Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walker's Manly Exercises: Containing Rowing, Sailing, Riding, Driving, Racing, Hunting, Shooting, and Other Manly Sports The publishers 'of the present Edition of this popular little volume had a double purpose in entering upon the undertak ing, - namely, to offer a carefully-revised copy of walker's manly exercises, and an outline of rural sports, to which they serve as the best elementary introduction. As the exe cution of that design was committed to me, I can only allude to the nature of the task, and hope that I have not quite failed in the enterprise. This I may be permitted to say, -that if the publishers' desire to make the work a source of instructive and rational amusement be realized, even to the tithe of its extent and earnestness, the labour of his Editor will not have been wholly Without success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of Athletics in College Life: A Plea and a Protest These little papers appeared in the New York Independent for January 25, 1894, and the Forum for January, 1894, and have met with a reception and a demand which seems to justify their publication in pamphlet form. They are, therefore, now sent forth, with the consent of those periodicals in the hope that they may do something at once to justify and safeguard the manly sports of our American colleges. The demand for these papers has been so steady that they are again printed. The original form is retained because it is interesting to observe what reforms have been made and what yet remain to be accomplished. It is especially noteworthy that the taint of professionalism continues to be the greatest evil, and most persistent in connection with baseball. No solution of this difficult question can be reached which does not start from the position that all forms of sport must be the recreation of gentleman in order to be classed as amateur. To play ball for money is not dishonorable, and may be highly laudable. But the man who does it is not an amateur. Nor can it be expected that the boy who seeks recreation in games can compete on equal terms with those who make games a means of livelihood. College games should be limited to those who devote no more time to them than can be spared from the serious pursuit of College studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cassell's Complete Book of Sports and Pastimes: Being a Compendium of Out-Door and in-Door AmusementsThe benefits of athletic and other manly exercises, from an educational as well as a recreative point of View, are now very generally recognised. Ther'e 18 no better means of promoting a healthy action of the body or of bidding defiance to the doctor than a moderate indulgence in sports and pastimes But not only are these exercises of supreme importance in maintaining a vigorous state of health in our boys, they have also a peculiar and decided value in what may be called a moral sense. Listen to the wise words of the Hon. Edward Lyttelton, than whom there is no one more highly qualified by example and precept to offer skilled Opinion on the subject. A boy, says Mr. Lyttelton, is disciplined by athletics in two ways: by being forced to put the welfare of the common cause before selfish interests, to obey implicitly the word of command.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sports and Pastimes of American Boys: A Guide and d104-Book of Games of the Play-Ground, the Parlor, and the Field, Adapted Especially for American Youth OW that the spirit of the age favors the plan of a judicious combination of physical recreation with mental culture, it is timely to prepare a text-book of sports and pastimes for boys, which will best tend to promote this system of paying due attention to physical as well as mental education. An old writer says, Let me make the songs of a people, and I care not who makes their laws. This rule is as applicable to the structure of the sports of a people as it is to the com position of their songs. The pastimes of boys of all nations partake largely of the peculiar character of the people whose youth engage in them. The boys of a war like nation find their chief recreation in sports in which feats of brutal courage, and of endurance of fatigue and pain, are marked characteristics. On the other hand, the youths of a peaceful people enjoy those pastimes best which most com pare in their character with the national life of their progenitors. Differences in climate necessarily have their relation to the character of national sports but it is more in the essential character of the people themselves that their national pastimes differ, and this is especially noticeable in the receative sports of boys. It is in this respect that the games of American boyhood are different, as a rule, from those of English youths. Of course, there is a certain degree of similarity in most of them, arising from their English origin but there is scarcely an imported game that is at all open to improvement, which has not of late years been essentially Americanized witness the evolution of our manly national game of base-ball from the old English schoolboy game of Rounders. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sport With Gun and Rod in American Woods and Waters We shall have attained our object in this book, if the Sportsman, as he reads it, feels his lungs expand with the cool, balsam-laden air of the woods; hears the sudden whir-r-r of the rufl'ed grouse on the mountain-side, and feels his nerves grow tense as he again stands over his dog and is about to flush the woodcock or snipe; hears the breakers on the rocky coast, as in imagina tion he makes a long cast into the surf; smells the salt marshes, while he hears the cries of the wild fowl and the whistle of the ducks' wings. By its perusal, also, the younger reader may be led to spend his vacations in the enjoyment of sports which are manly and health-giving, which engender self reliance and good-fellowship, and develop a love for Nature. My connection with this volume was unexpected. Some time ago I sug gested to the editor of the century magazine that the various articles on hunting and angling which had appeared in that periodical should be col lected into a book. At the time I made this suggestion, I had no inten tion or desire to undertake the editing of writings describing the pursuit of game, so varied in habits and haunts that no one person could be expected to have had the requisite experience, and it was only at the solicitation of the publishers that I undertook the task. To make the work complete, several papers have been added, some of which are here printed for the first time. When first published in 1986, the book helped shape the ways historians write about American sport and culture, expanding scholarly boundaries by exploring masculinity as an historical subject and by suggesting that social categories like gender, class, and ethnicity can be understood only in relation to each other. This updated edition of Gorn's highly influential history of the early prize rings features a new afterword, the author's meditation on the ways in which studies of sport, gender, and popular culture have changed in the quarter century since the book was first published. An up-to-date bibliography ensures that The Manly Art will remain a vital resource for a new generation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping and inspiring book, Civic Passions examines innovative leadership in periods of crisis in American history. Starting from the late nineteenth century, when respected voices warned that America was on the brink of collapse, Cecelia Tichi explores the wisdom of practical visionaries who were confronted with a series of social, political, and financial upheavals that, in certain respects, seem eerily similar to modern times. The United States--then, as now--was riddled with political corruption, financial panics, social disruption, labor strife, and bourgeois inertia. Drawing on a wealth of evocative personal accounts, biographies, and archival material, Tichi brings seven iconoclastic--and often overlooked--individuals from the Gilded Age back to life. We meet physician Alice Hamilton, theologian Walter Rauschenbusch, jurist Louis D. Brandeis, consumer advocate Florence Kelley, antilynching activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett, economist John R. Commons, and child-welfare advocate Julia Lathrop. Bucking the status quo of the Gilded Age as well as middle-class complacency, these reformers tirelessly garnered popular support as they championed progressive solutions to seemingly intractable social problems. Civic Passions is a provocative and powerfully written social history, a collection of minibiographies, and a user's manual on how a generation of social reformers can turn peril into progress with fresh, workable ideas. Together, these narratives of advocacy provide a stunning precedent of progressive action and show how citizen-activists can engage the problems of the age in imaginative ways. While offering useful models to encourage the nation in a newly progressive direction, Civic Passions reminds us that one determined individual can make a difference.
