Book Synopsis A Practical Introduction to Homeland Security by : Bruce Oliver Newsome
Download or read book A Practical Introduction to Homeland Security written by Bruce Oliver Newsome and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides students with a practical introduction to the concepts, structure, politics, law, hazards, threats, and practices of homeland security everywhere, focusing on US “homeland security,” Canadian “public safety,” and European “domestic security.” It is a conceptual and practical textbook, not a theoretical work. It is focused on the knowledge and skills that will allow the reader to understand how homeland security is and should be practiced. Globalization, population growth, migration, technology, aging infrastructure, and the simple trend to higher expectations are making homeland security more challenging. Yes, homeland security really is a global problem. The hyperconnectivity of today’s world has reduced the capacity of the United States to act unilaterally or to solve homeland risks from within the borders alone. Newsome and Jarmon explain the relevant concepts, the structural authorities and responsibilities that policymakers struggle with and within which practitioners must work, the processes that practitioners and professionals choose between or are obliged to use, the actual activities, and the end-states and outputs of these activities. Moreover, this book presents the concept of homeland security as an evolving experience rather than an artifact of life since 2001. It is a profession that requires some forming from the ground up as well as the top down.
Book Synopsis Church State Corporation by : Winnifred Fallers Sullivan
Download or read book Church State Corporation written by Winnifred Fallers Sullivan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Church and state: a simple phrase that reflects one of the most famous and fraught relationships in the history of the United States. But what exactly is “the church,” and how is it understood in US law today? In Church State Corporation, religion and law scholar Winnifred Fallers Sullivan uncovers the deeply ambiguous and often unacknowledged ways in which Christian theology remains alive and at work in the American legal imagination. Through readings of the opinions of the US Supreme Court and other legal texts, Sullivan shows how “the church” as a religious collective is granted special privilege in US law. In-depth analyses of Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC and Burwell v. Hobby Lobby reveal that the law tends to honor the religious rights of the group—whether in the form of a church, as in Hosanna-Tabor, or in corporate form, as in Hobby Lobby—over the rights of the individual, offering corporate religious entities an autonomy denied to their respective members. In discussing the various communities that construct the “church-shaped space” in American law, Sullivan also delves into disputes over church property, the legal exploitation of the black church in the criminal justice system, and the recent case of Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Brimming with insight, Church State Corporation provocatively challenges our most basic beliefs about the ties between religion and law in ostensibly secular democracies.
Download or read book Home and Abroad written by Martin Parr and published by Trafalgar Square Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British photographer Parr uses his camera to skewer the affluent consumer culture now pervasive in his home country and throughout Europe. He is critical and pessimistic: in some of his ironically colorful pictures, fast-food consumers are literally ankle-deep in trash, and a kind of consumerist stupor seems to overtake most of the faces. Yet at the same time Parr is humorous, poking fun at a bare-breasted sunbather bottle-feeding her baby, at frenzied supermarket shoppers with crazily overloaded carts. The spirit of the late Tony Ray-Jones, Parr's compatriot whose delightful A Day Off (1974) showed the English at play, hovers over Home and Abroad. Sadly, Parr's English have gotten duller, gained weight, and lost touch with their delightful traditional eccentricities since Ray-Jones' day. Perhaps even Ray-Jones might today see the English as Parr has--homogenized and zombified by material goods. Or perhaps Parr simply has a darker vision. Gretchen Garner

Book excerpt: Two years of living abroad, two years of stories, encounters, and self-discovery. These are tales from everywhere but home. After graduating college, Phil Rosen dropped everything, packed up, and moved to Hong Kong. He launched a travel blog and ventured all over Southeast Asia, meeting people, seeing places, and writing about it all the while. Travelogues of different countries alternate with chapters that raise questions of self-discovery, purpose and finding meaning as a recent college graduate. There are stories from Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, Bali, and more. With each chapter, Phil seems to get closer and closer to answering the question "What are college graduates really supposed to do in life?"

Download or read book At Home Abroad written by John Bresnan and published by Equinox Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1953, as part of the Eisenhower/Dulles response to Senator Joseph McCarthy's charges of security risks in its staff, John Bresnan was fired from the U.S. foreign service. This turned out to be a blessing is disguise as he was quickly hired by the Ford Foundation in its New York headquarters, and in 1961 was appointed Assistant Representative to Indonesia. Four years later, Bresnan was given another assignment: close the office. What follows is a personal recollection of the philanthropic work by the Ford Foundation during a critical period of development for the country. It details the Ford Foundation's successes and failures as well as his relationships with a wide array of characters: from John D. Rockefeller III to Soedjatmoko, from McGeorge Bundy to the Sultan of Yogyakarta. Based on extensive research in the archives of the Ford Foundation as well as personal files, At Home Abroad is an engaging insight into the inner workings of one of the largest philanthropic organizations and their mission in the developing world. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in the role of American philanthropy overseas. JOHN BRESNAN was Assistant Representative of the Ford Foundation in Indonesia from 1961 to 1965, Representative there from 1969 to 1973, and Head of the Office for Asia and the Pacific at Ford's headquarters in New York from 1973 to 1982. Since then, he has been a Senior Research Scholar at the Weatherhead East Asian Institute at Columbia University, where he has written and edited books on Indonesia, the Philippines, and Southeast Asia that were published by Columbia University Press, Princeton University Press, and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Download or read book At Home Abroad written by Henry R. Nau and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has never felt at home abroad. The reason for this unease, even after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, is not frequent threats to American security. It is America's identity. The United States, its citizens believe, is a different country, a New World of divided institutions and individualistic markets surviving in an Old World of nationalistic governments and statist economies. In this Old World, the United States finds no comfort and alternately tries to withdraw from it and reform it. America cycles between ambitious internationalist efforts to impose democracy and world order, and more nationalist appeals to trim multilateral commitments and demand that the European and Japanese allies do more. In At Home Abroad, Henry R. Nau explains that America is still unique but no longer so very different. All the industrial great powers in western Europe (and, arguably, also Japan) are now strong liberal democracies. A powerful and peaceful new world exists beyond America's borders and anchors America's identity, easing its discomfort and ending the cycle of withdrawal and reform. Nau draws on constructivist and realist perspectives to show how relative national identities interact with relative national power to define U.S. national interests. He provides fresh insights for U.S. grand strategy toward various countries. In Europe, the identity and power perspective advocates U.S. support for both NATO expansion to consolidate democratic identities in eastern Europe and concurrent, but separate, great-power cooperation with Russia in the United Nations. In Asia, this perspective recommends a shift of U.S. strategy from bilateralism to concentric multilateralism, starting with an emerging democratic security community among the United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, India, and Taiwan, and progressively widening this community to include reforming ASEAN states and, if it democratizes, China. In the developing world, Nau's approach calls for balancing U.S. moral (identity) and material (power) commitments, avoiding military intervention for purely moral reasons, as in Somalia, but undertaking such intervention when material threats are immediate, as in Afghanistan, or material and moral stakes coincide, as in Kosovo.
