Book excerpt: Anatomically correct: Bourgery's monumental and unsurpassed treatise We owe a great debt to Jean Baptiste Marc Bourgery (1797-1849) for his Atlas of Anatomy, which was not only a massive event in medical history, but also remains one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated anatomical treatises ever published in any language. In 1830, having received his doctorate in medicine three years prior, Bourgery began work on his magnificent atlas in cooperation with illustrator Nicolas Henri Jacob (1782-1871), a student of the French painter Jacques Louis David. The first volumes were published the following year, but completion of the treatise required nearly two decades of dedication; Bourgery lived just long enough to finish his labor of love, but the last of the treatise's eight volumes was not published in its entirety until five years after his death. The four parts of Bourgery's treatise cover descriptive anatomy, surgical anatomy and techniques (exploring in detail nearly all the major operations that were performed during the first half of the 19th century), general anatomy and embryology, and microscopic anatomy. Jacob's spectacular hand-colored, life-size lithographs are remarkable for their clarity, color, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting a combination of direct laboratory observation and illustrative research; the images are to this day unsurpassed in anatomical illustration. Text in English, French, and German

Organized by anatomical region -- the most common method of studying the body in anatomy and biology courses -- and rigorously indexed, this essential medical reference is the fruit of an intensive collaboration between internationally recognized scientists, dissectors, and graphic artists. It ' s astoundingly rich in information: 650 detailed illustrations, including topographical, schematic, and sectional images, provide a comprehensive map of the human body ' s organ systems in lifelike full color. From systemic anatomy and the body wall to the central nervous system, visual organs, and orbital cavity, it ' s all here. Superbly drawn and meticulously labeled illustrations follow the most current International Anatomical Terminology, adopted by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists in 1998. The Color Atlas of Human Anatomy is the authoritative, practical guide to the body ' s complexities.

The photographs depict anatomic structures more realistically than illustrations in traditional atlases and show students exactly what they will see in the dissection lab. Chapters are organized by region in order of a typical dissection. Each chapter presents structures both in a systemic manner from deep to surface, and in a regional manner. This edition has sixteen additional pages of clinical images—including CT and MRI—that students can compare with cross-sectional anatomic photographs. Many pictures have been electronically enhanced or rescanned for better contrasts.

Book excerpt: The new edition of this well-known text and atlas takes you from knowing human anatomical structures in the abstract to identifying human anatomy in a real body. It is the only text and atlas of gross anatomy that illustrates all structures using high-quality dissection photographs and clearly labeled line drawings for each photo. Plus, concise yet thorough text supports and explains all key human anatomy. High-quality, richly colored dissection photographs showing structures most likely to be seen and tested in the lab improve your ability to recognize and interpret gross specimens accurately. Interpretive line drawings next to every photograph let you test your knowledge by covering the labels. Color-coding on interpretive artwork helps you differentiate among fat, muscle, ligament, etc. Clinical Skills pages help you understand how to apply knowledge of gross anatomy to the clinical setting. More clinical comments throughout the text further clarify anatomical drawings and photographs. Cross sections added to the upper and lower limb sections increase your knowledge base. Up to 50 new color photographs and new CAT scans and MRIs enhance your visual guidance.
