Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph reports the advances that have been made in the area by the author and many other mathematicians; it is an important source of ideas for the researchers interested in the subject. --Zentralblatt MATH Although advanced, this book is a very good introduction to the subject, and the reading of the abstract part, which is elegant, is pleasant. ... this monograph will be of valuable interest for those who aim to learn in the very rapidly growing subject of infinite-dimensional dissipative dynamical systems. --Mathematical Reviews This book is directed at researchers in nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations and at those who apply these topics to other fields of science. About one third of the book focuses on the existence and properties of the flow on the global attractor for a discrete or continuous dynamical system. The author presents a detailed discussion of abstract properties and examples of asymptotically smooth maps and semigroups. He also covers some of the continuity properties of the global attractor under perturbation, its capacity and Hausdorff dimension, and the stability of the flow on the global attractor under perturbation. The remainder of the book deals with particular equations occurring in applications and especially emphasizes delay equations, reaction-diffusion equations, and the damped wave equations. In each of the examples presented, the author shows how to verify the existence of a global attractor, and, for several examples, he discusses some properties of the flow on the global attractor.

Book excerpt: Many of problems of the natural sciences lead to nonlinear partial differential equations. However, only a few of them have succeeded in being solved explicitly. Therefore different methods of qualitative analysis such as the asymptotic methods play a very important role. This is the first book in the world literature giving a systematic development of a general asymptotic theory for nonlinear partial differential equations with dissipation. Many typical well-known equations are considered as examples, such as: nonlinear heat equation, KdVB equation, nonlinear damped wave equation, Landau-Ginzburg equation, Sobolev type equations, systems of equations of Boussinesq, Navier-Stokes and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive textbook provides the fundamental concepts and methods of dissipative quantum mechanics and related issues in condensed matter physics starting from first principles. It deals with the phenomena and theory of decoherence, relaxation and dissipation in quantum mechanics that arise from the random exchange of energy with the environment. Major theoretical advances in combination with stunning experimental achievements and the arising perspective for quantum computing have brightened the field and brought it to the attention of the general community in natural sciences. Expertise in dissipative quantum mechanics is by now beneficial in a broad sphere. This book — originally published in 1992 and republished as enlarged and updated second, third and fourth edition in 1999, 2008, and 2012 — dives even deeper into the fundamental concepts, methods and applications of quantum dissipation. The fifth edition provides a self-contained and updated account of the quantum mechanics and quantum statistics of open systems. The subject matter of the book has been thoroughly revised to better comply with the needs of newcomers and the demands of the advanced readership. Most of the chapters are rewritten to enhance clarity and topicality. Four new chapters covering recent developments in the field have been added. There are about 600 references. This book is intended for use by advanced undergraduate and graduate students in physics, and for researchers active in the field. They will find the monograph as a rich and stimulating source.

Book excerpt: This book provides an approach to the study of perturbation and discretization effects on the long-time behavior of dynamical and control systems. It analyzes the impact of time and space discretizations on asymptotically stable attracting sets, attractors, asumptotically controllable sets and their respective domains of attractions and reachable sets. Combining robust stability concepts from nonlinear control theory, techniques from optimal control and differential games and methods from nonsmooth analysis, both qualitative and quantitative results are obtained and new algorithms are developed, analyzed and illustrated by examples.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the dynamic complexity of neural, genetic networks, and reaction diffusion systems. The author shows that all robust attractors can be realized in dynamics of such systems. In particular, a positive solution of the Ruelle-Takens hypothesis for on chaos existence for large class of reaction-diffusion systems is given. The book considers viability problems for such systems - viability under extreme random perturbations - and discusses an interesting hypothesis of M. Gromov and A. Carbone on biological evolution. There appears a connection with the Kolmogorov complexity theory. As applications, transcription-factors-microRNA networks are considered, patterning in biology, a new approach to estimate the computational power of neural and genetic networks, social and economical networks, and a connection with the hard combinatorial problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book investigates classical and more recent methods of study for the asymptotic behavior of dissipative continuous dynamical systems with applications to ordinary and partial differential equations, the main question being convergence (or not) of the solutions to an equilibrium. After reviewing the basic concepts of topological dynamics and the definition of gradient-like systems on a metric space, the authors present a comprehensive exposition of stability theory relying on the so-called linearization method. For the convergence problem itself, when the set of equilibria is infinite, the only general results that do not require very special features of the non-linearities are presently consequences of a gradient inequality discovered by S. Lojasiewicz. The application of this inequality jointly with the so-called Liapunov-Schmidt reduction requires a rigorous exposition of Semi-Fredholm operator theory and the theory of real analytic maps on infinite dimensional Banach spaces, which cannot be found anywhere in a readily applicable form. The applications covered in this short text are the simplest, but more complicated cases are mentioned in the final chapter, together with references to the corresponding specialized papers.

This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various problems involving the interplay of asymptotics and numerics in the analysis of wave propagation in dissipative systems are studied. A general approach to the asymptotic analysis of linear, dissipative waves is developed. It was applied to the derivation of asymptotic boundary conditions for numerical solutions on unbounded domains. Applications include the Navier-Stokes equations. Multidimensional traveling wave solutions to reaction-diffusion equations are also considered. A preliminary numerical investigation of a thermo-diffusive model of flame propagation in a channel with heat loss at the walls is presented.
