption by the earth's atmosphere should not present an insurmountable problem for ruby or neodymium laser systems. However, both the water vapor and the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere strongly absorb radiation at carbon dioxide wavelengths; this may present a serious problem to systems employing carbon dioxide lasers. Clean air scattering does not seem to be a serious problem. Aerosol scattering, however, is quite severe and will, except in the clearest weather, strictly limit the operation of ground-based laser communication systems. Atmospheric turbulence also poses a serious limitation on the performance of optical communication systems. However, on the basis of the presently available data it does not seem that atmospheric turbulence will necessarily render laser communication systems unfeasible. (Author).

The influence of particulate matter on gas breakdown and also on thermal blooming was investigated. Typical atmospheric conditions contain approximately 1000 particles/cc. The presence of these particles in the air path of a high power laser beam can dramatically influence the propagation of the beam. This is illustrated by a photograph which shows particles being vaporized and ionized by a high power pulsed CO2 laser beam. The plasma balls generated not only attenuate the laser radiation, but they also act as scattering centers with completely different scattering characteristics than the original particles. The hot vapor can also act as a thermal source which could cause self-induced thermal distortion of subsequent laser pulses.

Book excerpt: Unique properties of laser radiation including its monochromatic properties, polarization, high spectral intensity, coherence, narrow beam divergence, the possibility of controlling the pulse duration and radiation spectrum and, finally, the fact that extremely high power and energy create very favorable conditions for the extensive application of lasers to communi cation systems, systems for the lidar sensing and ultra-high-precision ranging, navigation, remote monitoring of the environment, and many other systems operating in the atmosphere. The operative efficiency of the above systems depends significantly on the state of the atmosphere and the corresponding behavior of laser radia tion propagating through it. This circumstance has stimulated the studies of the above regularities during the passt 10-15 years. For the investiga tions to be carried out the scientists were forced to develop new theories and methods for studying the problem experimentally. Moreover, during such investigations some previously unknown phenomena were observed, among them the nonlinear effects accompanying high-power laser radiation propagating through the atmosphere are of paramount importance. Among the nonlinear effects caused by high-power laser radiation inter action with the atmosphere, the effects accompanying the propagation of high-power radiation through the atmospheric aerosols are of particular interest. Aerosols always occur in the atmosphere. It should be noted that the microphysical and optical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols vary widely, this fact causes a great variety in the features of their inter action with radiation.

Book excerpt: The ambient atmosphere between the laser transmitter and the target can affect CO2 differential absorption lidar (DIAL) measurement sensitivity through a number of different processes. In this work, we will address two of the sources of atmospheric interference with CO2 DIAL measurements: effects due to beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence and extinction due to absorption by atmospheric gases. Measurements of atmospheric extinction under different atmospheric conditions are presented and compared to a standard atmospheric transmission model (FASCODE). We have also investigated the effects of atmospheric turbulence on system performance. Measurements of the effective beam size after propagation are compared to model predictions using simultaneous measurements of atmospheric turbulence as input to the model. These results are also discussed in the context of the overall effect of beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence on the sensitivity of DIAL measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CO2 Lasers: Effects and Applications examines and summarizes the important applications of the device in different areas of study like physics, chemistry, and engineering. In some parts of the book, the reader is assumed to be knowledgeable in university level mathematics or some specialized area in physics or chemistry. The book consists of 10 chapters where the first two establish the general concepts on lasers and CO2 lasers, respectively. Chapter 3 takes the reader further and presents a comprehensive review of optical components for use such as detectors, windows, and mirrors. Because the CO2 laser is mostly used as a heat source, the theory of laser-surface heating is relevant in the discussion. This theory is presented in Chapter 4. Chapters 5 and 6 meanwhile present a summary of observations on cutting, welding, and some related topics. The following chapters discuss the different applications of CO2 lasers in different areas and processes. Some of these applications include in the generation of thermal effect, laser deposition of thin films, spectroscopy, laser photochemistry, and meteorology and communication systems. The text is a good source of reference to both students and scientists in the areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering.

Book excerpt: The report contains a detailed theoretical discussion of the effect of CO2 laser (10.6 micrometer wavelength) energy on fog droplets, and the subsequent effects on the optical propagation path of the laser beam. Changes in refraction index in the beam cross section are considered. Plans for construction of a fog generation chamber for water fogs of controlled characteristics suitable for CO2 laser experimentation are given. Work on the development of CO2 TEA2 laser and triggering systems and progress on a 50 W CW diffusion cooled CO2 laser is discussed. Planned experiments, using the laser under development, for study of the interaction of such beams with laboratory controlled fogs are described. (Author).

Book excerpt: Compact coherent CO2 laser radars have the potential for greatly improved angle, range, and velocity resolution relative to their microwave radar counterparts. This research program was aimed at obtaining quantitative understanding of target reflection and atmospheric propagation effects on such laser radars through a combination of theory and experiments. Toward those ends, improved statistical signal models were developed, and corroborated through measurements, for turbulence and speckle effects in 2-D pulsed imager operation. Speckle and clutter effects in 2-D Doppler imager operation were also studied through analysis and measurements. Possible bad-weather laser radar operation, using scattered light, was considered theoretically, but shown to require use of a different laser wavelength than the 10.6 micron CO2 laser wavelength. A theoretical study of the use of high time-bandwidth (TW) product signal waveforms in 3-D imaging radar was also performed. The experimental portions of the research were carried out under a collaboration arrangement with the Opto-Radar Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory. (Author).
