Book excerpt: This atlas provides a comprehensive, state of the art review of the use of multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) for the imaging of prostate cancer, covering aspects from diagnosis and loco-regional staging through to the role of the technique after treatment and follow-up. The book contains a wealth of high-resolution images, many of them in color, and displays the anatomical-MRI–pathological correlation whenever appropriate. Readers will find a helpful overview on the current standardized method for reading and reporting on mpMRI, the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS), version 2. Dedicated chapters focus on differential diagnosis and imaging pitfalls, and the inclusion of helpful diagrams and algorithms will further assist in image interpretation, enabling readers to ease and improve their use of mpMRI. Edited and written by very experienced radiologists, pathologists, and urologists; the Atlas of Multiparametric Prostate MRI will serve as a unique source of clinically relevant information and an aid to disease management for radiologists, urologists, pathologists, radiotherapists, and oncologists.

Book excerpt: In many centers of excellence in Urology, robotic prostatectomy has become the first choice for the surgical treatment of localized prostate cancer owing to benefits such as reduced pain and minimization of impotence and incontinence. This atlas, specifically designed for use by surgeons, provides a beautifully illustrated, step-by-step guide to all aspects of the procedure. The various techniques that can be employed to achieve excellent oncological and functional results are carefully depicted in appropriate detail; for example, nerve-sparing techniques, bladder neck reconstruction, and approaches aimed at the early restoration of continence are clearly described. Special situations, such as prior prostate surgery, a large prostate, and salvage prostatectomy, are also fully covered. The information contained in this atlas will be of great value in enabling surgeons to improve their results and to take full advantage of the benefits of robotic prostatectomy compared with open prostatectomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prostatic disease consumes a major portion of health-care resources in most countries today. The aging of the population in western countries, coupled with rapid advances in technology, has caused a tremendous increase both in the number of patients seeking therapy as well as in available options for treatment. In addition, the current media focus on the subject has thrust it to the top of the medical and health economics agenda. An Atlas of Prostatic Diseases, Second Edition aims to bring these highly topical issues into somewhat sharper focus, while providing all of this new information in a concise, easily understood format. This is an updated and expanded new edition of Dr. Roger S. Kirby's beautifully illustrated, internationally acclaimed atlas/text on the prostate and prostatic disease, featuring a key section on diagnosis. With new references and more illustrations as well as a comprehensive index, this second edition contains a large number of superb color photographs with accompanying text that explain the anatomy and embryology of the prostate, innervation and ejaculatory function, and the underlying mechanisms and causes of abnormal prostate growth. The atlas also covers prostatic neoplasia and inflammatory processes, pathology of the prostate, bladder outlet obstruction, benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostate cancer and prostatitis, and the diagnosis of prostatic disorders. In keeping with the book's high standing among experts in this field, the foreword to this new edition is by Dr. Perinchery Narayan of the University of Florida, Gainesville.

Book excerpt: MRI Atlas of Prostate Cancer analyses high-resolution MRI scanning and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI. This combination improves the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer and may soon replace PSA testing and digital rectal examination. The first two chapters focus on normal anatomy, anatomic variations, benign disease and intraprostatic tumors. The subsequent chapters on MRI of extracapsular disease create a useful atlas of pathologic anatomy. This is the first text of its kind to show color-coded DCE-MRI scans of prostate cancer and to correlate these imaging findings with tumor grading. The chapters on the post-treatment prostate clearly display the increasing incidence of post-therapy recurrences. This book is intended for internists, radiologists, radiotherapists, oncologists, urologists, family practitioners, and general surgeons. Ultrasound, MRI, and radiotherapy technicians will find it extremely useful as a reference guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnostic and exfoliative cytology has today achieved a status that few could have envisaged 20 years ago. While exfoliative cytology has long been employed in gynecological diagnosis, new and rewarding spheres have now developed in which cytological diagnosis plays an important role. Exfoliative cytology, for example, is widely employed as an aid in the continuous assessment of urinary tract tumors, and aspiration cytology in the diagnosis of thyroid dis eases. This has given rise to a growing demand for pathologists experienced in cytological diagnosis. However, clinicians with an interest in morphology were often the first to adopt these simple and safe methods, being naturally attracted by the chance to avoid conducting biopsy, which, in the last analysis, is nothing less than a surgical operation. In this Atlas of Prostatic Cytology Leistenschneider and Nagel expertly demonstrate what can be achieved when clinicians skilled in morphology take an interest in cytological methods. Not only do they have direct contact with the patient, but they also profit from immediately being in a position to assess the results of their diagnostic procedures by examining the specimen obtained. From the technical point of view aspiration biopsy of the prostate is by no means a simple procedure and the difficulties involved would seem to have been underestimated in the initial phase of enthusiastic acclaim. Consequently it has been not unusual for clinicians and pathologists to be disappointed by the high rate of unsatisfactory samples obtained by this method.

Book excerpt: This book provides the latest recommendations for ultrasound examination of the entire urogenital system, particularly in the male. The coverage encompasses the role of ultrasound in imaging of disorders of the kidneys, urinary tract, prostate, seminal vesicles, bladder, testes, and penis, including male infertility disorders. In addition, detailed consideration is given to intraoperative and interventional ultrasound and recently developed ultrasound techniques. Each chapter defines the purpose of and indications for ultrasound, identifies its benefits and limitations, specifies the technological standards for devices, outlines performance of the investigation, establishes the expected accuracy for differential diagnosis, and indicates the reporting method. Most of the recommendations are based on review of the literature, on previous recommendations, and on the opinions of the experts of the Imaging Working Group of the Italian Society of Urology (SIU) and the Italian Society of Ultrasound in Urology, Andrology, and Nephrology (SIEUN). The book will be of value for all physicians involved in the first-line evaluation of diseases of the renal/urinary system and male genital disorders.
