Book excerpt: The aims and scope of this atlas include a complete review of the embryology of the normal heart, the normal cardiac anatomy along with a complete discussion of the terms and definitions used to identify and clarify both normal and abnormal anatomy. In addition, techniques of cardiac CT angiography as it pertains to imaging congenital abnormalities are discussed including radiation concepts and radiation saving techniques. The bulk of this book then goes on to completely review the field of adult congenital heart disease using text and more importantly a multitude of pictorial examples (in color and grey scale) to demonstrate the abnormalities. Drawings accompany each picture to better explain the example. Furthermore, difficult and complex anatomical examples are supplemented with digital images and movies to aid in illustrating and understanding the anatomy. Each general set of anomalies as well as each specific abnormality or set of abnormalities includes a concise and simple review of the embryology and epidemiology of the abnormality as well as a concise explanation of the anatomy of the abnormality. In addition, the methods to identify and recognize the abnormality by computed tomography is discussed. Finally, the prognosis and common treatment options for the anomaly are addressed within this comprehensive book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing quite like the pleasure of ”passing on“ the lessons of surgery from one generation to the next. As experienced cardiac surgeons, all of us remember the trainee phase in our specialty when we tried to acquire all of the available Operative Atlases we could find and studying from them to prepare for the next day of teaching in the operating room. However, written chapters and drawings are different as compared to real surgery. To overcome this limitation, we developed together the second edition of this new-concept operative atlas. When our co-editor, the New York Professor of Cardiac Surgery, David H. Adams, first received a copy of the German Cardiac Surgical Operative Atlas edited by Thorsten Wahlers and Thorsten Wittwer, with a request to provide an additional chapter on Tricuspid Valve Repair for this first English edition, he was struck by the simplicity and obvious utility of this book. He considered it not hard to understand why the total first German Edition sold out in a matter of months. In the second International Edition of the Cardiac Surgical Operative Atlas, the beginning surgeon can review very basic techniques and maneuvers such as cannulation strategies and internal mammary harvest. In other chapters, cardiac surgeons of all levels can review complex procedures such as valve sparing or reconstructive operations, captured step by step with high-quality operative photographs. As good as the art work is in a typical Operative Atlas, original pictures from an actual surgical procedure provide the student of surgery with a depth and clarity not possible in a drawn picture. The accompanying concise legends provide the reader with the key points and “take home messages” to learn from each photograph. We have no doubt there is something in this Atlas for every student of cardiac surgery, from the surgical resident at the beginning of his training over the more experienced surgeon “on-call” being confronted with a complex case in the middle of the night to the expert surgeon wanting to learn an advanced technique. Operative Atlases have been an essential part of surgical training since the beginning, and this particular edition is designed to be helpful for young cardiac surgeons and is hopefully a valuable addition to anyone´s collection.

Book excerpt: This atlas depicts and describes catheter-based interventions across the entire pediatric age range, from fetal life through to early adulthood, with the aim of providing an illustrated step-by-step guide that will help the reader to master these techniques and apply them in everyday practice. Clear instruction is offered on a wide range of procedures, including vascular access, fetal interventions, valve dilatation, angioplasty, stent implantation, defect closure, defect creation, valve implantation, hybrid approaches, and other miscellaneous procedures. The atlas complements the previously published handbook, Cardiac Catheterization for Congenital Heart Disease, by presenting a wealth of photographs, images, and drawings selected or designed to facilitate the planning, performance, and evaluation of diagnostic and interventional procedures in the field of congenital heart disease. It will assist in the safe, efficient performance of these procedures, in decision making, and in the recognition and treatment of complications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery(MICS) is an integral component of every future cardiac surgeon’s training. There continues to be a growing global demand towards less invasive surgical techniques. Both cardiologist and cardiac surgeon form "heart teams" to provide patients with novel, minimally invasive procedures, with all their benefits. Less invasive techniques are often complex and require special knowhow and skills. This book offers an innovative approach to learning, utilizing QR code technology, which refers the reader to essential audio-visual material, which, along with the didactic text, focuses on practical aspects of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. In modern Heart Teams, and with the advent of the hybrid era, surgeons will only be able to survive if they have state-of-the-art skills in less invasive technologies, which can be incorporated in the hybrid theatre and/or trans-catheter arena. This text accompanies the surgeon along this path, and provides clinical advice and practical solutions, beyond the necessary basic knowledge. Which courses to visit, which videos to watch, which centres to join for serious training? How best to exploit public and multimedia? How to consent a patient into a MICS procedure? How to set up a MICS program or practice? In the era of value driven outcomes, and a shift towards shorter and better patient journeys, MICS is a skill that no heart surgeon can be without. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery: A Practical Guide is a teaching resource, reference book and manual written by surgeons who both operate and teach the procedures described within. Provides access to online resources via QR codes Includes links to videos and the e-version of the text Acts as a gateway to a huge choice of minimally invasive cardiac surgery materials

The Atlas of Robotic Thoracic Surgery is illustrated with high quality illustrations and color photographs from surgical operations and contains expert analysis from leading surgeons who provide the key visual features of their chosen topics. Anesthetic and cardiopulmonary support preparation for each operation are included and selected references are provided to emphasize evidence-based outcomes. This book has been designed to augment Atlas of Robotic Cardiac Surgery edited by Ranny Chitwood, both being developed from these same concepts of simplicity and practical instruction. Book excerpt: This heart anatomy book describes the cardiac development and cardiac anatomy in the development of the adult heart, and is illustrated by numerous images and examples. It contains 550 images of dissected embryo and adult hearts, obtained through the dissection and photography of 235 hearts. It has been designed to allow the rapid understanding of the key concepts and that everything should be clearly and graphically explained in one book. This is an atlas of cardiac development and anatomy of the human heart which distinguishes itself with the use of 550 images of embryonic, fetal and adult hearts and using text that is logical and concise. All the mentioned anatomical structures are shown with the use of suggestive dissection images to emphasize the details and the overall location. All the images have detailed comments, while clinical implications are suggested. The dissections of different hearts exemplify the variability of the cardiac structures. The electron and optical microscopy images are sharp and provide great fidelity. The arterial molds obtained using methyl methacrylate are illustrative and the pictures use suggestive angles. The dissections were made on human normal and pathological hearts of different ages, increasing the clinical utility of the material contained within.
