Book excerpt: In this 'Subjective Atlas of Luxembourg' more than 100 creative minds with a relationship to Luxembourg map the country according to a subject close to them ? whether through maps, infographics, photo series or other cartographic explorations. Their compiled subjective points of view and dots on the map are a snapshot of people allowing different influences to come together to create a pluralistic identity. That identity resembles a kaleidoscope in which particles of colour and shape are constantly shifting. The complexity of this little nation, which is a unique melting pot of ideas, attitudes and cultural inputs, deserves a detailed, profound, critical and genuine analysis.00This atlas won?t tell you to find your way, but you will encounter views from within, insider perspectives, from which you can draw your own conclusions. The multitude of visual voices in this atlas present other realities that help to make us understand the specificity and sensitivity of Luxembourg society. It challenges to develop new languages to speak about who we are and how we can relate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete descriptive and illustrated catalogue of one of the largest and finest atlases ever assembled. Now housed in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna, the 46-volume atlas is an expanded version of Joan Blaeu's Atlas Maior or 'Great Atlas', published in Amsterdam between 1660 and 1663. Though the core of the atlas consists of the several hundred maps issued by Blaeu, the original owner of the atlas, Laurens van der Hem (1621-1678), added other maps, views, and drawings of his own choice, including four volumes of manuscript maps of Africa and Asia made for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The practice of augmenting atlases was common in the seventeenth century, but few of these personalized atlases have survived the centuries. The catalogue in 7 volumes (plus a volume about the making of the facsimile) will include all the sheets in the atlas reproduced in black-and-white, with cartographical historical and arthistorical descriptions by P. van der Krogt and E. de Groot. Each volume will contain approximately 16 full-colour illustrations. I. Spain, Portugal and France (vols. 1-8). 1996. With about 700 illustrations. 632 pp. ISBN 978 90 6194 278 8 II. Book excerpt: The grand duchy of Luxembourg was created after the Napoleonic Wars, but at the time there was no 'nation' that identified with the emergent state. This book analyses how politicians, scholars and artists have initiated and contributed to nation-building processes in Luxembourg since the nineteenth century, processes that as this book argues are still ongoing. The focus rests on three types of representations of nationhood: a shared past, a common homeland and a national language. History was written so as to justify the country's political independence. Territorial borders shifted meaning, constantly repositioning the national community. The local dialect initially considered German variant was gradually transformed into the 'national language', Luxembourgish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a hundred stereotype maps glazed with exquisite human prejudice, especially collected for you by Yanko Tsvetkov, author of the viral Mapping Stereotypes project. Satire and cartography rarely come in a single package but in the Atlas of Prejudice they successfully blend in a work of art that is both funny and thought-provoking. A reliable weapon against bigots of all kinds, it serves as an inexhaustible source of much needed argumentation and—occasionally—as a nice slab of paper that can be used to smack them across the face whenever reasoning becomes utterly impossible. This second edition packs the most extensive collection of Tsvetkov’s maps to date in a single book suitable for all ages, genders, and races.

Book excerpt: Luxembourg - international financial center, European administrative center, destination country for immigration? This empirical study provides insights about a society that has hitherto largely eluded scientific investigation and observes the processes of identity construction in globalised conditions. The interdisciplinary team of authors exposes the processes of subjective appropriations and institutional attributions at work in the fields of languages, spaces, perceptions of self and others as well as everyday cultures, and identifies for the first time socio-cultural milieus in the Grand Duchy. The findings of the three-year research project uncover the ambivalences and dynamics of a multicultural and multilingual society.

Book excerpt: The Cambridge Illustrated Atlas of Warfare: Renaissance to Revolution provides a thorough introduction to the military and naval history of the years 1492 to 1792, covering the period from the European Renaissance to the revolutionary wars of the late eighteenth century. Detailed colour maps, battle plans, and colour and black-and-white illustrations combine with an authoritative text to illuminate developments in warfare on both land and sea. Particular attention is paid to the effects of European military expansion on the rest of the world including the Americas, Africa, Asia, and the Mediterranean. Special feature panels are devoted to key events, to the more complicated and intriguing military confrontations, to individual tacticians and to the key topics such as weapons, battle strategies, the rise of naval warfare, and the composition of armies. The book is written by a leading historian of the early modern period.
