Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to present some means for the comparison of the quality of estimators constructed from samples with random sizes with that of estimators constructed from samples with non-random sizes. As this means it is proposed to use the deficiency. We also demonstrate that all those statistics that are regarded as asymptotically normal in the classical sense, become asymptotically Laplace or Student if the sample size is random. We especially separate the case where the Student distribution parameter ("the number degrees of freedom") is small. Thus, the Laplace and Student distributions may be used as an asymptotic approximation in descriptive statistics being a convenient heavy-tailed alternative to stable laws.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents selections of Peter J. Bickel’s major papers, along with comments on their novelty and impact on the subsequent development of statistics as a discipline. Each of the eight parts concerns a particular area of research and provides new commentary by experts in the area. The parts range from Rank-Based Nonparametrics to Function Estimation and Bootstrap Resampling. Peter’s amazing career encompasses the majority of statistical developments in the last half-century or about about half of the entire history of the systematic development of statistics. This volume shares insights on these exciting statistical developments with future generations of statisticians. The compilation of supporting material about Peter’s life and work help readers understand the environment under which his research was conducted. The material will also inspire readers in their own research-based pursuits. This volume includes new photos of Peter Bickel, his biography, publication list, and a list of his students. These give the reader a more complete picture of Peter Bickel as a teacher, a friend, a colleague, and a family man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With this collections volume, some of the important works of Willem van Zwet are moved to the front layers of modern statistics. The selection was based on discussions with Willem, and aims at a representative sample. The result is a collection of papers that the new generations of statisticians should not be denied. They are here to stay, to enjoy and to form the basis for further research. The papers are grouped into six themes: fundamental statistics, asymptotic theory, second-order approximations, resampling, applications, and probability. This volume serves as basic reference for fundamental statistical theory, and at the same time reveals some of its history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of these lecture notes is to develop a theory of asymptotic expansions for functions involving two variables, while at the same time using functions involving one variable and functions of the quotient of these two variables. Such composite asymptotic expansions (CAsEs) are particularly well-suited to describing solutions of singularly perturbed ordinary differential equations near turning points. CAsEs imply inner and outer expansions near turning points. Thus our approach is closely related to the method of matched asymptotic expansions. CAsEs offer two unique advantages, however. First, they provide uniform expansions near a turning point and away from it. Second, a Gevrey version of CAsEs is available and detailed in the lecture notes. Three problems are presented in which CAsEs are useful. The first application concerns canard solutions near a multiple turning point. The second application concerns so-called non-smooth or angular canard solutions. Finally an Ackerberg-O’Malley resonance problem is solved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asymptotic methods are frequently used in many branches of both pure and applied mathematics, and this classic text remains the most up-to-date book dealing with one important aspect of this area, namely, asymptotic approximations of integrals. In Asymptotic Approximations of Integrals, all results are proved rigorously, and many of the approximation formulas are accompanied by error bounds. A thorough discussion on multidimensional integrals is given, and references are provided. The book contains the "distributional method," which is not available elsewhere. Most of the examples in this text come from concrete applications. Since its publication twelve years ago, significant developments have occurred in the general theory of asymptotic expansions, including smoothing of the Stokes phenomenon, uniform exponentially improved asymptotic expansions, and hyperasymptotics. These new concepts belong to the area now known as "exponential asymptotics." Expositions of these new theories are available in papers published in various journals, but not yet in book form. Audience: this book can be used either as a text for graduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering or as a reference for research workers in these fields.
