Download or read book Polar Remote Sensing written by Dan Lubin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 868 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polar regions, perhaps more than any other places on Earth, give the geophysical scientist a sense of exploration. This sensibility is genuine, for not only is high-latitude ?eldwork arduous with many locations seldom or never visited, but there remains much fundamental knowledge yet to be discovered about how the polar regions interact with the global climate system. The range of opportunities for new discovery becomes strikingly clear when we realize that the high latitudes are not one region but are really two vastly di?erent worlds. The high Arctic is a frozen ocean surrounded by land, and is home to fragile ecosystems and unique modes of human habitation. The Antarctic is a frozen continent without regular human habitation, covered by ice sheets taller than many mountain ranges and surrounded by the Earth’s most forbidding ocean. When we consider global change as applied to the Arctic, we discuss impacts to a region whose surface and lower atmospheric temperatures are near the triple point of water throughout much of the year. The most consistent signatures of climate warming have occurred at northern high latitudes (IPCC, 2001), and the potential impacts of a few degrees increase in surface temperature include a reduction in sea ice extent, a positive feedback to climate warming due to lowering of surface albedo, and changes to surface runo? that might a?ect the Arctic Ocean’s salinity and circulation.

Download or read book Sea Ice Climatic Atlas. Volume 1. Antarctic written by NAVAL AIR SYSTEMS COMMAND WASHINGTON DC. and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through 1972, reliable sea ice information in the Antarctic was based on relatively few shore stations and ships reports augmented by limited aerial reconnaissance data. These data were further restricted to relatively small areas observed primarily during the summer resupply season. Since the advent of all weather passive microwave satellite imagery, it has been possible to routinely map the extent of Antartic sea ice on a global scale. Antarctic sea ice analyses have been operationally produced on a weekly basis since 1973. This atlas contains sea ice summaries derived from 521 weekly JIC (Navy/NOAA Joint Ice Center) sea ice analyses produced from 1973 to 1982. Chart and data coverage includes: Maximum/Mean/Minimum Ice Edges; Probability of Occurrence of Any Ice; Mean Ice Concentration; Mean Ice Concentration When Ice is Present; Maximum/Mean/Minimum Extent of 5/10ths or More Ice; Weekly Total Coverage and Extent; Time Series of Weekly Total Coverage and Extent; and Semi-Monthly Coverage and Extent Statistics.

Download or read book National Ice Center Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas 1997 written by Naval ice center washington dc and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Ice Center (NIC), under sponsorship of the United States Navy, the United States Coast Guard, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides sea ice analyses encompassing the "Arctic" and the "Antarctic". These analyses continue the data set established under our previous name, the Joint Ice Center. These atlases continue the near real-time integration of remotely sensed data and point observations and differ only in the Arctic and Antarctic are split into two separate publications per hemisphere per year. This publication is the 12th edition of the annual "Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas" published in hard copy format by NIC. The atlas contains weekly charts depicting the sea ice extent and coverage in the Southern Hemisphere from the first week of January through October 1997. During the last week of October 1997, the Antarctic paper charts were replaced by digital charts in a Graphics Interface Format (GIF). Printouts of the digital GIF charts for all Antarctic regions are contained in Supplement 1 to the "Antarctic Sea Ice Atlas". Future annual atlases will be available in a digital format on CD-ROM though the national Snow and Ice Date Center (http://www-nsidc.colorado.edu). NSIDC is the official archive center for the NIC. The NIC uses a wide variety of data sources in the production of sea ice analyses. The line types used in the analyses provide metadata information with regard to sensor type. Solid lines depict boundaries derived from: point observations, Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Operational Line Scan (DMSP OLS) and NOAA Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data. Dash-dash-dotted line depicts boundaries derived from DMSP Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), and dashed lines depict boundaries derived from forecast models and climatology.

Book Synopsis The Drift of Sea Ice by : Matti Leppäranta
Download or read book The Drift of Sea Ice written by Matti Leppäranta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Edition of The Drift of Sea Ice presents the fundamental laws of sea ice drift which come from the material properties of sea ice and the basic laws of mechanics. The resulting system of equations is analysed for the general properties of sea ice drift, the free drift model and analytical models for ice drift in the presence of internal friction, and the construction of numerical ice drift models is detailed. This second edition of a much lauded work, unique on this topic in the English language, has been revised, updated and expanded with much new information and outlines recent results, in particular in relation to the climate problem, mathematical modelling and ice engineering applications. The current book presents the theory, observations, mathematical modelling techniques, and applications of sea ice drift science. The theory is presented from the beginning on a graduate student level, so that students and researchers coming from other fields such as physical oceanography, meteorology, physics, engineering, environmental sciences or geography can use the book as a source book or self-study material. First the drift ice material is presented ending with the concept of ‘ice state’ – the relevant properties in sea ice dynamics. Ice kinematics observations are widely presented with the mathematical analysis methods, and thereafter come drift ice rheology – to close the triangle material – kinematics – stress. The momentum equation of sea ice is derived in detail and its general properties are carefully analysed. Then follow two chapters on analytical models: free drift and drift in the presence of internal friction: These are very important tools in understanding the dynamical behaviour of sea ice. The last topical chapter is numerical models, which are the modern tool to solve ice dynamics problem in short term and long term problems. The closing chapter summarises sea ice dynamics applications and the need of sea ice dynamic knowledge and gives some final remarks on the future of this branch of science.

Book Synopsis Antarctic Sea Ice Variability in the Southern Ocean-Climate System by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Antarctic Sea Ice Variability in the Southern Ocean-Climate System written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea ice surrounding Antarctica has increased in extent and concentration from the late 1970s, when satellite-based measurements began, until 2015. Although this increasing trend is modest, it is surprising given the overall warming of the global climate and the region. Indeed, climate models, which incorporate our best understanding of the processes affecting the region, generally simulate a decrease in sea ice. Moreover, sea ice in the Arctic has exhibited pronounced declines over the same period, consistent with global climate model simulations. For these reasons, the behavior of Antarctic sea ice has presented a conundrum for global climate change science. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine held a workshop in January 2016, to bring together scientists with different sets of expertise and perspectives to further explore potential mechanisms driving the evolution of recent Antarctic sea ice variability and to discuss ways to advance understanding of Antarctic sea ice and its relationship to the broader ocean-climate system. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.
