Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.

Book excerpt: What methodologies within the behavioral sciences have clinical application for the diagnosis and management of high risk and handicapped infants? Originally published in 1979, this volume not only deals with this issue, but illustrates the contributions that behavioral science may have offered those called upon to evaluate the cognitive consequences of perinatal high risk factors at the time. The inadequacies of some measures used to assess intellectual competence in retardates are juxtaposed with the sophisticated methodologies that may be employed to document early mental abilities. Also included are assessment procedures that bypass reliance on neuromotor performance, imitation, or language production. The authors draw attention to the discontinuous nature of cognitive development, to the possibility that mental and motor development may proceed independently, and to the plasticity of the developing CNS, which may overcome early deficits if underlying competences are recognized and exposed to appropriate stimulation. Here is a volume that does not simply catalog the nature of the child’s accomplishments and deficits, but emphasizes the need to examine his potential for learning, and offers various methodologies that may be of value in documenting the child’s continuing cognitive development. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1979. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Book excerpt: Professors who seek a comprehensive, quality introduction to working with infants at risk for developmental delays need look no further. Interdisciplinary and accessible, this stimulating textbook imparts the knowledge that is essential for accurate identification and appropriate early intervention. Designed as an introductory text, this book provides a comprehensive overview of typical and atypical development while it explains key assessment issues and intervention programs. Real-life case studies demonstrate state-of-the-art intervention techniques and offer a first-hand perspective on identifying babies who have or are at risk for disabilities. Students in the fields of child development, human services, psychology, and nursing will find definitions, descriptions, and helpful advice on risk factors, screening and assessment, early intervention programs and techniques, collaborating with team members, legal mandates, IEPs and IFSPs, and working with families. Dealing head-on with complex and sensitive subjects like eligibility criteria and ethics in the NICU, this text explores some of the most vital issues in the field of early intervention. A revised and updated edition, it is a most valuable addition to every instructor's and students's shelf.

Book excerpt: This text builds a comprehensive base from which students can approach challenges that lie outside their own settings and learn how to promote optimal development in infants who are at risk and disabled as early as possible. The second edition has been greatly expanded to reflect current issues and trends in family-centered care and interventions, cultural diversity, and health and medical risks. The focus of the text is on the transactional nature of the infant's development within the contexts of the family and community. The book's scope includes educational, psychological, and medical information relevant to infant development, making it ideal for university courses in special education, health service professions, and social services. With chapters by experts in various fields, the interdisciplinary text presents an overview of research and literature on both normal and atypical infant development and suggests models and practices for application to early interventions with infants who are at risk and disabled.
