Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atlas and Epitome of Diseases of the Mouth, Pharynx, and Nose The work of the editor has consisted, first, in a careful comparison of the translation with the original text, and, second, in the addition of such notes as have seemed advisable to represent certain distinctively American views on the several topics discussed. The most extensive of these notes relates to the use of the active principle of the suprarenal bodies, which has won for itself a permanent place in the materia medica of rhinology and laryngology. With the stimulus of a deep appreciation of the valuable services to this special department of medical science of the distinguished German author and clinician, it has been a pleasurable task to assist in bringing them to the knowledge of a wider circle of readers on this side of the Atlantic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Mouth, Throat, and Nose: Including Rhinoscopy and Methods of Local Treatment So rapidly has our knowledge of Oral and Pharyngeal Diseases, and particularly of Diseases of the Nose, - the significance of which, however, has not as yet been sufficiently appreciated, - extended of late, that it is now impossible, either for the practitioner or the student, to avoid bestowing on them a measure of attention. There are certainly many good works and writings on these subjects already, but most of 'them seem to be either too voluminous or too short. I have therefore very gladly complied with the request of the publishers to write a short but exhaustive treatise on the subjects, all the more because, having worked for twelve years at the literature as well as the practice of these diseases, I have now come to know exactly what the practitioner requires. The arrange ment may appear unusual to some, but I think it is as good as any other. Throughout the work great stress has been laid upon the objective condition. This has appeared to me absolutely necessary, on account of the great number of diseases which have similar symptoms; in fact, in diseases of the Mouth, Pharynx, Larynx, and Nose, one is almost compelled to base the diagnosis on the objective symptoms alone. The more detailed discussion in some chapters is explained by the frequency and importance of the affection described. Whoever inclines to think the treatment described in too special a manner, should bear in mind that no simpler, and at the same time efficient, method is possible. The reader will find the services of others suitably acknowledged, but at the same time will not miss the independent experience and criticism of the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of the Nose, Pharynx, and Ear This volume is intended to present disease as the author has seen it during an experience of nearly twenty-five years, while in touch with the work of others. It has been the authors aim to answer in detail those questions regarding the course and outcome of diseases which cause the less experienced observer the most anxiety in an individual case - questions to which an answer is not easily obtained from text-books. In order to carry out this plan, the book could not be written with the brevity and sharp subdivision of topics which have made some of the smaller works popular with students. A textbook should present to the student all the facts bearing on the subject, and present them in their logical development. But, on the other hand, the work is not intended as an encyclopedic treatise, and hence lacks the literary and historical completeness proper to the latter. In the therapeutic part the author has aimed to detail only those procedures which have stood the test of critical experience, and to omit those that have failed under this test, even though sanctioned by the tradition of text-books. As a requisite for all surgical work, topographic anatomy has been given a liberal space. Since anatomic statements are necessarily based upon the labor of professional anatomists, it has seemed proper to the author to draw, as well, upon the superior illustrations in some of the anatomic works less accessible to the English student. It is especially to the works of Zuckerkandl and of Politzer to which he is indebted for anatomic illustrations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Monograph of Diseases of the Nose and Throat It has been the author's aim in the succeeding pages to present in concise form a Monograph on the Diseases of the Nose and Throat especially adapted to the needs of the student and the general practitioner. The book is the outcome of an experience in the general practice of medicine which was not small, supplemented by several years of exclusively nose, throat and ear work. During the last five years I have been in almost daily contact with students, in the capacity of teacher, and have especially felt the need of a condensed work on the subject dealt with. Few general practitioners have either the time or the inclination to wade through a volume on rhinology and laryngology which deals with exhaustive details, though a working knowledge of the diseases of the nose and throat is absolutely essential to the successful physician. I have, therefore, kept constantly in mind these two classes of readers. Only enough anatomy and physiology is given to enable the reader to comprehend the text. Book excerpt: Now on Netflix as a 4-part documentary series! “Pollan keeps you turning the pages . . . cleareyed and assured.” —New York Times A #1 New York Times Bestseller, New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018, and New York Times Notable Book A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research. A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.

Book excerpt: In 1981, Plenum Press published a text entitled The Nature and Treatment of the Stress Response by Robert Rosenfeld, M. D. , and me. That text attempted to do what no other text from a major publisher had previously attempted, that is, to create a clinically practical guide for the treatment of excessive stress and its arousal-related syndromes-this to be captured between the same covers in combination with a detailed, clinically relevant pedagogy on the neurological and endocrinological foundations of the stress re sponse itself. That volume has enjoyed considerable success having found markets among practicing professionals and clinical students as well. The fields of psychosomatic medicine, health psychology, behavioral medicine, and applied stress research have appreciably expanded their boundaries since the publication of the aforementioned volume. Although remarkably little of the clinical utility of that volume has been eroded with time, it was felt that an updated and more integrative clinical textbook needed to be offered to practicing clinicians and students within clinical rather than simply create a second edition of training programs. Therefore, was made to create a significantly revised the original volume, the decision and expanded volume that would cover many of the same topics as the original volume but would provide a primary emphasis on the treatment of excessive stress and that would employ an integrative phenomenological model to facilitate that end. This present volume entitled A Clinical Guide to the Treatment of the Human Stress Response is the result.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive atlas is unique in combining information on the embryological development of the human with detailed presentation of the congenital malformations encountered in clinical practice. As a consequence it will not only assist practitioners and trainees in recognizing and evaluating malformations, but also enable them to understand how a malformation has developed and to explain the mystery of congenital malformations to relatives and patients. The book is organized according to anatomic region, with additional chapters on hernias, tumors, lymphogenesis and lymphatic malformations. According to WHO statistics, each year congenital anomalies result in approximately 3.2 million birth defect-related disabilities worldwide. All too often, however, training in embryology is now a neglected area, and medical graduates frequently lack confidence in their knowledge of the field. Clinical Embryology: An Atlas of Congenital Malformations will help to rectify this deficit and to ensure that malformations are comprehended and managed appropriately. It will be of value for postgraduate trainees in pediatric surgery, pediatrics, and neonatology, undergraduate medical students, and general practitioners/family physicians.
