Excerpt: ...a fiery gleam Shot from his eyelids; with a stifled scream He clutch'd his sword hilt, and his ample breast Heav'd as he rose, and as through fiery steam He saw all faces, madd'ning at the jest Of that first speech, the last but in suspicion guess'd. XXVII. To Bohemond he strode, but all around The princes rose to stay him, and the first Was Bertrand d'Aureval, who quickly wound The wild Duke in his arms. But Robert burst With a half-blow away, and madly curst, With words of insult at the Count, who went Aside much hurt in soul, and none had durst Approach the Duke, had not the Legate lent His aid to draw him off in wrathful discontent. XXVIII. Glaring around, he shook the priest's hand off; Then burst off from him, striding to the street. As in his brain the words of that rude scoff Bum'd fresh, from time to time with speed more fleet, His strides redouble to the far retreat Where he and all his train found hostel-room; An edifice for noblest uses meet. He burst into the hall, where through the gloom Of dusky eve some lamps the marble walls illume. XXIX. And there were sitting at their sorry meal, His knights and barons. To his seat he went And flung him down--his mail and blade of steel Clang'd as he sat--in deepest converse blent His liegemen's talk swept o'er each strange event Of these late days and of high hopes renew'd; They minded not their lord, nor knew what meant His sullen silence, till his angry mood Burst into speech, and all his fiery anguish show'd. XXX. " Barons and chevaliers," he ending cried, " I will have vengeance, ere I homeward fare: For O be sure, no longer will I bide The scoff and scorn of men, while others wear The crown of valour, and we vainly bear The brunt of battle, that each grasping knave...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Crusade: The Accounts of Eyewitnesses and Participants When Henry Adams sought to triangulate the progress of modern civilization he fixed his historical transit at Mont St. Michel and Chartres in the days of the First Crusade and sighted from them across the centuries. No earlier place in the Middle Ages would have afforded a foundation of equal breadth in its description of society. The spiritual character of the Crusade lent a halo to even the most commonplace details connected with it and thus gave to them a literary immortality hitherto confined rather narrowly to matters of ecclesiastical interest. The widespread enthusiasm for the movement and participation in it assured its commemoration not only in monuments of stone but in a variety of writings as well. The authors of these accounts were neither sophisticated nor highly trained in their art. The picture of society which they drew, though relatively complete, has stood forth with all the simple and stark realism of a charcoal sketch, full of feeling, action, and scenery, but lacking in finish. The polish and finish have come with the later centuries. For those, however, who would understand that society even in its more finished form, a knowledge of the preliminary sketch is still essential. In these lack-o-Latin days students seeking to accomplish this find their path too much beset with linguistic obstacles. It is to ameliorate these difficulties that the present volume has been compiled. The plan of this work will be found reminiscent of Archers Crusade of Richard I and the Parallel Source Problems of Mediaeval History, The author gratefully acknowledges indebtedness to both. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Literature of the Crusades The first part of the work now submitted to the public, is a translation of the lectures delivered at Munich; the second part is taken from the preface to his History of the First Crusade, published in 1841 and consists of an elaborate criticism on the various original authorities in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and on the later historians of the Crusades, down to the present time. There exists, we believe, no such critical examination of the ori ginal authorities in any other language. The refer ences to them in Mills's History of the Crusades are somewhat meagre; while\ Michaud, although in his Bibliotheque des Croisades he has given ample extracts, has nowhere subjected the originals to the rigorous and minute analysis they undergo at the hands of the German Professor. The first impulse to a critical examination of the original authorities of the First Crusade was given by Professor Ranke in his Historical Exercises He began with the first books of William of Tyre, which he proved to be merely a repetition of earlier accounts by Albert of Aix, Ray mond of Agiles, and from the 'gesta Francorum.' He then examined Albert of Aix, whose work he considered to be derived chiefly from oral tradition. Professor Ranke's other avocations prevented his pursuing this subject any further; but sufficient was done to clear the way for other historical stu dents; and v. Sybel has carried out the method of his eminent teacher. The narrative of the First Crusade, as given by Mills and other modern historians, v. Sybel re gards as a mingled mass of truth and falsehood, of history and legend, founded chiefly on the account of William of Tyre. William of Tyre wrote in 1170, and with much that was valuable, he mixed tales borrowed from Albert of Aix The general character of the work is thought by the German Professor to be poetical and legendary.
